GOP House passes campaign finance law intended to benefit Republicans and hurt Democrats

They don't even pretend to be interested in the actual issues anymore. The Republicans simply pass legislation to help themselves and help their cronies, to hell with what Americans care about. America wants real campaign finance reform, not legislation that is yet another effort to pander. These people need to be thrown out on their asses next November.
The House approved campaign finance legislation last night that would benefit Republicans by placing strict caps on contributions to nonprofit committees that spent heavily in the last election while removing limits on political parties' spending coordinated with candidates.

British police take man off of plane, suspected of terrorism after listening to the Clash (I'm not kidding)

I hope someone is paying this man a very large sum of money right about now.
British anti-terrorism detectives escorted a man from a plane after a taxi driver had earlier become suspicious when he started singing along to a track by punk band The Clash, police said Wednesday.

Detectives halted the London-bound flight at Durham Tees Valley Airport in northern England and Harraj Mann, 24, was taken off.

The taxi driver had become worried on the way to the airport because Mann had been singing along to The Clash's 1979 anthem "London Calling," which features the lyrics "Now war is declared -- and battle come down" while other lines warn of a "meltdown expected."
You can listen to "London Calling" here. This is the music I grew up with. This is ridiculous. Read More......

Al Franken eviscerates Ann Coulter

Parts I and II.

From Part I:
Ann continued: "I haven't seen so many agitated Mexicans since the World Cup Soccer Games were in L.A." As offended as the diners were, the waiters were pissed. Ann was actually dumb enough to drink her coffee afterwards.

I answered by saying that I hadn't seen so many agitated Mexicans since 1846 when James K. Polk invaded Mexico because he thought Santa Ana had weapons of mass destruction. I wasn't sure of the year, but I thought the different approaches to our "agitated Mexican" jokes might give everyone an idea of what to expect.

3rd Homeland Security employee in trouble for child sex trolling

Predator III: Michael Burks. The story came out only two months ago.
Michael Burks: My father was a police officer. I was a police officer. I work for the Department of Homeland security. I understand you guys have a job to do and I’m not trying to tell anything else other than that. I swear to God, as God as my witness, I’m wearing a St. Michael’s medal right now, okay? I was not going to do anything with her.
But the detective doesn’t seem to be buying his story.
Police officer: I am telling you I don’t believe that you didn’t intend to have sex at some point with the girl.

Burks: Sir, I swear to God.

Police officer: It would have happened, I guarantee you, it would have happened.

22 Chinese nationals sneak into US inside uninspected ship cargo - could have just as easily been Al Qaeda or a nuke

Is everyone still comfortable with the fact that the Bush administration, 4 and a half years after September 11, is still letting 95% - that's 95% folks - of containers shipped to the United States arrive UNINSPECTED.

Yes, want to get a nuke into the US? Forget the Mexican border. Just ship it legally.

Bush has known this for four and half years and done NOTHING about it. And today, by simple luck, we catch 22 Chinese nationals in a shipping container that, by chance, was selected to be examine, some day, but in the meantime the Chinese slipped out of it and were caught elsewhere.

Fortunately, the Democrats are going to fix the problem while the Republicans refuse. Two Democratic members of Congress got an amendment passed today in a House committee, and the amendment requires 100% of incoming cargo to be inspected - not the paltry 5% that George Bush and the Republicans have been comfortable checking.

The Republicans simply refuse to review or challenge anything their president does, and America's security goes down the tubes while they dawdle. Thank God the Democrats have finally found their voice, and now using their power to force the Bush administration to keep America safe.

The Republicans are the majority, and control, the US House and the US Senate. This fall, for the sake of ourselves, our families, our friends, and our children, it's time for a change. Read More......

Vanity Fair savages Scotty

Brutal. Accurate. And so fun to read:
It's this verbal haplessness that has made Scott McClellana pleasant, low-wattage, old-before-his-time young fellow, with, at 38, a wife, no children, and "two dogs and four cats"the living symbol of this White House's profound and, perhaps, mortal problem with language and meaning. McClellan himself, as though having some terrible social disability, has, standing miserably in the press briefing room every day, become a kick-me archetype. He's Piggy in Lord of the Flies: a living victim, whose reason for being is, apparently, to shoulder public ridicule and pain (or, come to think of it, he's Squealer from Animal Farm). He's the person nobody would ever choose to be.

Open thread - Joe and I got to meet Arianna last night

Joe and I got to meet Arianna Huffington Tuesday evening at a dinner downtown (the pic above is of Senator Dodd (D-CT) talking, you can't really see him). The woman is stunning in person. Svelt, tall, scary smart and the famous Arianna personality shined through right away. I know, in professional circles you're not supposed to focus on a woman's looks, but I'm sorry, there is something stunning about the lady and it's the first thing you notice (Katherine Harris doesn't hold a candle).

