Congresswoman Virginia Foxx

I had the opportunity to spend some time on Saturday afternoon with Congresswoman Virginia Foxx in the town of Mayodan, NC.  Rep. Foxx represents part of western Rockingham County, most of the western Piedmont Triad and into northwestern North Carolina.

Virginia Foxx has a compelling life story.  When citizens read the caricatures of political figures that are related by the media, they oft can have little idea of the path they might have traveled.

In the case of Rep. Foxx, she was born in Harlem, and spent her early childhood years living with her family in a "Little Italy" section nearby.  Her family moved to western North Carolina when she was six years old, where she was raised in abject poverty, with no electricity or indoor plumbing.

At one point, she lost the sight in one of her eyes because of retinal disease.

In spite of the various obstacles she has faced, she earned a couple of advanced degrees and became a college professor.  She later became president of a community college in western North Carolina.  Finally, after her 7-year stint as community college president, she became a state senator and later a member of Congress.

When I met her, it became immediately obvious to me that Virginia Foxx is a very active, energetic woman with an engaging mind and personality.

I talked with her about the Tea Party phenomenon, and asked whether she seeks to identify with that movement.  She was very careful with her response.  She emphasized that she was an admirer of the Tea Party groups; and her attitude toward them is one of encouragement and respect.  But she also wants to avoid trying to influence them because she knows they value their independence.

It should be noted, however, that Virginia Foxx was a solid "constitutional conservative" long before the Tea Party movement arose last year.  I investigated her voting record with the American Conservative Union (ACU) and the liberal Americans for Democratic Action (ADA).  Both rate members of Congress on a scale from 0 - 100.

Her 2009 ADA rating was 0%.  Her lifetime ACU rating is 99.2%.  She was named a "taxpayer hero" by Citizens Against Government Waste, which gave her a rating of 99%.  In addition, she earned a perfect rating from the Club for Growth on its pro-growth scorecard.  She told me she belongs to a Tenth Amendment group in the House, as well as a Constitution caucus.

I asked her what was her most proud legislative achievement.  She indicated that, during 2006, she was able to cut permanently $39 billion from an appropriations bill that was being misspent in response to Hurricane Katrina.  She was concerned about the fact that there had been no plan or accountability built into the spending package.  She has passed at least several other bills and amendments.  This is somewhat of an achievement for a relatively new member of Congress, particularly considering the fact that the House has so many members.

Congresswoman Foxx is very pro-life.  I discussed with her the tension between wanting to pass pro-life legislation at the federal level versus the goal of remaining true to constitutional conservatism.  She said she resolves this issue by taking the position that abortion law should be settled at the state level.  She, of course, opposes Roe vs. Wade.  She shared with me that some preliminary discussions have taken place with respect to Congress using its power of the purse to express its displeasure with the judiciary.  There has even been some talk of de-funding judgeships or circuits.

She emphasized, however, that Congress will have its hands full with the current economic situation for quite some time.

We discussed the possibility of a Republican takeover of the House in November.  I asked her, if that occurred, what would be the most achievable step the House could take to remove the teeth from Obamacare.  She stated with certainty that the new Republican majority would simply refrain from funding its activities and programs.

She also felt the House would vote to repeal Obamacare.  But of course, the President would veto any repeal of Obamacare if it passes the Senate.

I asked her how she became a community college president-- which is quite an achievement.  She indicated she was working in the administration of Governor Jim Martin, and came to know the head of the state community college system at that time, Bob Scott.  He made her aware of an opening for the presidency of Mayland Community College.  She applied and was selected over 107 other applicants.  She was only the third woman in the history of the state of North Carolina at that time to rise to the presidency of a community college.

When she arrived, she found she had inherited some fiscal mismanagement; and had to begin cutting positions.  Because of this, she made some enemies; and a changing of the guard at the college's board of trustees ultimately worked against her.  She resigned her position, and subsequently ran for state senate.  She now views this period of tribulation as part of God's work in her life, paving the way for her career as an elected official.  She states that during her tenure at Mayland Community College, she was able to increase significantly the quality of the educational offerings available to students there.

We spoke about her Italian roots, which are a bit unexpected for a member of Congress representing North Carolina.  Her maiden name is Palmieri; and she is 50% Italian.

