Even in victory, the American people can be so clueless

More from that Newsweek poll that Joe mentioned earlier:
While a bare majority of 51 percent called the Democrats' victory "a good thing," even more said they were concerned about some of the actions a Democratic Congress might take, including 78 percent who were somewhat or very concerned that it would seek too hasty a withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

Another 69 percent said they were concerned that the new Congress would keep the administration "from doing what is necessary to combat terrorism," and two-thirds said they were concerned it would spend too much time investigating the administration and Republican scandals.
At some the American people need to grow up. If they aren't ready for us to leave Iraq, then fine: stay in Iraq. More American soldiers will die for no reason, the civil war will get worse, we will be directly responsible for breeding even more terrorists, and we'll probably have a draft sometime over the next two years. But if that's what it will take for the American people to learn that history is not without consequences, then so be it. I see no reason that Democrats should fall on their swords so that the American people and the Republicans can avoid taking responsibility for their actions.

Oh yeah, and we'll also give police the right to take Americans away in the middle of the night without a warrant, and waterboard their husbands, wives and children - in the name of public safety, of course. Then after 20,000 or 30,000 Americans are missing, and probably dead (in Argentina, they used to drug political prisoners and drop them from helicopters into the sea - you see, the authorities simply had to keep the country safe), the American people can ask themselves what went wrong.

We are paying for our citizens' ignorance of history. Perhaps they need to learn the hard way, by giving them what they want and letting them suffer the consequences. At some point, it may be the only way to fix the problem. Otherwise, we fall on our sword for them, and they vote us out in two years and continue the carnage in Iraq and on our civil liberties. "Lots of" religious right leaders knew #1 evangelical leader, Ted Haggard, was gay long before the scandal - and did nothing about it

What a bunch of freaking hypocrites. They knew that the number one leader of their movement, a movement devoted to anti-gay causes, was gay, and they didn't do a damn thing about it.

What a bunch of freaking hypocrites.

This is akin to being a pedophile, in these people's warped, bigoted minds, yet they did nothing about their leader being one of the abominations they daily rant against. They tolerated a known gay man running their entire movement while trying to pass anti-gay legislation to ruin the rest of our lives. They thumbed their nose at the word of God because it was convenient.

It seems that religious right leader Lou Shelon has some questions to answer, including: Who else among the religious right leaders knew Haggard was gay and did nothing about it?

From Jewish Week, via Talk2Action and dogemperor:
Sheldon disclosed that he and “a lot” of others knew about Haggard’s homosexuality “for awhile ... but we weren’t sure just how to deal with it.”

Months before a male prostitute publicly revealed Haggard’s secret relationship with him, and the reverend’s drug use as well, “Ted and I had a discussion,” explained Sheldon, who said Haggard gave him a telltale signal then: “He said homosexuality is genetic. I said, no it isn’t. But I just knew he was covering up. They need to say that.”
Boy, Lou Sheldon sure is up on his gay code. I didn't realize that people who think being gay is genetic - like, uh, scientists who have actually studied it - are per se all gay because they think it's genetic. What a fascinating man. And a hypocrite. Read More......

Dowd dissects the election

Maureen Dowd discussed testosterone and its impact on the elections in her column today. She captured the sentiments of the country noting that "Voters were sick of phony swaggering, blustering and bellicosity, absent competency and accountability."

Then, Ms. Dowd, a particular favorite of AMERICAblog, sliced and diced the GOP in one succinct paragraph:
Republicans were oddly oblivious to the fact that they had turned into a Thomas Nast cartoon: an unappetizing tableau of bloated, corrupt, dissembling, feckless white hacks who were leaving kids unprotected. Tom DeLay and Bob Ney sneaking out of Congress with dollar bills flying out of their pockets. Denny Hastert playing Cardinal Bernard Law, shielding Mark Foley. Rummy, cocky and obtuse as he presided over an imploding Iraq, while failing to give young men and women in the military the armor, support and strategy they needed to come home safely. Dick Cheney, vowing bullheadedly to move full speed ahead on Iraq no matter what the voters decided. W. frantically yelling about how Democrats would let the terrorists win, when his lame-brained policies had spawned more terrorists.
Bush and Rove doubted the testosterone of the American people. They thought we would cower in fear. They were wrong. Americans, or most of us anyway, are sick of the way Bush tried to frighten the country for political reasons. As Harry Reid would say, we got our mojo back. Read More......

