Cindy Jacobs: If Latinos Vote Against Gay Marriage, God Told Me He'll Grant Them Comprehensive Immigration Reform

God has personally spoken to evangelical whackadoodle Cindy Jacobs to let her know that IF the nation's Latinos vote against gay marriage, he'll reward them by allowing the advancement of comprehensive immigration reform. God is SO motherfucking omnipotent, but he's also not above a little vote trading. So Sayeth Cindy.

ATLANTA: Eddie Long Files Court Papers Denying Sex With Young Men

Bishop Eddie Long yesterday filed court papers denying that he'd had sex with young men in his congregation. Long is being sued by four male parishioners who allege that he used his position as church leader to coerce them into sex.
In his responses, Long acknowledged he took the young men on trips and that he showed them affection, as in hugs, but denied any sexual contact occurred, the AJC reported. The men called Long "Daddy," "Bishop" and "Granddaddy," but Long said many members of his congregation called those names as well, the AJC reported. "Bishop Long admits that he mentors many young men from challenged backgrounds who have often been without the benefit of a male role model," according to his filings as reported by the AJC. The court documents describe Long as as a "bold revolutionary spiritual leader" who puts "special emphasis on outreach to men, reinforcing to men the importance of partnering with a ministry that will grow them spiritually." The accusations against Long were somewhat shocking to many because of Long's strong anti-gay views, including a ministry as part of his church that works to "convert" gay people. Long also led a march through the streets of Atlanta against gay marriage as well as other for other issues, including health care.

UK Study: Alcohol Is The Worst Drug

It seems self-apparent to me, but a new study out of the UK declares that alcohol is the worst drug for society, based on the number of people whose lives it affects adversely. According to the study's authors, governments should be focusing more on alcohol abuse than the war on drugs.
The study involved 16 criteria, including a drug's affects on users' physical and mental health, social harms including crime, "family adversities" and environmental damage, economic costs and "international damage". The modeling exercise concluded that heroin, crack and methylamphetamine, also known as crystal meth, were the most harmful drugs to individuals, but alcohol, heroin and crack cocaine were the most harmful to society. When the scores for both types of harm were added together, alcohol emerged as the most harmful drug, followed by heroin and crack. The findings run contrary to the government's long-established drug classification system, but the paper's authors argue that their system - based on the consensus of experts - provides an accurate assessment of harm for policy makers. "Our findings lend support to previous work in the UK and the Netherlands, confirming that the present drug classification systems have little relation to the evidence of harm," the paper says. "They also accord with the conclusions of previous expert reports that aggressively targeting alcohol harms is a valid and necessary public health strategy."
The startled television reports I saw last night completely missed the point of the study and openly wondered "how in the world" booze could be worse than crack. Oy.

Quote Of The Day - Lady Bunny

"Alan Cumming recently wrote that he was so fed up with Democrats’ inaction on gay issues that he was tempted to note vote in the midterm elections. This comes after two years of hearing gays whine “I voted for Hillary” whenever someone gripes about Obama. Well, Hillary isn’t running in the approaching midterms. So stop being such babies and deal with the choices in front of you. Or prepare to lose -- big. [snip]

"We can’t permit the most extreme brand of Republican to arise in decades to gain ground in Congress. For better or for worse, Democrats are the party which leans toward supporting gay rights in general. They’re in deep trouble because everyone’s broke and people tend to blame the party in power. Even in a robust economy, midterm elections tend to unseat incumbents. But just look at the freak show which is waiting in the wings if you don’t exercise your vote. Staying home is simply not an option. Pressing the Democrats who remain in office on gay issues after the midterms is a wonderful idea -- but you can’t do that if there are too few left in Congress to enact the changes you want." - Lady Bunny, writing for Out Magazine.