She recalls making frequent visits to New York  City to visit extended family when she was young, and spending prolonged periods with them there.  As I observed her speaking with me, it was clear that she was demonstrative in her manner of speech, with use of her hands as she spoke, and a certain degree of vehemence in her voice.  One could easily detect the Italian part of her background as she verbalized and interacted.  And yet, there was a faint, discernible North Carolina accent in her voice.

I asked her what aspect of her Italian background inculcated into her when she was young most affected her attaining the role of an elected official.  She thought back on her Italian family, and recalled, in all frankness, that they were "opinionated".  She is a principled politician; and it was clear that she felt she had gotten that attribute from them.

She told me that her ancestors came from Naples, Italy.  She has had some involvement with the National Italian American Foundation in Washington.

We spoke about another American of Italian descent who is vying for a North Carolina congressional seat-- Ilario Pantano, who is running against Mike McIntyre in the eastern part of the state.   Foxx felt that Pantano-- a former Iraqi war veteran with a compelling life story-- has an excellent chance to win that race.  The incumbent McIntyre apparently has not accomplished much during his period of service in Washington.

As I spoke with Virginia Foxx, I was struck by how the humanity of this impressive woman, and the remarkable nature of her life story, contrasts with the mistaken caricature of her that has been presented in the regional media.  Yes, she is a conservative with a strong voice who does not hesitate to speak on the floor of the House advocating certain approaches to policy.  She has become somewhat of a C-Span celebrity.  And yes, she can be a bit feisty.

But I walked away from my interview with her feeling that I could not help but like her immensely; and admire and appreciate what she is doing.

She is a solid constitutional conservative; and adopted that perspective long before it became fashionable over the last eighteen months.

VMAS 2010: A Night of Yay, Nay and A Case of Blue Ovaries

Kanye West MTV VMAS 2010 Taylor SwiftI, like millions of others, watched the televised calamity that took place last night better known as the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs).

It was an event that I bet my pretty ponytail on to be a “now this is a music awards show” compared to the declining appeal of cable award shows but regrettably, it was what young social media addicts would refer to as being the ultimate “fail.”

The 2010 VMAs welcomed with open arms an highly anticipated ratings increase with the return of the always unpredictable and creative dexterity of Kanye West.

Because of his interruption during the 2009 VMAs which was so…Kanye-esque, country starlet, Taylor Swift felt compelled and entitled to dive back into the past and show a MTV-approved clip of the night that made her a neighbor-hood known name before performing her obvious dedication to the Chicago rapper.

As the long-waited finale of the night, Kanye dressed to the Don Juan in what many have referred to as his Eddie Murphy Delirious-inspired look.

He engaged the crowd in a skin-tight, balls-hugging red suit by supplying his diehard fans with a new track and potential ringtone potential. Kanye, the gifted lyricist that he is, could have easily let his pride take over and fired back, but instead, he made no direct reference to Taylor but his choice of lyrics, “have a toast to the douchebags,” autotuned a loud and clear message.

Kanye knows how cocky and how much of an a-hole he is but it’s also what makes him so darn lovable…in small doses of course.

But, surprisingly, he took the higher road last night. That was his apology. He has moved on and so should she.

After his performance decorated with ballerinas whose part in the set was as confusing as Will.I.Am’s black face and red cake sprinkles topped hair, he could have easily relished in the energy that was bestowed upon him but instead, he swagger walked off stage while the audience chanted his name.

Between he and the show’s opener, the always on-point rapper, Eminem with a featured appearance by the red hot, Rihanna, hands down were the best performers of the night.

But, it would not be fair of me to end this without mentioning the usually funny but a sorry attempt at what could have been a great comedic performance from the no tongue held, Chelsea “I Need To Fire My Writers” Handler.

A semi-frequent watcher of her show, Chelsea Lately because of her unforgiving abuse of the First Amendment, her jokes left me as excited as I was during my c-section and just as painful.

Maybe even more.

As someone who was looking forward to Chelsea’s “handling” of the VMAs since she was the first female in nearly two decades to do so, I was baffled by how she left me with a severe case of blue ovaries.

It was as if I was hyped up to feel something spectacular only to be told to get up, put my clothes back on and to go home because nothing was going to happen that night.

A sincere apology to any guy I personally made feel that way.

