Peter Jennings honored at Carnegie Hall

I always really liked him. Very nice article from AP's David Bauder.
A handful of homeless people were also in the hall. Jennings' widow, Kayce, was startled recently when a homeless man approached to express sympathy for her loss; Jennings had befriended him during walks in Central Park.

Jennings frequently served meals to the homeless after leaving the ABC News studio and that night's broadcast of "World News Tonight," said Mary Brosnahan Sullivan of the Coalition for the Homeless.

CNN/USA Today Poll: 81% of Americans want an independent panel to investigate Katrina, 18% want Congress to investigate

Ouch! Those are Terri Schiavo numbers, in terms of how badly the Republicans are misreading public opinion here.

Oh my God, watch this video, but especially keep an eye out for 3 minutes into the video when CNN's Jack Cafferty says the Bush White House, using one of its WMD experts to now investigate the Katrina mess, will probably conclude that there was no hurricane! Read More......

Religious right worried that John Roberts isn't a member of the Taliban

Gee, so Mr. Roberts may not believe that the Bible is the supreme law of the land. What a surprise (actually, it is a bit of a surprise, coming from a Bush court appointee).

Of course, the religious right is rumbling about Roberts' not-very-Biblical answer:
While many pro-family supporters are singing the praises of Judge Roberts' performance during the hearings last week, not everyone is joining in the song. For example, when the topic of the nominee's personal faith -- and its potential influence on his judicial decisions -- was brought to the table by California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein, Roberts said: "There is nothing in my personal views, based on faith or other sources, that would prevent me from applying the precedents of the court faithfully." He added that when it comes to judging, he looks to law books for guidance -- not to the Bible or other religious sources. (See related story)

Rob Schenck of the National Clergy Council says that while he believes Roberts has convinced most observers that he is a conservative and has a conservative judicial philosophy, he admits he was not comfortable with that response. "I am very bothered by the statement that Judge Roberts made when he said that the Bible and his faith do not factor into his judgments on the court," Schenck says.

The National Clergy Council spokesman acknowledges that Roberts may have been saying what he needed to in order to be confirmed -- but the nominee was under oath, and Schenck finds that worrisome.
That's right, and you should be worried. Because either Roberts isn't some nutjob who thinks America should become a fundamentalist religious state where the Bible is the law of the land (I can't wait for the stonings, and don't even get me started on those impure women and their periods), or John Roberts DOES believe all that crap and he perjured himself.

So, which is going to be, religious right? Is John Roberts actually NOT one of your boys, or did he commit a crime under oath (not to mention, I'd love to know if it was under oath on a Bible). Read More......

State of Tennessee closes down "ex-gay" mental facility

About time. This is a great case study for those of you in the rest of the country. Use your state government apparatus to shut them down.
The state Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities has ordered the closing of what it calls two unlicensed personal care facilities run by a Christian group that counsels gays to give up homosexuality.

The state inspected two facilities in Memphis on Aug. 19 and determined Love In Action International Inc. was providing housing, meals and personal care for mentally ill patients without a license, according to a subsequent letter to the organization from the Department of Mental Health. The department gave Love In Action until Sept. 23 to cease operation of the facilities and apply for a state license.
Particularly troubling is the part of the article that notes that, while these groups claim to be all about prayer, they also allegedly dispense drugs:
Former Love In Action client Peterson Toscano said Monday that a house manager for the program told him one of the manager's responsibilities was dispensing drugs that had been prescribed for participants.

"He told me that it was to keep people from misusing the drugs," said Toscano, who is now a writer and performer living in Hartford, Conn.

Under state regulations, facilities that dispense medication to patients require a license.
Since when does a church dispense drugs? Read More......

Reid to vote against Roberts

The Minority Leader says no:
Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid announced his opposition to Chief Justice-nominee John Roberts on Tuesday, voicing doubts about Roberts' commitment to civil rights and accusing the Bush administration of stonewalling requests for documents that might shed light on his views.

How To Talk To Creationists

From a NYT article about museums providing new training for employees bombarded with questions from aggressive creationists who question and attack every basic principle of science:
A pamphlet handed out at the training session...offers suggestions on replying to frequently raised challenges like "Is there lots of evidence against evolution?" (The answer begins, simply, "No.")

When talking to visitors about evolution, the pamphlet advises, "don't avoid using the word." Rehearse answers to frequently asked questions, because "you'll be more comfortable when you sound like you know what you're talking about."

Dr. Allmon told his audience to "be firm and clear, not defensive." The pamphlet says that if all else fails, and docents find themselves in an unpleasant confrontation, they excuse themselves by saying, "I have to go to the restroom."
The old 'I have to pee' defense! That'll stop those creationists dead in their tracks. Read More......