Apparently Jeebus doesn't care too much whether you fed the poor or healed the sick. Blah, blah, BORING. BREAKING: Federal Appeals Court Issues Indefinite Stay On Overturn Of DADT

In a suckily timed Election Eve ruling, late this afternoon the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals indefinitely extended their stay on the overturn of DADT.
In an eight-page order, the judges said they were persuaded by the Department of Justice's argument that U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Phillips' worldwide injunction against the 1993 policy "will seriously disrupt ongoing and determined efforts by the Administration to devise an orderly change of policy." Monday's decision means gay Americans who disclose their sexual orientations still can't enlist in the armed forces and can be discharged. It also heightens pressure on the Obama administration to persuade the U.S. Senate to repeal the 1993 law before a new Congress is sworn in.
The Court also gave the DOJ until January 24th to file their broader appeal against Judge Phillips' ruling. And the Log Cabin Republicans now have until February 22nd to respond to that.

REACTIONS

Lambda Legal
"Today's ruling means additional months or even years of needless suffering by lesbian, gay and bisexual service members, who must continue to live in fear of discovery until the appeals process is complete – or until Congress or the President steps up to the plate. But it's important to remember that today's ruling was not: a consideration of the merits of the case. That remains for another day. Each day that 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' remains in effect, it destroys lives and careers, undermines national security, and forces the discharge of the very personnel our military needs in a time of war. The pressure is now on Congress to repeal this fundamentally un-American law – and on the President, who can issue a stop-loss order to put an immediate end to discharges under 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell.'"
Log Cabin Republicans
"Log Cabin Republicans is disappointed that 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' will continue to burden our armed forces, undermine national security and limit the freedom of our men and women in uniform. Despite this temporary setback, Log Cabin remains confident that we will ultimately prevail on behalf of servicemembers' constitutional rights. In the meantime, we urge President Obama to use his statutory stop-loss power to halt discharges under this discriminatory and wasteful policy."
Human Rights Campaign
"Every day that 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' is in force, Americans are losing out on the best and brightest service members defending our country. For the good of our national security, the endless legal wrangling and political posturing has to stop. This is the year for the President to lead and for Congress to clean up the mess it made when it enacted this discriminatory and unconstitutional law nearly two decades ago.”
Servicemembers United
"It is really unfortunate that the government has tricked the Ninth Circuit into believing that 'enormous consequences,' 'immediate harm,' and 'irreparable injury' will result from a continuation of the injunction," said Alexander Nicholson, Executive Director of Servicemembers United and the only named veteran plaintiff in the case. "By the government's own admission elsewhere, none of these predicted consequences or injuries have come to pass while the law has been enjoined, and the Defense Department has even voluntarily created a de facto moratorium on discharges by further increasing the level of discharge authority. It is concerning that the government can so blatantly pull one over on an appeals court, and it is equally frustrating that such a distinguished court would allow itself to be fooled so obviously and so publicly in the name of 'deference.' Abdication is more like it."
More reactions will be added to this post as they arrive.

Quote Of The Day - David Frum

"Halloween is overwhelmingly an adult holiday. This year, for example, Americans spent an estimated $800 million on costumes for children, $1 billion on costumes for adults. Where did that adult dress-up party begin? As best we can tell: in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood. In the 1970s, that neighborhood emerged as the heart of a new home-owning, bourgeois, coupled gay community. A local variety store had long sponsored a Halloween street festival for kids. In the 1970s, the street festival transitioned into an adult party of lavish costumed theatricality. The 'Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence' -- a troupe of transvestite nuns -- got their start here.

