Colony

A new documentary about the plight of the honey bee.
An award winner at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, Colony combines exquisite cinematography with a passionate call for action.
The Seppi family has recently set up an apiary business in the lush orchards of California. With their tightly-buttoned shirts and belted pants, the God-fearing family toil many hours to ensure their bees are kept healthy and fit for the long haul around the fruit trees of the west coast. Yet the outlook for their business isn’t good: all across America bees are vanishing. The so-called Colony Collapse Disorder is emptying the nation's hives, whether because of pesticides or a virus, no one is sure.
This gorgeously shot film contemplates the tiny but powerful industry at the heart of modern farming, and how its failure could mean the collapse of food production as we know it.

WASTE OF TIME

WASTE OF TIME is a documentary film about garbage, food, fashion, suburbanization, consumer capitalism, and the search for sustainability at a time of conspicuous consumption and the prodigious, if tragic, use of natural resources. It is the sophomore effort from filmmaker Shaun Scott, features the photography and visual-stylings of Toryan Dixon, and showcases the narrative voice of Aiko Akers.
WASTE OF TIME poses distorted, manipulated, rare archival footage--from the past and present--alongside local music from USF, Speak, and THEESatisfaction. It premiers November 26th, 2010 at Healthy Times Fun Club.

Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho

A special 50th anniversary screening on a new 35mm print!
In 1960 Alfred Hitchcock was already famous as the screen's master of suspense (and perhaps the best-known film director in the world) when he unleashed on unsuspecting moviegoers and forever changed the face of cinematic horror. From its first scene, in which an unmarried couple enjoys a lunchtime tryst in a cheap hotel (hardly a common moment in a major studio film in 1960, a moment made even more scandalous by the titillating appearance of a matching black bra and slip), announced that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before.

Hitchcock's legendary, blackly comic shocker vaulted its title into the non-Freudian mainstream and forever turned comfy shower stalls into places of terror-a feat greatly aided by Bernard Herrmann infamously shrieking all-strings score and a slashing opening credits sequence designed by Saul Bass. Endlessly parodied, imitated and analyzed, Psycho still retains its terrifying power fifty years after it first stunned the world.

In 1986 Muppets master Jim Henson and creature creator Brian Froud followed their classic fantasy film The Dark Crystal with something truly bizarre and thoroughly exciting. Labyrinth is a musical fairy tale about a Goblin King (David Bowie) who kidnaps the baby brother of a young damsel (Jennifer Connelly in her first leading role) and thrusts her into an impossible universe of talking animals, mythological creatures, super-tight pants, and synchronized goblin dancing. As young adults we dreamt soooo hard of being lost in the Goblin King's world, and with this special screening The Action Pack is making that dream come true. We're taking you INTO the Labyrinth with quote-along subtitles for all of your favorite lines ("You have no power over me!") and sing-along lyrics for every single song. Plus, before the show, we'll have a sock-puppet station in lobby so that everyone can make their own little goblin frenemy.