Besides the many wins and looks of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry’s “branded” nails, Cher’s surprise promo appearance, the animations of Nicki Minaj during a ridiculously dull pre-show, Mary J. Blige’s soulful and much needed feature, all on the stellar, budget-busting stage, most of the night was just a compilation of “we’ll do better next time, we promise” moments recorded in the VMAs history book.

Groomed for a Socialist Dictatorship

Groomed for a Socialist Dictatorship
A Commentary by J. D. Longstreet

America’s very own government is systematically destroying the United States of America. If this comes as a revelation to you – then where have you BEEN?

America’s destruction has been ongoing for some time now. But not until the election of the democrat controlled Congress in 2006 and the election of President Obama in 2008 did it swing into high gear and the real dismantling of our constitutional republic begin in earnest.

Today, America is just a shell of its former self. We have seen how quickly a determined enemy of the constitution can bring havoc to bear on our nation as we look back over the months since November 2006.

Like a cancer devouring its host from within the socialism of the Democratic Party and the Obama Regime have, little by little, brought America to her knees. There can be no doubt that America is dying and dying quickly.

Fortunately, there are some Americans who have taken notice of this silent attack on America. To their credit they are desperately trying to alert all Americans to the imminent death of our constitutional republic. These American patriots do not plan to stand by and watch America destroyed from within. They have banded together to make a last ditch effort to stanch the out flowing of the energy force from America’s socialist damaged veins. They are known by many names. The Tea Party is the best-known moniker.

There is method to the apparent madness of the liberal-socialists in the American government today. Many contend they are intentionally making an all out effort to collapse America’s system of government along with her financial and economic systems and then reform them under a strong centralized socialist government which will have the American citizen completely at the mercy of the socialist/Marxist government.

There is a concerted effort today, in America, to destroy capitalism. I have come to believe the destruction of capitalism is an integral part of the plan to collapse America’s economic system and replace it with socialism akin to the Soviet Union style economic system. No matter that it failed in the USSR, the American liberal-socialists believe they can succeed because they believe themselves smarter than the Soviets.

It has become clearer and clearer as the months of the Obama regime have dragged by that the intended end result -- if the liberal-socialists get their way -- will be a communist America.

So sure are the liberal-socialists of victory they have already begun laying the foundation for their socialist dictatorship. For evidence look to Obama’s “Czars.” Look at the Environmental Protection Agency power grabs. Look at the influence the “green movement” has on our government today. Observe America’s elite in business, entertainment, and, yes, the Mainstream Media kow-towing to Obama’s every whim as they try to ingratiate themselves to the Obama Regime convinced, as they are, that we are on the threshold of a socialist dictatorship in America.

Generations of Americans, educated in our government school system, have grown up believing that government can solve any problem -- and do it better that a free market.

As we said above, the effort to destroy America as a constitutional republic began long ago. For at least two generations our young scholars have been indoctrinated in liberal-socialism in our government schools. The masses were, even then, being prepared for this moment in American history.

For the past eighteen months to two years Americans have been shaking off their lethargy and coming fully awake and now -- they are ready to fight back. And fight they will.

“D-Day” is November 2nd, the Mid-Term Election. Americans intend to send a message, not only to the Obama Regime and to the entire US government, but to the European Socialist states, as well. That message is: Americans ARE DIFFERENT! Americans WILL LIVE FREE.

In the Mid-Term Election we intend to purge as many liberal-socialists and progressives, as we possibly can, from the government of the United States. And that is just step one.

For step two, we intend to do it all over again -- in the election of November 2012 -- when we intend to send Obama packing and cleanse the remaining liberal-socialists and progressives from our Congress.

Take it from one who grew up as a free American. America is no longer free. The only way we can regain the freedoms we have already lost and to stop our incredibly swift slide into the socialist sewer is to regain control of our government. It is an absolute must. This is a battle free Americans must win. The alternative is the hell of socialist slavery.

Imagine

We had early company this morning. Mr. kenju's brother stopped by on his way home  after playing golf in Pinehurst over the last four days. We got up very early (6am, which may not be early for some of you - but is for us!) Our younger daughter came over with a coffee cake she had made, and we all enjoyed cake, coffee and conversation for two hours. Then he had to get on the road for his eight hour trip - and we went back to bed for a nap. It was too short a visit, but we're planning for a better one next year.