Racism at "Investor's Business Daily"

I don't think I've read anything that has struck me as this racist in a long time, let alone an editorial from a leading American business publication.

Regardless of one's views on racial profiling, Investor's Business Daily, a rather high-profile business publication, appears to have a problem with Arab- and Muslim- Americans per se. How dare a Web site be published in Arabic? How dare Americans celebrate a Muslim holiday? How dare a congressman look after the interests of his constituents who are Arab-American or Muslim-American?

Then, after all of that, Investor's Business Daily ends their racist diatribe with the following gem:
[Michigan congressman John] Conyers led the defense of Bill Clinton in last decade's impeachment hearings and is clearly out for blood. So are many of the constituents he serves.
Excuse me? Many of John Conyers Arab-American and Muslim-American constituents are "out for blood"? What is this kind of racist garbage doing in one of America's top business publications, as an editorial no less?

Feel free to contact Investor's Business Daily and ask them what their problem is with freedom: ibdnews@investors.com Read More......

AP understatement: Things aren't going Bush's way

No, things aren't going Bush's way. Thankfully:
For a relentlessly optimistic President Bush, this is a season of disappointment, surprise and setbacks.

At home and around the world, things aren't going his way. With Bush's legacy-building time running out, Americans sent a pretty clear message in Tuesday's election that they were angry at him and wanted change. Though Bush's name wasn't on the ballot, voters took revenge on the Republican Congress and put the Democrats in charge of both the Senate and House.

In an awkward bit of timing, Bush will be globe-trotting when Congress returns to town next week to open its lame-duck session, taking up business the White House deems vital.
Bush still is the President and can continue to inflict damage on the U.S. and the world. But, it's going to be harder now.

All week I've had this feeling that I'm part of America again. For six years, so many of us have been brutalized and targeted by the GOP for partisan political reasons. It's good to be back. And, it's even better to watch Bush finally get his comeuppance. Read More......

Dems. vow to fix Alternative Minimum Tax

The GOP has spent the past six years providing tax cuts for the uber-rich. Meanwhile, more and more middle-class Americans have been slammed by the alternative minimum tax (AMT). Because the AMT didn't affect their constituents, Republicans never fixed it. Democrats are making it a top priority:
Democratic leaders this week vowed to make the alternative minimum tax a centerpiece of next year's budget debate, saying the levy threatens to unfairly increase tax bills for millions of middle-class families by the end of the decade.

The complex and expensive tax was designed to prevent the super-rich from using deductions, credits and other shelters to avoid paying the Internal Revenue Service. But because of rising incomes, the tax is expected to expand to more than 30 million taxpayers in 2010 from 3.8 million mostly well-off households in 2006.
The AMT is a tax increase the GOP was willing to foist on middle class Americans. But there's a new sheriff in town. Finally. Read More......

Saturday Morning Open Thread

Okay, I'm watching the Today Show. Alan Chambers, the head of Exodus, the ex-gay group, is on explaining how he "came out" of homosexuality. Okay. Sure. He's soooo credible. The right wingers want Americans to think being gay is a choice. If that's the case, there is less support for equal rights for gays and lesbians. The so-called "ex-gays" play right in to their hands.

Fortunately, there is a real medical professionl on the show who said therapies to change sexual orientation do not work. It's not a choice. Ted Haggard, Alan Chambers and the rest of the ex-gays should just deal with it. Activist and author Wayne Besen wrote a book, Anything But Straight: Unmasking the Scandals and Lies Behind the Ex-gay Myth, that, as the title indicates, exposes the ex-gay movement.

Ted Haggard will probably be the next poster boy for the ex-gays.
