Fahrenheit 9/11 Sneak Preview: The Sequel

Here's another sneak peek at Michael Moore's documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opens June 25th. Anyone fascinated by the 9/11 commission's minute-by-minute breakdown of who did what on that dreadful day was surely brought up short by the image of Bush sitting in a second grade class and blithely continuing to read to school kids after being told by an aide that "America is under attack." Here's the scoop: Michael Moore has extensive footage of that moment and Bush looks like a deer caught in the headlights. The combination of what he does/n't do, our knowledge of what was happening in New York City and Michael Moore's scathing voice-over is damning. It's impossible to buy Bush's argument today that he wanted to project an image of calm -- he looks like someone unsure of what to do next when no one is there to tell him. How did Moore get the footage? He simply asked. US Bishops Play Politics With The Body of Christ

US Roman Catholic bishops are now officially playing politics with the sacrament of Holy Communion by branding any Catholic politician who supports a woman's right to choose as "cooperating in evil" and possibly refusing them communion. Any Catholic politician who doesn't disavow such an anti-American, undemocratic principle doesn't deserve your vote. Many bishops seem to oppose such a stance -- only about 20 of more than 300 are creating this fuss. But the statement released is pretty namby-pamby and tries to please both sides -- presumably because of pressure from Rome -- so it takes the absurd position that politicians must represent Catholic viewpoints only. This conveniently ignores the ailing Pope John Paul II's lifelong labors to repair the Church's relationship with other religions by offering respect and dignity -- not to mention the frightening past of the US when constitutional amendments were proposed that attacked Catholics and the idea of a Catholic president was greeted with fear amid charges Rome might do exactly what it is now attempting to do.

If the Church wants to deny communion to those who don't support its viewpoint on abortion being legal (which is far different from personally approving of abortion, of course), why stop with politicans? Why,because the Church would find itself refusing communion to more than 60 percent of all Catholics. What about divorce? Shouldn't the Church deny communion and brand as "cooperating in evil" any politician who refuses to outlaw divorce? The same goes for contraception. Since no bishop has even suggested any of this, you know this is all about politics and nothing about morality or the Catholic religion. Bush Touts Qaeda-Saddam Ties by E-Mail, on Stump

President Bush is pressing ahead with charges of Iraqi ties to al Qaeda in campaign speeches and e-mails to key constituents, despite a government commission's finding of no collaboration.

In fact, the White House on Friday asserted support from the commission, which as part of its probe into the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks reported this week there was no evidence that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda had developed a "collaborative relationship."

"9-11 Commission Staff Report Confirms Administration's Views of al Qaeda/Iraq Ties," a headline read in a White House e-mail to Jewish leaders on Friday.

Bush also used his first campaign swing since the commission's staff report was issued to repeat charges about high-level contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda.