It's a beautiful, breezy day in the neighborhood; sunny and warm, but with a hint of fall in the air and leaves dropping into the pool at an alarming rate. Sometimes we leave the pool open until October, but this year I don't want to chase leaves and clean the pool out daily, so we have the closing scheduled for the 22nd. I hate looking at the pool cover all winter - but it beats skimming the pool four times a day.

I took two frogs out of the skimmer this morning, and they seemed paralyzed by the coolness of the water. Both of them sat for along time in the place I set them down before hopping away. The cooler nights have lowered the water temperature to the mid 70's. I only know one person who wants to swim in water that cool - my granddaughter "G" - who never seems to mind the cold as long as there is water to swim in.

Babies in Waste Receptacles

We learn in the local media about an incident that occurred this weekend in Winston-Salem, NC.

Apparently, outside a Planned Parenthood clinic in that city, a newborn baby had been found dead, "in a blue storage bin".

This story, which the local media found newsworthy, abounds with irony.  While it is considered significant that a dead newborn baby is found outside the clinic, many others, of course, have likely lain dead in medical waste containers inside this type of clinic.  Planned Parenthood is the biggest abortion provider in the country.

Compounding the irony is the fact that the federal government subsidizes Planned Parenthood.  Our tax dollars help fund an organization that performs all those abortions.  Of further interest is the fact that Planned Parenthood also pushes contraception.  The combined approach of abortion and contraception is supposed to help make certain that "every child is a wanted child".  This strategy, however, did not work for the newborn baby found right outside the clinic.

Every human life possesses intrinsic value and worth and dignity.  It is right to mourn the loss of the newborn whose life has apparently been taken.  But we all should be much more attentive to the countless others who are having their lives snuffed out within Planned Parenthood clinics.  We should be attentive to the contents of the medical waste receptacles inside the clinic.

So who's No. 1?

I HATE IT WHEN a story says that the 500 yards rushing in a game were the second most by a college but doesn't say who was No. 1.

The Associated Press did that today when it said that Wake Forest's 54-48 win over Duke produced the second most points in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. Then it left the gaping void.

I remembered Clemson's 82-24 rout of Wake Forest in 1981 -- the Tigers' cheerleaders did a ton of pushups after each touchdown in that game -- but the story should have added that fact.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for answering my question. After reading your advice about not ticking off my bosses, I explained that while I was happy that my work on the piece had been recognized, I felt that adding my name to it would perhaps diminish the value of the article in the eyes of our readers as I'm neither a journalist nor a clean energy expert. Getting Emotional Over Dirt

You'd think that a blog about land use and zoning law would be, well, dry.  Maybe you'd be right, but when you stop to think about it there aren't many things people get more emotional about than what happens to their stuff, and the most important "stuff" they own is their land/house.  Trust me, if you want to fill the city council chambers just propose opening a landfill in the middle of a neighborhood, or changing the zoning from residential to commercial near an existing neighborhood.

Attorney Tom Terrell writes a very good blog about land use and I really like his most recent post, Getting Emotional Over Dirt.  An excerpt:

Land use, like the political cauldrons in which land use decisions are made, does not always follow logical and linear decision-making processes.  We study the legal and logical aspects of land in our universities, but the critical decisions that affect its development and changes are propelled, more often than not, through emotional decision-making.  I’ve written and spoken about this relatively unexplored phenomenon on many occasions.  The world of litigation is full of studies on how and why juries do as juries do.  Although they probably exist, I’ve never seen similar academic studies of how and why elected officials make certain decisions on land use following presentations at public hearings.

When we do study the emotional aspects of land use, chances are the fears and anxieties are hidden behind surrogate issues and the fearful and the anxious are elevated in stature by calling them “stakeholders,” almost as if they had an equal right to the use of the land as the person who owns it.

This past Sunday New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof blogged about public decisions being made because of fears of Islam (“Is Islamophobia the New Hysteria”), much the same as actions that were taken over the decades and centuries against Catholics and Germans and Mormons and Irish and Jews and Japanese where “fear spread in part because of misinformation.” When we are scared, he reminds us, we can do unconscionable things.

And here's a better way to do it.

    Good Food or Good Fortune?

Fall seems to have arrived and my family could not be more happy to have a break from the heat. Zoe has not been outside much at all as a result, and so today I decided to sit on the porch with her a bit. She loved it of course. Especially the wind on her face.