"The Castro Halloween party spread to other gay neighborhoods in the 1980s: Greenwich Village, West Hollywood, Key West, Florida. In 1994, University of Florida anthropologist Jerry Kugelmass published a book on the new trend, Masked Culture, describing Halloween as an emerging gay 'high holiday.' And after a while -- the straights imitated. From the spread of disco in the 1970s -- to the habit of paying money for sparkling waters such as Perrier -- culminating in Halloween, gays have incubated and developed major cultural trends. Straights adopt, and then ungratefully forget whom they are adopting from." - Conservative columnist David Frum, writing for CNN.com

It's National Anti-Pornography Week

This is Morality In Media's annual White Ribbon Against Pornography week and they would like you to start demanding that the police enforce all those laws about folks legally purchasing the legally-made smut featuring legally consenting adults.
"The reason we have continued to promote the campaign is because people all across the country find it to be a convenient way for them to express their opposition to pornography and their support for a standard of decency in the community," explains Bob Peters, head of Morality in Media. Bob PetersEven though the Supreme Court has partially corrected the problem, one of the reasons for the proliferation of pornography is court decisions. "Another main reason why we have so much pornography in our country is because people don't complain," Peters suggests. "They don't make complaints to the police; they don't make complaints to their local or state prosecutor; they don't make complaints to the U.S. attorneys and they don't make complaints to members of Congress, to mayors, to city legislators and state legislators."
Please support Morality In Media by tying a white ribbon around your tingly parts and emailing a photo of same to Christine O'Donnell.

Nate Silver's Final Governorships Forecast

Larger interactive version here. We're certainly enjoying that dark blue in California, aren't we? Florida remains troublesome, with teabagger and Medicare fraudster Rick Scott maintaining a slight lead over Democrat Alex Sink. In Illinois state Sen. Bill Brady is in a toss-up with Gov. Pat Quinn, who had the unenviable job of taking over for Rod Blogojevich. In Minnesota former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton is holding onto a five-point lead over teabagger asshat (and Target BFF) Tom Emmer.

Nate Silver's Final House Forecast

Larger interactive version here. Silver gives the Democrats an 18% chance of holding the House majority. Blue Dog Democrats have downplayed their support of health care reform and distanced themselves from the president, a mistake in my opinion, since many consider it the crowning achievement of the Obama administration so far.

Nate Silver's Final Senate Forecast

Larger interactive version here. Silver gives the GOP a 9% chance of winning the Senate majority. Keep your eyes on West Virginia, Washington, Nevada, Colorado, and Illinois. Alaska is really a mystery, what with Murkowski's write-in campaign and the GOP backing away from its own nominee Joe Miller. Democrat Scott McAdams is only polling at 27%, but in a three-way race with the two GOP candidates splitting votes, there's a slight chance we'll see a nice surprise.

PhoboQuotable - Pastor Jim Garlow

"When these pastors would complete their sermons, they would take off their black robes -- they preached in vestments at those times - and underneath that would be the attire of military. They would pick up a musket and ask: 'Who's going to go fight with me?' And so the revolutionary armies during that time came from pastors leading the churches. It's known as the Blacked-Robed Regiment. And we need a black-robed regiment today. We need pastors who are willing to stand up. And we need persons who are in the pews to stand up with them -- a black-robed regiment of laypersons -- who's going to take a like stand." - Manhattan Declaration co-author Pastor Jim Garlow, calling on the nation's Christians to rise up against homosexuals and other equality-minded people.

For those unaware, the Manhattan Declaration calls on Americans to disobey all LGBT rights laws. Garlow and his followers just completed a 40-day period of fasting and prayers that Jeebus will see fit to smite the gay rights movement.

MICHIGAN: Assistant AG Andrew Shirvell May Be Disbarred For Anti-Gay Stalking

A complaint has been filed seeking the disbarment of Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell over his anti-gay harassment of UM student body president Chris Armstrong.
The complaint alleges Shirvell harassed and defamed Armstrong during what Gordon describes as a six-month campaign "of lies, dishonesty, heckling, hate speech and even job interference." The commission could disbar Shirvell if it investigates. "I could not stand by and let Mr. Shirvell continue his reckless, bullying behavior," Armstrong said in a statement. Shirvell already is fighting a ban from the U-M campus. And he faces a Friday disciplinary hearing in the Attorney General's Office.
Armstrong's attorney: "We just feel very strongly ... that you can't be a licensed attorney and an officer of the court and conduct yourself this way and essentially terrorize a college student."

