DEMS WIN US HOUSE

Halle-fucking-lujah.

Okay, having said that, we've learned not to count our chickens. The networks are predicting the Dems have won the House, but we still need to see what happens in 2 races in Georgia, apparently, that the Dems want to be sure they've won. Though Joe just told me that we're going to win at least another ten seats, so we're beyond the margin of error here - we've got it. Read More......

GOP's Bill Bennett and JC Watts are getting angry and delusional on CNN

Watching the GOP pundits Bennett and Watts on CNN is almost funny. These guys don't know how to lose. They seem stunned and just keep making things up. They seem genuinely stunned that Santorum lost, too.

This is shaping up to be a very big night for Democrats. And, the Republicans can't accept it.

Begala and Carville look like they are having a lot of fun on CNN.

We're blogging from CNN's special election coverage

Joe and I are at Tryst cafe in Washington, DC with a slew of other bloggers, left and right, at the invitation of CNN. It's actually pretty fun - nice large crowd, though it still might be easier to be sitting in front of our TVs at home - just quieter, easier to hear the returns.

Anyway, this is a quick 45 second video I shot of the room here. If you look closely, you'll see Kevin from Wizbang, Jim from the National Review, John Amato (seated on a couch), blogchick Jacki talking to Steve from the Washington Note, the boys from ThinkProgress (but you have to squint to see them), the back of Mike Krempasky's head, Captain Ed, and possibly more.

A national election, corruption top issue

From the exit polling on issues that has been released:
The national exit polls also showed that voters had more than just local issues in mind, with 62 percent saying that national issues made the biggest difference with their votes and 33 percent citing local issues.

"They used to say that all politics was local. Not this time," said CNN political analyst Bill Schneider.

The exit polls -- by a consortium of broadcast networks and The Associated Press -- showed that 42 percent of voters called corruption an extremely important issue in their choices at the polls, followed by terrorism at 40 percent, the economy at 39 percent and the war in Iraq at 37 percent.

Wall Street wants the Dems to win

Right wing/GOP pundit Laura Ingraham tries to jam DNC voter protection line

NOTE FROM JOHN: She's toast. I want to hear from election lawyers about this. And next I want to know where her show runs and who her advertisers are. Try to shut down voter fraud hotlines the day of the election - your career is over.

Consequences. There really have to be consequences for bad behavior. Like Laura Ingraham. She should be fired. Today, like most of her GOP cohorts, Ingraham engaged in an effort to undermine voting in America.

Laura Ingraham today told her listeners to jam the DNC's voter protection line. Think Progress has the audio and the transcript:
This is what I’m thinking. Tell me if you think I’m crazy. This is what I’m thinking. I think we all need to call 1 888 DEM VOTE all at the same time.
Listen for yourself here. It's all a big joke to Laura and the GOP.

A lot of lines -- legal and otherwise -- have been crossed this year by the GOP and their allies in an effort to suppress the vote. There have to be consequences. Read More......

GOP distributing false sample ballots in Maryland

The Maryland GOP has sunk to another new low. They bussed in homeless people from out-of-state to distribute fake, misleading sample ballots in Prince Georges County. The Governor's wife was right in the thick of this latest GOP scam:
Inaccurate sample ballots describing Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and Senate candidate Michael S. Steele as Democrats were handed out to voters in at least four polling sites in Prince George's County this morning.

The ballots were handed out by people who said they arrived by buses this morning from Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Erik Markle, one of the people handing out literature for Ehrlich, who is seeking reelection, and Steele, the current lieutenant governor who is campaigning to replace retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D), said he was recruited at a homeless shelter in Philadelphia.

After a two-hour bus ride to Maryland, Markle said the workers were greeted early this morning by first lady Kendel Ehrlich, who thanked them as they were outfitted in T-shirts and hats with the logo for Ehrlich's reelection campaign. Nearly all of those recruited, Markle said, are poor and black. Workers traveled to Maryland in at least seven large buses.
The Republicans are shameless. They lie and misrepresent themselves at every opportunity. The Governor and Mrs. Ehrlich should be very proud of their role in this.

You almost run out of words for how despicable the GOP has been this year.

There have to be consequences for the bad behavior. Read More......

Heavy turnout across Virginia

We've been hearing anecdotally all day that turnout is high in Virginia. Confirmation now from AP:
Republican Sen. George Allen, bedeviled by his own mistakes and an unpopular president, battled for his political life Tuesday against Jim Webb, whose disgust with the GOP made him a Democrat.

Final independent polls in a Virginia race that could determine whether Republicans keep control of the U.S. Senate showed the two candidates were about even.

Reports from around Virginia early Tuesday indicated an extraordinarily high turnout for a midterm election, with perhaps 65 percent of registered voters expected to cast ballots, state elections officials said. That would double the midterm turnout in 2002.
Arlington's registrar is reporting what could be "record turnout for a Senate race." I have to think high turnout favors Webb. Read More......

"Huge problems" with Denver voting, Dems want extension

Computer problems delayed voting in Denver. CNN has been showing the very long lines that resulted. Democrats are asking for an extension of voting hours:
Democratic party leaders are planning to seek a two-hour extension for voting in Denver, due to massive computer problems which have created long lines, and kept many from casting their vote.