While we were sitting there enjoying the breeze and the afternoon sun I was a little startled to see a praying mantis arrive on the porch rail landing fairly close to us. I walked inside to tell my daughter about the creature as she had not seen one. She was thrilled as she examined it through the porch glass. “I just love that bug!” she exclaimed.

This was considerable improvement from last night’s bath. A house centipede, something I had never seen before this summer and a rather startling sight, settled onto the edge of Maya’s bath toy basket. The shriek that followed was straight out of a horror movie. My husband quickly addressed the situation by sending Maya out of the room and whapping the creature with a rolled up magazine.

This is kind of gross, so consider yourself warned.  After the whap, uh, legs went everywhere. I mean everywhere. I counted at least twenty of them scattered around the bottom of the tub. How many legs did that thing have, anyway? We definitely thought that one through before proceeding to a solution.

Despite our attempts to protect Maya from the gore she wandered in, looked into the tub and said matter-of-facty, “The bug is all over the place.” Then she wandered out again seemingly unscathed.

When she was delighted to see her first praying mantis I felt some relief. I mean it ‘s not like the bug is particularly cuddly, or pretty or something. Feeling strangely comforted I walked back out onto the porch and sat down. Within seconds Maya came flying out the door in her roller-skates to watch things a little more closely.

Here, the tone on the porch began to change a bit. The mantis moved back on her haunches, curled back her forearms and began to rock back and forth like a plotting ninja. I was expecting a hiss at any time and prepared to hit the ground to protect my little one. I ushered her to a sitting position, pulled off her skates and sent her back inside.

Now, I could have imagined the whole scenario. Goodness knows I’m lacking in sleep due to hourly nightly outbursts from my poor teething baby. Maybe the mantis was dancing with joy. Or swaying with the breeze. Or, maybe she was thinking dinner.

The she-bug settled down and eyed me with curiosity. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through her bug brain. Was she salivating over my brain, waiting for the right moment to tear my head off like so many others before me?

Luckily, she didn’t. She hung around rather contentedly and exlored a bit. She sat on the grill that was a gift from a moving neighbor. Then she wandered around the porch rail toward the brick wall.

Legend has it that praying mantis are symbols of good fortune. Was she there to bestow her good wishes? We’ll take a little adventure and good fortune anytime. With all that has been going on with Zoe I am choosing to take her visit as a good sign.

    Karo Syrup

For as long as I can remember I've had a hate-hate relationship with Karo Syrup.  My Granny used to serve waffles and pancakes with it and I found it absolutely revolting.  When my Mom ran out of maple syrup there was always a bottle of God-knows-how-old Karo in the back of the pantry to substitute, and I think that's largely why to this day I eat my 'cakes and waffles with almost no syrup.  I was reminded of my Karo-hate when I stumbled on this Boing-Boing post regarding an unbelievably disturbing vintage ad for Deep South Peanut Pie, which looks like a pecan pie with peanuts substituted for the pecans.  I don't think I'll be able to eat for a few days.

    African-Americans in Beaufort - 1995 Study

Excerpts from Beaufort's African-American History and Architecture by Peter B. Sandbeck, Historic Preservation Consultant. The project was done in 1995 for The Beaufort Historic Preservation Commission and was funded by the Town of Beaufort with a matching grant from the National Park Service, through the NC Department of Cultural Resources, Division of Archives and History.

INTRODUCTION: From 1800 to 1990, Beaufort’s black residents have numbered at least twenty-five percent of the total population, with that number rising to as much as fifty percent during and immediately after the Civil War. Despite such large numbers, the African-American society of this historic coastal port town has remained largely unknown and undocumented. Few of the thousands of tourists who visit the town’s historic waterfront every year are aware that blacks have been a vital part of Beaufort’s maritime culture since the eighteenth century. In its traditional location north of busy highway US 70 or Cedar Street, the black neighborhood remains separated from Beaufort’s older historic district and is very much a town within a town, a community with an important history. No Peace for the Israelis ... Alan Caruba

    No Peace for the Israelis
    By Alan Caruba

Writing in the Jerusalem Post recently, Daniel Gordis wrote “Life in our region has taught us that the first necessary step to defending yourself is acknowledging that someone else is out to destroy you.”