Also got to have a good talk with our fav Dan Froomkin from the Washington Post, who Joe and I have met before. Great guy, he was busy taking notes, expect something possibly about the evening in Froomkin's column tomorrow (or not). He introduced me to the editor of WashingtonPost.com, which considering the controversies of late, was probably a good connection to make.

Otherwise, we also got to meet some lovely folks working for Al-Arabiya TV, which was great because I've been wanting some contacts with the Arab press. Other folks there included some friends from ThinkProgress, Ana Marie Cox (the former Wonkette), some of the boys from Powerline and Captain's Quarters (right wing blogs), and then a good deal of mainstream media, including Sidney Blumenthal (dad to our friend Max, a brave reporter in his own right), the woman from the News Hour, and also John Cochrane. Also sitting at our table was the younger guy who hosts the morning show on C-Span - the dark-haired guy, you know who I mean. Nice guy.

We also had a bit of a funny. At one point we heard TIME's Margaret Carlson behind us introduce someone saying "Oh, this is Viveca Novak." I quickly did a 180 - you'll recall that Ms. Novak was the one who is good friends with Karl Rove's lawyer and gave him the heads up that Karl was in trouble.

Very interesting evening. Unfortunately I didn't get to meet Mike Luckovich, the great editorial cartoonist with the Atlanta-Journal Constitution, he was there but I lost him in the crowd. Read More......

2nd Homeland Security official in teen sex scandal - exposed himself to teenage girl in mall, formerly ran sex predator operation at Homeland Security

Again, does Bush vet anybody for any job in this administration, or is it all just buddy after buddy after buddy who gets in (Brownie), who gets the contracts (Dubia, Halliburton)? One big Harriet Miers administration.

But this one really takes the cake. The head of Operation Predator was a child sex predator? Jesus Christ people. I'd like to know how this guy got his job.
...that law enforcement agent, Frank Figueroa, used to run Operation Predator.

The victim, a 16-year-old girl, said Figueroa pulled up a leg of his shorts, exposed himself and masturbated for about 10 minutes, according to the Tampa Tribune.

NBC's Chris Matthews admits, on tape, that he "owes" Delay

You have to watch the tape to get a sense of how bad this really is. Matthews is sucking up to Delay like nobody's business. And the very end of the tape is the worst, where Matthews talks about how much he "owes" Delay.

Really Chris, what do you owe Delay and how do you plan on paying him back? And what's NBC's policy, if any, on journalist "owing" their sources who are also subjects of their own reporting? Read More......

Ohio Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt, the one who called Murtha a coward, falsified her resume repeatedly

She did it repeatedly.
"If it was one incident, I might think there was some merit in letting it go," COAST's Jim Urling said. "But we've got a very troubling, disconcerting pattern of misrepresentations here."

Schmidt's chief of staff, Barry Bennett, denied any such pattern. He told News 5 that a staffer mistakenly credited Schmidt with a second degree while creating a Web site six years ago, when Schmidt was in the Ohio House.

Bennett said Schmidt's official Web sites were corrected a year ago.

However, News 5 found a mid-June survey from the League of Women Voters that reflects two college degrees.

Bush says he wants democracy in Iraq, he just won't pay for it

John Murtha was right about Bush when he opined that just because they say something doesn't make it true. In fact, actions speak louder than words with the Bush crowd. Case in point is the democracy effort in Iraq. They're all about democracy in Iraq until someone has to pay for it:
While President Bush vows to transform Iraq into a beacon of democracy in the Middle East, his administration has been scaling back funding for the main organizations trying to carry out his vision by building democratic institutions such as political parties and civil society groups.

The administration has included limited new money for traditional democracy promotion in budget requests to Congress. Some organizations face funding cutoffs this month, while others struggle to stretch resources through the summer. The shortfall threatens projects that teach Iraqis how to create and sustain political parties, think tanks, human rights groups, independent media outlets, trade unions and other elements of democratic society.
It's going to be tough to get all those good news stories from Iraq if there aren't any institutions that can actually do good.

If you have any doubts about the callousness of the Bush team, take a cue from Freedom House where Bush gave one of his rah-rah Iraq speeches last week:
Jennifer Windsor, executive director of Freedom House, an advocacy group that hosted a Bush speech last week, called the situation "a travesty" and said she is "appalled" that more is not being done. "This is the time to show that democracy promotion is more than holding an election. If the U.S. can't see fit to fund follow-up democracy promotion at this time," then it is making a mistake, she said.
Is there anything about the Bush Iraq policy that isn't a appalling or a travesty? Read More......

GOP abstinence agenda hurting AIDS fight

The sanctimonious GOPers who don't want anyone to have sex are inhibiting the battle to prevent AIDs:
Insistence by Republican Congressional leaders that American money to fight the spread of AIDS globally be used to emphasize abstinence and fidelity is undercutting comprehensive and widely accepted aid models, the Government Accountability Office said in a report released Tuesday.