"Since I can remember, I have felt a very strong attraction to other men and, although I can say that I have also come to feel a lot of attraction and a lot of chemistry towards women, it is men who ultimately awaken what is instinctive, the animal in me. Socially, there are so many prejudices against homosexuals that I thought nobody would understand me, that I'd be rejected, since those are the codes I heard and learned as a child. So since my adolescence, when these desires I first began to manifest themselves, I had to deal with this great conflict between my emotions and my thoughts." - Ricky Martin, in a leaked excerpt from his autobiography. WASHINGTON: Rally For Sanity Smashes All-Time Metro Saturday Ridership Record

Yesterday's Rally For Sanity broke Washington's all-time record for Metro ridership on a Saturday.
By preliminary estimates, Metro recorded 825,437 Metrorail trips on Saturday. Whether it served any of those riders very well is different question. The demand for public transit to attend the Rally To Restore Sanity and/or Fear -- hosted by Comedy Central duo Stewart and Colbert -- exceeded supply. Metro customers suffered long waits at various Metro stations throughout the city. Several even suffered injuries. Nevertheless, the new record fairly shattered the old record, set on June 8, 1991, when Washington played host to a victory celebration for U.S. troops who served in the First Gulf War. That day Metro recorded 786,358 trips. A 1997 Promise Keepers rally in the District has the third-place record, with 735,909 trips.
Of course, we'll never know how many more people were turned away from using the subway (as was my group) because the cops were freaking out about how crowded the platforms were. We ended up walking the hour or so from our hotel to the Mall and it was amazing to look down the side streets and see tens of thousands of people streaming up from all directions.

RELATED: Despite the ridership count and all the other attendance reports, the Freepers are, of course, declaring that the lamestream media are conspiring to cook the head count so that Glenn Beck's rally looks smaller in comparison.

GEORGIA: Megachurch Pastor Comes Out

The pastor of a massive Georgia church has come out, saying the recent rash of gay teen suicides made it impossible to continue living a lie.
Jim Swilley, 52, founded Rockdale County’s Church in the Now 25 years ago. His wife, Debye, was the associate pastor, and together they had four children. Swilley says he’s known that he’s gay since he was a boy, and his wife knew when they got married. Jim and Debye are now divorced, but they kept his secret for more than 21 years. Earlier this year, Swilley says, Debye told him she thought it was time he stop living a lie. Swilley says he decided she was right after reading stories about kids being harassed by antigay bullies and committing suicide.
The below news story notes that some Christian websites and blogs are condemning Swilley, calling him "sick, twisted, and a tool of Satan."

Obama to Connecticut AIDS Hecklers: Why Do You Think This Is A Useful Strategy?

The president's speech was interrupted by AIDS hecklers at a stop in Connecticut yesterday, prompting him to address them directly.
'Let me just say this,' he said, addressing the hecklers. 'You've been appearing at every rally we've been doing. 'We're funding global Aids,' he continued defensively. 'And the other [Republican] side is not. 'So I don't know why you think this is a useful strategy to take,' he finished, jabbing his finger angrily in the direction of the hecklers. The crowds boos turned to cheers as Mr Obama - who was in the state campaigning for Democrat Richard Blumenthal - spoke. 'So, what we would suggest,' he added, 'I think it would make a lot more sense for you guys to go to the folks who aren't interested in funding global Aids and shout at that rally. Because we're trying to focus on figuring out how to finance the things that you want financed.'

Then he turned to another group of hecklers on his other side, adding: 'You guys same thing.' As more chants filled the rally, he said: 'Alright, you guys have made your point, now let's go.' Fighting to regain the momentum of the rally, he held his hands up saying: 'Everybody - we're alright. 'Come on guys,' he said. He then fell silent again, watching with pursed lips as the crowd booed the hecklers once more. The President waited nearly 20 seconds for the noise to stop, then attempted again to continue with his speech.