The peace talks the White House is sponsoring, much as previous administrations going back to Jimmy Carter have done, are doomed to failure. Just prior to the talks, four Israelis, one of whom was pregnant, were murdered and Hamas took credit for it. In Gaza, 3,000 turned out to celebrate the killings.

The Palestinian Authority, led by Mahmoud Abbas, is a fiction. It exists so that Israel can maintain to the world that it is willing to negotiate a settlement to the issue of territorial issues, but those issues have been settled by a series of wars against Israel going back to the day it was founded in 1948.

For Muslims, there can never been a settlement because Islam maintains that any land it formerly conquered remains theirs even if they no longer control it. That is why the proposed Ground Zero mosque was named Cardoba after the occupation of Spain from the eighth to the fifteenth century.

Ted Belman, writing on the topic of “the occupation”, cited international law, the Fourth Geneva Convention, regarding the West Bank and Gaza. Described as the occupied Palestinian territories, Belman pointed out that “Not only are they not occupied in a legal sense, but also they are not ‘Palestinian’ lands in a sovereign sense.”

“Prior to 1967, Jordon was in occupation of these territories, just as Israel is currently in occupation. It must be clearly understood that Israel’s occupation is not illegal and the UN has never claimed it to be. In fact, Resolution 242 permits Israel to remain inoccupation until they have an agreement on ‘secure and recognized borders.’” Thus, authority over the disputed territories was transferred as the result of the 1967 war against Israel.

Much of the United States today is the direct result of having won territory, largely from Mexico, in wars. A large swath was purchased from France in the Louisiana Purchase and a small section on the southern border was actually purchased from Mexico. We bought Alaska from the Russians.

As Belman pointed out, “The U.S. has traditionally, with the Carter administration being the only exception, refrained from describing the settlements as illegal and instead called them obstacles to peace. In September 2009, Obama went before the United Nations and declared ‘American does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements.’ This is closer to Carter’s position, but falls short of declaring them illegal.”

Former US ambassador to the UN, John Bolton, said at the time, “This is the most radical anti-Israel speech I can recall any president making.”

After insulting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his first trip to Washington, backing a UN investigation of the “humanitarian” effort to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza from the sea, and sending mixed signals regarding the debate over a mosque near Ground Zero, there are no doubts which side he’s on in this latest charade.

For this reason alone, neither the President’s, nor Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, can be seen as mediating the present meetings between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority in good faith. Neither is neutral about Israel or Jews.

Just as Jews cite the Torah and Christians cite the New Testament, Muslims look to their holy book, the Koran, to justify their current actions. To understand today’s turmoil wherever Muslims assert their claims, one must understand that the Koran and the Hadith, prophetic traditions based on it and Muhammad’s life, are filled with hatred for Jews and Christians.

Even with the attacks of 9/11 and others since then, Americans have been slow to grasp that they are locked into a religious war with Islam. A society where religious tolerance is part of its most prized documents cannot understand a religion whose holy book calls for the conquest of all other religions and global political dominance.

There will be no peace for Israel, for the United States, and for the world so long as a religion that celebrates murder and death continues to pursue its mission based on the myths of Muhammad and his followers.

    A.R.E. Camp

These photos were taken A.R.E. Camp, in Southeastern Virginia, in August.

My children attended this camp and now their children attend every summer, and most of them went back in August for this camp reunion, which was attended by over 350 former campers and their families. In some cases, there were four generations who had gone to the camp over the years.

A.R.E. stands for The Association for Research and Enlightenment, which is headquartered in Virginia Beach, VA.

It is a beautiful place, full of loving, accepting and compassionate people. If you are seeking a sleep-away camp for your children, I couldn't recommend this one any more heartily!

    Unlucky 13

I WAS SHOCKED WHEN I saw that Virginia Tech had lost to James Madison 21-16 today. The Dukes are in a lower division, and the Hokies were ranked 13th in the country.

The upset will remind people of Appalachian State's 34-32 win over then-fifth-ranked Michigan a few years ago, but this shocker may be bigger. App State was excellent that year, and Michigan wasn't worthy of its No. 5 ranking.

It'll be interesting to see how Virginia Tech (0-2) and Madison fare the rest of the season.

