Obama Job Approval Ratings Unchanged from September
As Ratings of Household Financial Situations Drop

A total of 43% of Americans say they approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as president and 48% say they disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job according to the latest survey from the American Research Group. When it comes to Obama's handling of the economy, 38% of Americans approve and 51% disapprove. In September, 44% of Americans approved of the job Obama was doing and 51% disapproved. When rating Obama's handling of the economy in September, 40% approved and 56% disapproved.

Among Americans registered to vote, 42% approve of the way Obama is handling his job as president and 50% disapprove. On Obama's handling of the economy, 38% of registered voters approve and 51% disapprove.

A total of 46% of Americans say their household financial situations are getting worse, up from 39% in September, and 33% say they expect their household financial situations to be worse a year from now, up from 29% in September. Of the 48% of Americans disapproving of the way Obama is handling his job as president, 63% say their household financial situations are getting worse and 47% say they expect their household financial situations to be worse in a year.

The results presented here are based on 1,100 completed telephone interviews conducted among a nationwide random sample of adults 18 years and older. The interviews were completed October 17 through 20, 2010. The theoretical margin of error for the total sample is plus or minus 2.6 percentage points, 95% of the time, on questions where opinion is evenly split.

Overall, 43% of Americans say that they approve of the way Barack Obama is handling his job as president, 48% disapprove, and 9% are undecided.

Among Republicans (31% of adults registered to vote in the survey and 28% of all adults in the survey), 6% approve of the way Obama is handling his job and 88% disapprove. Among Democrats (33% of adults registered to vote in the survey and 30% of all adults in the survey), 77% approve and 17% disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job. Among independents (36% of adults registered to vote in the survey and 33% of all adults in the survey), 41% approve and 48% disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job as president.

Overall, 38% of Americans say that they approve of the way Barack Obama is handling the economy, 51% disapprove, and 4% are undecided. Among registered voters, 38% approve and 51% disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy.

Among Republicans, 4% approve of the way Obama is handling the economy and 90% disapprove. Among Democrats, 72% approve of the way Obama is handling the economy and 14% disapprove. Among independents, 35% approve and 52% disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy.

A total of 24% of Americans say that the national economy is getting better, 30% say it is staying the same, and 46% say the national economy is getting worse.

Among those saying they approve of the way Obama is handling his job, 52% say getting better, 40% say staying the same, and 8% say getting worse. Of those saying they disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job, 2% say getting better, 19% say staying the same, and 79% say getting worse.

A total of 39% of Americans say they believe the national economy will be better a year from now, 27% say it will be the same, and 24% say it will be worse.

Among those saying they approve of the way Obama is handling his job, 75% say better, 15% say the same as today, and 2% say worse than today. Among those saying they disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job as president, 12% say better, 37% say the same, and 40% say worse.

Overall, 55% of Americans say they believe that the national economy is in a recession, 23% say they do not believe the economy is in a recession, and 22% are undecided.

Among those saying they approve of the way Obama is handling his job, 42% say the national economy is in a recession, 42% say the national economy is not in a recession, and 16% are undecided. Of those saying they disapprove of the way Obama is handling his job, 70% say the national economy is in a recession, 7% say the national economy is not in a recession, and 23% are undecided.

A total of 26% of Americans rate the national economy as excellent, very good, or good and 73% rate it as bad, very bad, or terrible.

When it comes to rating their household financial situations, 58% of Americans give an excellent, very good, or good rating and 41% give a bad, very bad, or terrible rating.

Looking to a year from now, 25% of Americans say that they think their household financial situations will be better than today, 34% say the same as today, and 33% say worse than today.