The report by the G.A.O., an investigative arm of Congress, examines the effect of a mandate from Congress that at least a third of United States money to prevent the spread of AIDS worldwide be devoted to sexual abstinence and fidelity programs.
Is there a sexual abstinence and fidelity program for the GOP? Do they practice what they preach? Read More......

Iraq neighbors planning for civil war there

What? They don't believe the White House stories about no civil war in Iraq, that Iraq is on the road to democracy? Go figure.
The four diplomats said intelligence chiefs from Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and non-Arab Turkey held a series of meetings over the past few weeks to assess the situation in Iraq and work out plans to avoid any regional backlash that may result from sectarian conflict in Iraq.

Arab nations, mostly Sunni and traditionally suspicious of Iran, are deeply concerned about what they see as Iran's growing influence in Iraq. Turkey, also a key Sunni Muslim nation, is worried about Iraq's split into sectarian and ethnic entities that will give rise to Kurdish ambitions for independence.

It's every man for himself in Iraq

Guns, guns and more guns. Bush probably doesn't see anything wrong with everyone carrying a gun since that is what he signed into law while governor of Texas. With lawlessness ruling the day due to too few troops, no planning and administration incompetence it is no wonder that people are arming themselves to the teeth in Iraq.
Iraqis are being targeted at an unprecedented rate. Wary of the ability of police and soldiers to provide protection, civilians are attempting to provide their own security, relying on neighbors and family or hiring armed guards.

In the 29-day period following the mosque attack, 955 people were murdered in Baghdad province, which includes the capital city and its outskirts, according to the U.S. military.

That's more than the number of murders in New York City, San Francisco, Miami, Atlanta, Boston and Seattle combined for all of 2004, according to the FBI. Those cities have a combined population of 10.8 million, compared with Baghdad province's 7 million.

Atlanta the new underage sex tourism hub

In the south, where the Christian right and GOP is dominant? Yes, but under age sex tourism and gambling casinos on every highway exit are surely just for those evil northerners who pass through. One problem, besides the failure to police (or apparently even recognize) this practice, is that illegal sex tourism with minors carries a heavier penalty if it happens in the developing world compared to Georgia. Why does the GOP down south condone this practice by being soft on the crime? How about some action with those so-called morals?
In a sleazy hotel room, "Brittany," then aged 16 and drugged into oblivion, waited for the men to arrive. Her pimps sent as many as 17 clients an evening through the door.

It took place in Atlanta, the buckle of the U.S. Bible Belt, where the world's busiest passenger airport provides a cheaper, more convenient and safer underage sex destination for men seeking girls as young as 10.

"Men are coming to Atlanta to have sex with a child," said LaKendra Baker, project manager for the Center to End Adolescent Sexual Exploitation (CEASE).

Feingold's got balls

[CORRECTION: I understand that Hillary DID attend last year's gay pride event in NYC. Good for her. I stand corrected.]

There are a lot of ways to pander to potential 2008 presidential voters, and I'm pretty sure embracing same-gender marriage isn't high up on the list. (Just ask John Kerry, who was against anti-gay federal constitutional amendments before he was for them in his own state.)

It's obviously a controversial issue, and while it certainly will make gay and lesbian Americans friendlier to Feingold (to put it lightly), I'm not sure it's an issue that energizes the left across the board. Sure, lots of Dems and independents will probably agree and say "that's nice," but it's not exactly a "bring the troops home" kind of message that resonates with a broader Democratic audience.

So why did Feingold say this?

Because he's either incredibly stupid, or incredibly brave. And from what I've seen of the man over the years, it's clear he ain't stupid.

This took guts. And it's the kind of "yeah, I support it, why don't you?" kind of open, honest, direct attitude that could just get Feingold elected president.

And it also puts Hillary in a fascinating pickle. Read More......

McCain goes on Jon Stewart, he's clearly worried about Falwell backlash

McCain tried to spin Stewart the line that he's speaking at Jerry Falwell's college's commencement the same way he speaks at lots of places, it doesn't imply any condoning of Falwell's message.

Well, that's cute, but McCain fails to mention that he's totally backtracked on his statement in 2000 that Jerry Falwell is "an agent of intolerance." When asked about that statement this weekend on Meet the Press, McCain said that Falwell is no longer an agent of intolerance.

So, while it's nice that McCain is going on Stewart's show to try to claim back some of his Mr. Nice Guy image with moderates and even some Dems, the fact remains that McCain is now back in bed with the far-right intolerant loons of the Republican party.

At least we won't have to be worried about that "John McCain, independent moderate maverick" image any longer. He's just like every other Republican in town - when push comes to shove, suck up to the nearest and biggest special interest you can find. Read More......