All The World's a Stage at GTCC

    By Liv
    Staff Writer

Back to where it all began for me in 1995. Shoved fresh onto the streets by the 40th something in education school system in the country I ended up in GTCC's theatre program. After a short stint in Hollywood, a SAG membership and a few student films to my credit, I'm back to where it all started. This time however, I've decided to pursue a more academic route. I won't lie, the idea did cross my mind of going back into theater, but unfortunately my long term goals are in conflict with that calling. I reserve the right to change my mind.

The truth is, I promised my readers here on Greensboring, I would report back to you the experiences of going back to school. It's been fantastic to learn new things, and be around people who want to learn. It's a lot of hard work. I push myself harder at this than I've ever pushed myself before. It's hard to find a free moment these days, but on Fridays I do have a spare hour, and for the heck of it I went in search of my past.

In 1995, GTCC's theatre program was a struggling arm of the small technical school. Dr. William Lewis, affectionately known as just "Bill" attempted to carve some concepts of high theater etiquette into our barbarian redneck minds. A converted 1950's lecture hall the size of a double wide trailer served as a performance space, while a funky psychedelic flower power painted VW van served as the scenery shop. It was around this time when Bill brought word of the possibility that one day GTCC may build a new auditorium for theater majors. Too late for us. The next few years I'd spend in California working under the legendary actor; Jay Varela. Winning award and praise, I gained respect and applause in the local theater community because of formal education under Bill Lewis. I tried to keep in contact, but eventually as the story generally goes, I went on to other things in life.

So on Friday during my break I decided to check out the new theater. It's tucked away in the hospitality building and wow is it gorgeous. While they're ripping apart the old building to make way for renovations, (I almost cried tears of hate when I realized this.) I snuck down the back hall of the new theater and read the , then popped through the door of the stage (half expecting a class) to find an empty vacant theater. I stood stage center and looked at my imaginary audience. Instantly I began to belt out Shakespeare. I recalled lines from the plays of Lanford Wilson, Tennesee Williams and for a moment reality ceased to exist. No one was around. I suppose in some fitting way, I half expected for someone to walk in on me like they do in the movies- but it never happened. In the end I exited stage left and told myself "snap out of it"! The world doesn't need a 30 year old washed up drama has-been back on stage.

One of the current professors at GTCC's theater program is Michael Kamtman whom in 1995 was working for the N.C. Shakespeare Festival as a professional actor, and was the director for Redwood Curtain at GTCC who I had the loveliness to work with him on. When I walked past his ajared office door, part of me wanted to step in and say "Hiya!". But I couldn't. I wouldn't. For one, that just might be weird. After all, here I am a failed human being who happens to be in the same grade she last was when we last met 15 years ago. I'd sound like a retard. More to the point is I knew if I stepped in that office, my plans of following through on school, without distraction would be over. I'd be asking "when are auditions?" and trying out for Annie in the next stage production. No, we can't have that. For the sake of the Queen and her country... and her college, Liv must stay far, far away from any shiny instruments, Fresnel lights, or opportunities to belt out "the sun will come out tomorrow."

They Destroyed My Towers! ... Alan Caruba

    They Destroyed My Towers!
    By Alan Caruba

Whenever I drove into New York via the Lincoln Tunnel, I would join the other cars on the long, graceful curve leading to its entrance and, looking to my left, I could see across the Hudson River. At the tip of Manhattan, the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stood as symbols of our economic power. On occasion, I had dined in Windows on the World, a restaurant located on the 106th and 107th floors of the North Tower and marveled at the panorama of New Jersey on one side, the outer boroughs on the other, and the dazzling view of Manhattan.

Whenever I think about September 11, 2001, I have only one emotion and that is a deep, unrelenting anger that a group of murderous, suicidal Islamists destroyed “my towers.”

They killed some 3,000 people when you factor in the attack on the Pentagon along with the passengers of the four commercial airliners used to perpetrate the destruction.

It is a wonder to me that Americans then and since exercised such restraint, such tolerance that the nation’s small population of Muslims not only did not suffer attacks, but today continue to build mosques for worship.