Party spokesman Brian Mason said a motion is being prepared, in response to "the huge problems in Denver this morning.

The problems began right at 7 a.m. as computer problems at the voter-check in stations bogged down, creating a bottleneck in the first hour of voting as a rush to the polls overloaded the system.

George Allen, who has a de facto affirmative action policy in his office for hiring gays, bashes gays for votes

I just watched Virginia GOP Senator George Allen on TV bashing gays in order to get votes. Allen wants to stop judges from taking away "his rights" by giving civil rights to gays. It's funny, therefore, that George Allen has had the gayest office on the Hill, and in Richmond, for years now. Gee, another "anti-gay" Republican hypocrite who says one thing about gays and does another.

Lots and lots and lots of George Allen's top Senate staff have been openly gay. Even the staff Allen hired to run the committees he's on - gay. And when George Allen was governor of Virginia, who were some of his senior staffers? Gay. I knew them.

George Allen has a de facto affirmative action policy for hiring attractive young gay men. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's more than a bit hypocritical (not to mention extremely odd) that a guy who spends so much time worrying about gays (rather than, say, Iraq?) has had such a strong penchant for hiring young gay men as his most senior staff over and over for the past decade.

I just find it a little queer. Read More......

GOP fraudulent "robo-calls" in Nebraska are actually using the Dem candidate's voice!

Throw these people in jail.

Now the Republicans are actually using Democrat Scott Kleeb's voice and calling people several times an hour in order to harass them, and tick them off against Kleeb. This has been happening across the country simultaneously. It's been happening in states where the Republican party hired a specific company that makes these kind of calls. This is a coordinated nationwide effort by the Republican party to suppress voting through fraud.

I want these people in jail. And if the laws aren't strong enough to catch them, then we strengthen the laws when we take over congress. No one should be allowed to defraud voters of their vote - not Democrats, not Republicans. Either party does this, you go to jail for a long time. It just happens that this election, all the fake calls are targeting Democrats.

Had enough?

This is from Nebraska's "The Independent" (I'm not linking because you have to register to see the content, and the registration is impossible to navigate - so they lose.)
Just because it's Scott Kleeb's prerecorded voice on the other line, doesn't mean his campaign is behind the phone call, according to his communications director.

Prerecorded telephone messages supposedly from Kleeb, a Third Congressional District candidate, have been repeatedly calling people in Central Nebraska, and Ben Lumpkin, Kleeb's communications director, is concerned about the effects.

The messages, known as robocalls, are designed to inform voters about certain candidates. However, Lumpkin said he has received numerous complaints about the prerecorded messages calling repeatedly -- as many as six times an hour....

"We've had a couple of people who said they were tired of the harassing phone calls and wanted us to stop calling," she said. Some of them said they weren't going to vote for Kleeb, or at all, as a result, she said. "It's creating a bad environment for our volunteers," she said. "The point is to depress voter turnout."

Quirk said Kleeb's campaign isn't behind the repeated calls and she worries about the robocalls' impact. "They'll probably find out who's doing this, but it won't be today or tomorrow, and by then it will be too late," she said Monday....

One of the people who had complained about the calls is Jack Sandeen, a HastingsÂ? resident who volunteered with Kleeb's campaign this summer.

Sandeen came into the Adams County Democratic Party headquarters Monday to tell Quirk about the calls and even spoke to Kleeb, who stopped by the office while in Hastings. Sandeen said he and his wife had received five calls between Sunday evening and Monday. His wife listened to one of the calls in its entirety and, since she told her husband about the call, he hung up when they got another one....

He thought it was odd they received more then one call and said the recording was of low quality, like a recording of a recording....

According to the Associated Press, in at least 53 competitive House races, the National Republican Campaign Committee had launched hundreds of thousands of robocalls, which had sparked a handful of complaints to the FCC.

FCC rules say all prerecorded messages must state clearly the identity of the business, individual or other entity that is responsible for initiating the call, and that statement must be at the beginning of the message, according to the Associated Press.

Voting problems, voter excitement, voter patience -- and getting out the vote

CNN's Ali Velshi was reporting on voting problems in Indiana. Computer problems delayed the start of voting in Delaware County, Indiana.

AP is reporting problems in Ohio and Florida. What a surprise, huh?:
Programming errors and inexperience dealing with electronic voting machines frustrated poll workers in hundreds of precincts early Tuesday, delaying voters in Indiana, Ohio and Florida and leaving some with little choice but to use paper ballots instead.
Hearing about big turnout in Northern Virginia. Got a message from a friend:
UNBELIEVABLE turnout at my precinct in Alexandria. It's 8:30 and there are at least 150 in line.
Got this email from an AMERICAblog reader in Bethesda, Maryland:
I feel sorry for the voters of Maryland. The polls opened at 7:00 am, so we got there at 6:55. Nothing happened til 7:15 when the poll workers began to process voters. There was only one computer to check in voters. It was a very, very slow process....

FBI investigating GOP voter intimidation in Virginia

This may go down as our most corrupt election yet, courtesy of the Republicans. Had enough? Vote the bums out.

