FURTHER UPDATE: Bush just announced he's picked Mehlman.
UPDATE: I understand that the GOP is trying to kill this story by giving OFF-THE-RECORD assurances to the media that Mehlman isn't gay. The strange part: To date Mehlman and the GOP sources REFUSE to go on the record about this, which is downright bizarre. What possible reason is there that the incoming head of the Republican party doesn't want to publicly acknowledge that he's heterosexual? In fact, he and the party seem downright afraid of "admitting" that Mehlman is straight. When in the history of Republican politics has a straight man been mortally afraid of simply acknowledging publicly that he's straight? If Mehlman really is straight, this entire situation is downright bizarre. There's a major controversy brewing about this man, and he could end it with one public statement - but he won't. What is going on here?
--------
UPI is reporting that Bush campaign chair Ken Mehlman WILL be named as the new head of the Republican National Committee, i.e., the head of the Republican Party. Mehlman has caused
quite a stir of late by refusing to answer questions about whether he is gay or heterosexual.
Questions about the 37-years-old-and-reportedly-very-single Mehlman's sexual orientation have been swirling around Washington for years, and have recently come to a head because of the Bush campaign's and the RNC's decision to use sexual orientation as a legitimate re-election tool for the president and Republican congressional candidates. Mehlman has said publicly that he believes the gay issue is fair game in politics, and he has defended the president's decision to add anti-gay bigotry to the US Constitution.
Advocates have argued that it would be the height of hypocrisy for the Bush administration to pick a homosexual to run the Republican National Committee. In addition, a gay person could pose a risk to the party's anti-gay agenda by practicing a "deviant anti-family lifestyle" behind closed doors, and serving as a fifth column for pro-gay advocates looking to influence the RNC and its family-related policies. Whoever the new chair of the RNC, advocates say that it would be odd, to say the least, if that person were to refuse to acknowledge their heterosexuality. It would also be a slap in the face to Christian conservatives who thought the Bush administration agreed with their views on homosexuality.
Please contact the RNC and leading religious conservative organizations and demand to know why the RNC won't clarify what is going on here. Sounds to me like family values conservatives are being betrayed.
MESSAGE
with the religious right in particular, I think you should be very nice and simply inform them of what the RNC is doing, and how it looks as though conservative Christians are about to be stabbed in the back by this president. First Mary Cheney and her lover are on stage when Bush announces his acceptance after the election, and now this...