The effort to build one so close to Ground Zero demonstrates how obtuse and out of touch the political leadership is with mainstream Americans. The odious behavior of New York’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg is beyond comprehension. The President tipped his hand at a White House dinner held to celebrate Ramadan, backing away slightly the following day enough to deflect criticism. Those proposing the Ground Zero mosque demonstrate the arrogance and contempt for Americans and for all “unbelievers” that lies at the core of Islam, but American leaders of varying religions have fallen over one another to excuse this exercise in triumphalism.

The Crusades from 1095 to 1291 were an effort to recapture the Judeo-Christian holy land from Muslim conquest. Having invaded Spain in 711, Muslims would rule for seven centuries until driven out of their last stronghold, Grenada, in 1492. In 1683, Muslims were decisively defeated near Vienna. How different Europe would have otherwise been.

Islam is a religion of the sword despite its widespread acceptance. Its barbarity is on display on a daily basis whether killing Christian missionaries in Afghanistan or Israeli civilians, a pregnant mother, her husband and their two children a week ago.

A sane society would have cleared away the rubble of 9/11 and rebuilt the Twin Towers, but Ground Zero, in terms of new structures nine years after the attack, remains barely begun.

Al Qaeda and all those who subscribe to its intent to destroy the West, the civilization developed in the West, and the freedoms championed by the West, remain to be defeated, while they continue to threaten India and even Europe once again.

The further we get from 9/11, the dimmer the embers of anger become for those with short memories or no grasp of history. The irony is that 9/11 reflects the long memories of many Islamists whose religion demands that all lands formerly conquered in the name of Islam be regained and that all people who follow a faith other than Islam be reduced to dhimmi, second-class citizens ruled by Muslims.

The World Trade Center belonged to the world. They were my towers and your towers. They represented a world bound together in trade, a world that set a value on all manner of goods and commodities, a world in which jobs and wealth were being created.

The World Trade Center represented a rational world. Today, nine years later, the dispatches from the Middle East, from Afghanistan, the Palestinian enclaves, from Pakistan, from Yemen, and from an Iran bent on acquiring nuclear weapons, are filled with news of an irrational, dysfunctional society; an Islamist rat’s nest, still seeking to destroy Israel, and still testing our borders and defenses in order to destroy America.

It is a good day to get angry once more, to resolve that we and the West shall not be defeated.

Guarding Our Souls by Henri Nouwen

The great danger of the turmoil of the end-time in which we live is losing our souls. Losing our souls means losing touch with our center, our true call in life, our mission, our spiritual task. Losing our soul means becoming so distracted by and preoccupied with all that is happening around us that we end up fragmented, confused, and erratic. Jesus is very aware of that danger. He says: “Take care not to be deceived, because many will come using my name and saying, ‘I am the one’ and ‘The time is near at hand’ Refuse to join them” (Luke 21:8).

In the midst of anxious times there are many false prophets, promising all sorts of “salvations.” It is important that we be faithful disciples of Jesus, never losing touch with our true spiritual selves.

Democrats Break With Obama on Bush Tax Cuts
President Obama has been vocal in his opposition to rolling back the Bush-era tax cuts for families making more than $250,000. But as his party's position in the polls continues to worsen and the economy remains stagnant, a number of high-profile Democrats, including Senators Jim Webb and Evan Bayh, are breaking with the president and voicing their support for extending the cuts. Is this a political year stunt, or are congressional Democrats really ready to force Obama's hand?

Republicans are heading into the final weeks of the midterm campaign with the political climate highly in their favor, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Americans are increasingly frustrated by a lack of economic progress, deeply dissatisfied with the federal government and critical of President Obama's leadership.

    Lurking for Peanuts

Just when I think Amanda Emily has unearthed every early broadcast photo of note, she excavates another frame for the ages. Her latest discovery deserves to hang in some hallowed hallway of The Lenslinger Institute, or at the very least printed on the kind of postcards one finds at one's seedier t-shirt shops. Either way, it's a safe bet the story behind this image is a lot more interesting than whatever Sexy Robot Fairy Wars (in 3-D!) Hollywood is cookin' up.

    Working for Peanuts

    From Feeding the News Beast...

At the Jack Dempsey vs. Tommy Gibbons world championship heavyweight fight at Shelby Montana on July 4, 1923, newsreel cameraman were not permitted to shoot footage of the fight. Henry Hardy, disguised as a peanut vendor, shot footage on a hand cranked camera he smuggled in. He got the pictures of the fight and came back to the office somewhat of a hero among his peers.
