Panasonic's version went on sale days after Samsung's, with models from LG and Sony expected to follow in the summer. The industry hope is that consumers, many of whom have only just made the costly upgrade to high-definition TVs, will want to ratchet up their home entertainment options once more and shift to a telly that costs at least £1,200 for the lowest specification.