And as I'm sure Joe or Rob has noted below, turnout in mid-term elections can be as low as 40% or so of registered voters. That's insane. It means you can swing an entire election just by voting. Please get to a polling place today and vote, and then call your parents and friends and have them go too. There is no excuse for losing a House race by just a few votes. And don't think it doesn't happen. Check this out from the Washington Post:
In 1994, Bush lawyer Benjamin Ginsberg represented Edward Munster in requesting a recount and new election after Munster lost to Rep. Sam Gejdenson (D-Conn.) by four votes. The state's highest court ordered a recount, but in the end Gejdenson won by 21 votes.

You had an impact - you made something happen

As we enter election day, I want to take a moment to remind you all of what you've done here. In only 10 days you gave over $100,000 to 17 congressional candidates. That money provides campaigns with not just a financial infusion, but an emotional infusion as well. It tells a campaign that their message is getting through in spite of the barrage of bull. And it helps give campaigns the confidence in their message to end the election on their terms and on a positive note.

In Colorado's 4th District, we raised nearly $33,000 alone for Angie Paccione. Your money helped more people see this last, positive ad:

In Nebraska your money helped Scott Kleeb end his campaign on a positive upbeat message.

Your money has helped great Democratic candidates talk to more people. You had a voice in this election, larger and louder than had we all simply stood by and watched instead of getting involved. For that you should be proud. Thank you. Read More......

Will your vote count today? Make sure it does

It's 2006 in America. Yet, the question just asked by Miles O'Brien on CNN was: Will your vote count today? Unfortunately, in George Bush's America, that's a serious concern.

The Republicans can't win on issues. We've already seen that they're resorting to dirty tricks. Today, voter suppression will kick in.

The Justice Department is out in force. Normally, that would be a good thing, but in under Bush, who knows:
Federal poll watchers will be in 22 states Tuesday, safeguarding against fraud or discrimination in election districts marked by tight races, large numbers of minority voters and faulty ballot machines.

Justice Department monitors and observers are being assigned to Cuyahoga County, Ohio, which has been dogged by problems with computerized touch-screen voting machines. They will be in Bergen County, N.J., a must-win prize for both candidates in the state's Senate race.

And they will watching more than a dozen counties nationwide where polls are on American Indian reservations and in big cities dominated by black voters.

In all, the Justice Department is sending an estimated 850 poll watchers to 69 cities and counties - what officials on Monday called an unprecedented number, and twice as many during the 2002 congressional midterm elections.
If you're aware of any shenanigans call the Democratic Party's voter protection team: 888-DEM-VOTE. They have a 50-state protection program in place.

Let us know, too. One of the best ways to fight any kind of voter fraud, voter intimidation or voter suppression is to publicize it. Read More......

Washington Post picks up GOP "robo calls" story

It's desperation time for the GOP. Even in the final days of the election cycle, they still can't be honest with the American public. Worse yet, they are harassing households who have sick and elderly people who may need immediate phone access in life and death situations. Obviously the GOP failed to learn their lesson from similar events in the past where they have been found guilty so this subject ought to be high on the list of investigations next year. GOP democracy in action.
Whether "robo-calls" are positive or negative, mean-spirited or humorous, thousands of Americans are sick of them, according to campaign organizations that have been fielding complaints over the past two weeks.

An Ohio woman, who did not leave her name, called The Washington Post in tears yesterday, saying she could not keep her phone line open to hospice workers caring for her terminally ill mother because of nonstop political robo-calls.

Pamela Lorenz, a retired nurse in Roseville, Calif., called her own experience "harassment as far as I'm concerned" and said, "If I were voting right now, the opponent who's doing this, he'd be off my list for throwing that much trash."
Dirty tricks is all the GOP can offer since they have botched everything else up. Read More......

In Missouri, election officials ask Sec. of State for photo ID even after law was struck down

The GOP in Missouri passed a punitive law requiring photo ID from voters. The law was designed to suppress the vote of elderly and lower income voters. Fortunately, the law was struck down. But that hasn't stopped the Republicans. Last week, the Missouri Secretary of State, Robin Carnahan, who led the opposition to the law, was asked for photo ID anyway when she went to vote. Big mistake:
Missouri's chief elections official said Monday she was asked for photo identification at the voting booth despite a court ruling striking down the requirement.

"I'm guessing this may be happening in other parts of the state," warned Secretary of State Robin Carnahan, a Democrat who had opposed Republican efforts to mandate a photo ID in Missouri.

She said that a worker at the St. Louis Election Board asked her three times to show photo ID when she went to cast an absentee ballot Friday.

Carnahan said that she tried to explain a photo ID was not necessary, but that the election worker replied that she was instructed to ask for one anyway. Carnahan said she eventually was allowed to vote without displaying a photo identification.

"To have that experience personally was very troubling," she said.
It's going to be very troubling when GOP poll workers pull the same stunt on people who don't know the law. But, they really screwed up trying to pull one over on Robin Carnahan. Big mistake.

The Republicans can't win on issues. They have to lie and cheat and steal. Read More......
