When last we left Viacom, we knew
CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington) called for both an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Congressional investigation into Viacom International Inc.’s hiring practices. Seems someone at
Viacom sent an email to the Hill which said they were looking for a new staffer with one big requirement: Must be a male with Republican stripes. Ok, it wasn't just someone at Viacom. It was their VP for governmental affairs.
Well, Viacom now says, never mind. That was just an email among friends. Apparently, job announcements from the VP for government relations count as just "an informal, unofficial communication sent to close friends." Aren't they in the communications business? "Must be a male" is pretty damn clear communication.
Americablog has the full response from Viacom. It's good for a yuck. This is how corporate America responds when they are BUSTED:
We appreciate hearing your concerns.
The e-mail referenced in today's Washington Post was an informal, unofficial communication sent to close friends. The official posting for this position is available online at www.viacomcareers.com. Consistent with all our hiring practices, both male and female candidates will be considered for the position without discrimination.
Viacom is proud of its record as an equal opportunity employer. We maintain strict adherence to that policy in all of our units, including our Washington Office, where almost all of the professional staff, including the head of the office, are female.
Very truly yours,
Betty Panarella
VP, Employee Relations and Development
Kudos to CREW. They are one of the only organizations in D.C. that plays hard ball. What a concept.
