It's now official. The Rockets will not waive Ish Smith, per Feigen. Smith will back up Kyle Lowry with AB out tonight. I look forward to watching Ish reach his potential this year and in the future, hopefully in a Rockets uniform.

Game 35 Preview: Portland Trail Blazers at Houston Rockets

Obviously a foul. You can clearly see Shane's pinkie is close to Melo's wrist. Also, his left hand is dangerously close to almost possibly touching Melo's oversized shorts that are currently not touching his legs. Furthermore, Luis Scola was hacked 11 times in the time it took you to read this. No fouls were called.

I feel like we've been here before. Recently. Oh, yeah. These two teams met three days ago. What's more, Portland also recently played the Utah Jazz twice in a span of four days. To the Blazers' everlasting credit, they won both games. The Rockets will hope to keep the Blazers from completing another half-week sweep.

We could go through all the matchups again, but that would be stupid. Point guards are relatively even, especially with Brooks trying to turn into Lowry all of a sudden. Shooting guard goes to the Rockets, small forward is even, power forward goes to them, and the center is all Blazers. Bench advantage should go to the Rockets.

Yes, the Rockets and Blazers are still similar. Yes, they're still well-coached. Yes, they're both fighting for a playoff spot and relevancy. Yes, yes, yes.

With the Rockets two games under .500, what should the Rockets do short of a trade? It's easy for us to call for a trade, but imagine for a minute that you're Rick Adelman. You can ask for a trade all day, but in the end you have to try to put the best product on the court. So what are your ideas? I expect a ton of "Play Patterson" and "Play T-Will." Fine, but give reasons if you have them.

And better yet, how do the Rockets win tonight? What must they do? How can you counter the double teams Scola gets immediately? How do you make sure the team has a chance even if the triples aren't falling as they weren't in Portland? I need answers!

Also, get over to Blazersedge. It's incredible over there. Go. There. Now.

Music In 2010: It Had Nothing To Do With Basketball

I'm a music fan, so I feel somewhat obligated to do this. Here are my top ten songs from this past year. If your favorite song is missing, chances are:

A. I didn't hear it.

B. I heard it, but I didn't think it was that great.

Just so you're aware, my taste is impeccable. Just kidding, but really, we all tend to think that way, don't we?

My Top Ten (now updated for this year. Thanks, Rivers):

Rockets Got Shelled In The Paint, But Not By Carmelo Anthony

I find myself on HoopData.com quite a bit. Now that they've begun to update box scores on the daily -- a feature filled all sorts of fun statistics -- I can't seem to ignore it.

So, this afternoon, I took a peek at the Rockets-Nuggets box score, scrolled down to the "Shot Locations" charts and came across this gem:

Picture_45_medium

The Rockets held Carmelo Anthony to 3-12 shooting at the rim. This doesn't include his 13 of 14 made free throws, meaning that Anthony likely took about 17-19 shots at the rim during the entire game. It's a positive that Houston was able to force so many misses, but it's quite unfortunate that Anthony was able to take so many trips into the paint. Hell, the Nuggets had 40 free throw attempts throughout the game -- forget Anthony: the entire team destroyed the Rockets' interior D. If you remove Anthony's paltry numbers, the Nuggets shot 16 for 25 at the rim. Pathetic.

It's not surprising that this happened. Denver prioritizes drawing fouls in the paint and Houston prioritizes fouling in the paint, since their lack of a defensive presence at center doesn't give them any choice otherwise. Still, though: nearly 60 shots were attempted at or near the rim? Sixty. Jeez.

To end on a good note, Patrick Patterson swatted the living bejeesus out one of Anthony's nine interior misses. Good for him.

Actually, I'll make one more point.

In three games without Chuck Hayes...

Patrick Patterson has 23 rebounds. Jordan Hill has 11 rebounds.

Patrick Patterson has committed one foul. Jordan Hill has committed eight fouls.

Patrick Patterson has attempted nine free throws. Jordan Hill has attempted zero free throws.

Let this serve as a recap for tonight's game. Great points about Chuck and Jordan. Kudos, Jonathan Feigen.

Game 34 Preview: Houston Rockets at Denver Nuggets

REFUND!? REFUND!? Name the movie reference. I dare you.

REFUND!? REFUND!? Name the movie reference. I dare you.

Thanks NBA. I appreciate the Rockets only having a travel day to get to Portland, while the Trail Blazers had three days off. Totally fair. And I'm sure you'll have us go to Utah the very next night.

OK, so it's Denver, but it's still in altitude, and they still got a day off. And altitude does make a difference. Hakeem Olajuwon was a well-conditioned athlete and I remember he always had trouble in the Mile High City. Again, thanks NBA. Good looking out.

The Nuggets are 19-13 and just got Carmelo Anthony back the other night. Of course, he used the night to get rid of the rust so he can be back in full form for the Rockets. Again, thems the breaks. Introducing your Houston Rockets, the unluckiest team in the NBA!

I'm not one to talk much about possible trades, so I'm going to ignore the whole Carmelo Anthony thing. This is just a game preview, so I'll be focusing solely on the game itself. A radical idea, I know, but bear with me.

Quick matchups today due to the short turnaround.

Lets do this! LEEEERROOOOOYYYY!....

Rockets Blown Out By Portland, 100-85: Ten Takeaways

About that offense. It didn't show up Sunday night. Perhaps Portland and their 95 points allowed per game had something to do with it.

Kevin Martin had one of his rare poor performances, taking 17 shots to score 15 points. Luis Scola attended the game for a little while, but mostly to turn the ball over four times. He did make five of eight shots, but um, he only took eight shots. Aaron Brooks played the role of bricklayer, going 3-10 from the field and 1-6 from range (sidenote: doesn't it seem like Brooks constantly misses his open shots, yet makes the tough, contested attempts?). He also declined to give much effort on defense against Patrick Mills, who absolutely torched him. Jordan Hill seemed disinterested after making a few buckets in the first half. In fact, we'll cut to the chase and point out that Jared Jeffries and Terrence Williams each got playing time. Eight minutes each.

Yup, this thing was done early. The only positive in the result is that the starters got an extra eight minutes of rest in preparation for the Denver Nuggets tomorrow. That's the positive.

In no particular order: ten takeaways from the 100-85 loss to the Trailblazers, Portland's twelve steals aside:
