About Kesher Talk

  • "Kesher" means "connection" in Hebrew. The banner image is the mosaic floor of a 6th c. synagogue in Jericho, showing a menorah flanked by a shofar and lulav; the inscription reads "Shalom Al Yisrael." (This synagogue was destroyed by Arab vandals a few years ago. The condition of the mosaic floor is unknown.)

Carnival of the Protestors, later that same evening

If I wasn't sick I would have gone to this party. it would have been a great antidote to those conservative book panels.

Carnival of the Protestors, the sequel

Previous Carnival of the Protestors entries here, here, here, here, and here.

So I'm spending all day home sick, but I am going to be back out there tomorrow.

Today's big event was supposed to be A31. (August 31, get it?)

Again

Benjamin Kerstein lives in Beersheva. Today there were two simultaneous suicide bombings on buses there. This is what Benjamin saw.

Greetings from P-town

He's baaaaaaack.

UPDATE: Andrew, you need to either get caught up on the issues or go back in the hammock. The Purple Heart bandages don't "mock the military." They specifically mock John Kerry, for making much more out of his superficial wounds than they warranted. Therefore they support the military, who resent having their reputation tarnished by Kerry's self-aggrandizement.

Did you actually talk to any enlisted personnel about how they feel about the band-aids?

UPDATE: The GOP tries to enforce taking the high road.

UPDATE: Virginia Postrel agrees with me.

Carnival of the Protestors, the evening after

Previous Carnival of the Protestors entries here, here, here, and here.

Protest Warrior after-action report, with pix and video of attack by anarchists.
More pix of Sunday's confrontation. (Plus a few of Saturday evening's meeting on the roof.)
Link love from Glenn, with a good point about PW's coolness factor, which drives most protests and some voting patterns. (The Palestinians will not start building a civil stable society until suicide bombing is no longer cool.)
Also lots of reports at the PW forum.

Further evidence of liberal slant on campus

According to Time:
. . . according to data compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, 72% of university employees' $16.7 million in contributions during this election cycle has gone to the Democratic Party. The figure for Harvard is 97%, and every penny of the $156,000 from the College of William and Mary has gone to the Democrats. Employees of the University of California have given more money to John Kerry's presidential campaign than have workers at any other business or institution; Harvard employees are No. 2. (Full disclosure: employees of Time Warner, which publishes TIME, are No. 5.) George W. Bush has no universities (and no Time Warner) in his top-20 list of employee donations.

Jews on the Left make decisions

The Burning Man Festival starts Monday, and - recapitulating the hippie vs. SDS split of the late 60s - many counter-culture types are torn about whether to go for utopian vision in Nevada or gritty confrontation in Manhattan.

Well, if you are Jewish and heading out for Burning Man, you probably already know about the Black Rock JCC, home to Congregation Bamidbar. If not, check out the schedule of davening and other events.

If you're Jewish and planning to protest in Manhattan, Congregation B'nai Jeshurun - flagship of institutional NYC Leftist Judaism - has a list of events. I'll post more Jewish Leftist events as I find out about them. More links on the anti-RNC goings on here.

Carnival of the Protestors

The Republican National Convention is almost upon us, about 15 blocks from my apartment. Here is an informal roundup of planned events that are not taking place within Madison Square Garden.

Bookmark this page from NYMetro for a schedule of RNC-related events and interesting articles. I especially like My Escape from the Zabar's Left, a recounting of a political journey similar to many of the testimonies from my ongoing recovering progressives' support group. (Tons of former Gore voters for Bush here.)

Jews in odd places: China

A once-thriving Jewish culture in Shanghai's Tilanqiao area is to be revived on the site of its former heyday.

Almost 30,000 Jewish refugees settled in the area, around the northern Bund, during World War II, and set up schools, libraries, cafes, synagogues and even their own newspapers.

Many of the exiles were highly talented professionals -- teachers, editors, reporters, writers, painters, musicians and sportsmen.

At the end of the war, they gradually left for Israel, the United States and Canada.

After nearly five decades ignoring its Jewish legacy, Shanghai is waking up to this unique part of the city's history and looking at preserving aspects of the Tilanqiao area, which has been listed as one of the 12 key historical zones in the city.

Street scene

I helped with this campaign table a few weeks ago, but I missed the week when the reporter showed up because I was leading services that morning (hey, you knew I wasn't shomer-Shabbas . . .) I will vouch for the mix of races and ethnicities which bought items and voiced support for Bush, and my fellow volunteers were gracious and delightful people, even though I noted that I am pro-choice and pro-gay marriage.

Jews in Sports: Baseball

The Celebration of Jews in Baseball will be held Sunday and Monday at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. Expected to join the two days of nostalgia and congratulations are such former players as Ron Blomberg of the Yankees, the first designated hitter, and Elliot Maddox, who played for the Mets and Yankees. Joe Ginsburg, an original Met, will be there, too, as will Ken Holtzman, Mike Epstein and Norm Sherry. Others are Boston Red Sox executive vice president Charles Steinberg, Sandy Koufax biographer Jane Levey and Aviva Kempner, who made a documentary about Hank Greenberg.