Iraq Deaths exceed 1900

No end in sight:
The U.S. military said Tuesday that four U.S. soldiers were killed in two separate roadside bombings near the insurgent stronghold of Ramadi, pushing the toll of American forces killed in Iraq past 1,900.

The soldiers died in two separate bomb attacks Monday during combat operations in the volatile western Iraqi city, 70 miles west of Baghdad, the military said. The victims were U.S. Army soldiers attached to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

As of Tuesday, 1,903 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,483 died as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers. The figures include five military civilians.

Have the Chinese banned AMERICAblog and Atrios

Well, that's the report I just got from a loyal AMERICAblog reader who just returned from China (actually, this is the second report I've received from someone who said we were blocked in China). Here's what reader P. had to report:
I noticed something recently that I thought you might find interesting. I just returned from almost two weeks in China on business. Since it was on business, I was in the big cities and hotels that had internet access. I had no problem with any access during my stay, except:

Of all the sites I check on a daily basis (between my various e mails, FARK, a few news sites, and four or five blogs - maybe 15 sites in all, plus whatever links I follow from those sites) I had no problem with any of them except two - AMERICAblog and Atrios. All of the others worked like a champ. Yours always resulted in a "domain cannot be found" or similar message no matter how I tried to get at it (different search engines, different browsers, etc).

Now, maybe your site and Atrios were down the entire time between September 7 and this morning. I'm guessing it is more likely that you and your blog have made it onto a list somewhere in the bowels of the People's Ministry of Apparatchiks that Ban Internet Blogs in China.

Congratulations. You are now an international celebrity. Maybe you can add '"Domain not Found" - People's Republic of China' to your header along with the comments from Rush, the FRC, and CWA.
Perhaps the Chinese hate cats and orchids.

Anybody else got any feedback on accessing us in China? I'd love a screen capture of the computer saying we can't be accessed :-)

Oh, and apparently they DON'T ban DailyKos in China. I always knew Kos was a red. Read More......

Porn is a top priority for the Bush Department of Justice.

The Bush Administration is obsessed with sex. Now, the FBI is building a porn squad:
The FBI is joining the Bush administration's War on Porn. And it's looking for a few good agents.

Early last month, the bureau's Washington Field Office began recruiting for a new anti-obscenity squad. Attached to the job posting was a July 29 Electronic Communication from FBI headquarters to all 56 field offices, describing the initiative as "one of the top priorities" of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and, by extension, of "the Director." That would be FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III.
Hey, it's not like they have anything else to do. And, this isn't about child porn or anything that's illegal. They are talking about "the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults." So all you Red State guys need to know: The Bush team wants your porn. Read More......

Another Political Hack at Homeland Security

This one will head the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency:
The Bush administration is seeking to appoint a lawyer with little immigration or customs experience to head the troubled law enforcement agency that handles those issues, prompting sharp criticism from some employee groups, immigration advocates and homeland security experts.
But, of course, the appointee, Julie Myers, is a political hack and related to some of Bush's cronies:
After working as a federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, N.Y., for two years, Myers held a variety of jobs over the past four years at the White House and at the departments of Commerce, Justice and Treasury, though none involved managing a large bureaucracy. Myers worked briefly as chief of staff to Michael Chertoff when he led the Justice Department's criminal division before he became Homeland Security secretary.

Myers also was an associate under independent counsel Kenneth W. Starr for about 16 months and has most recently served as a special assistant to President Bush handling personnel issues.

Her uncle is Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers, the departing chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. She married Chertoff's current chief of staff, John F. Wood, on Saturday.
No real qualifications, but that's no problem for the Bush Administration. Ms. Myers really inspires confidence. Nothing has changed with how the White House hires people at Homeland Security. Doesn't that make you feel safer? Read More......

Not that he reads polls or anything, but Bush wants you to know

...that he's really, really, really concerned about the latest hurricane that is coming. He's got good people, workin' hard on this so everyone can be sure that he's on top of the issue and so we can all forget that he was strumming the guitar, raising cash and riding his bike on the ranch while Katrina hit.

Nice bootlicking by Nedra Pickler of the AP on this one:
The shift in policy was a much-needed show of leadership for the president, who hasn't had many public victories in the wake of Katrina.
Ohhh, what a leader he is, our dear leader! Now what kind of leadership are we talking about here? Isn't it nice to see the MSM follow talking points so well? Read More......

Katrina: How The Sick And Elderly Were Abandoned

Is it time for the blame game yet?
The 827 people inside [one hospital] - 137 of them patients - stayed relatively calm until Wednesday, when food and water ran short and the heat reached 110 degrees. "You get a feeling of, Does anybody know we're here?" Ms. McCall said.

She was told by top officials at Universal Health Services, the company that runs the hospital, that they had rented two trucks with food, water and diesel fuel and sent them on, "but they were confiscated by federal authorities," she said. The company also hired two helicopters, but officials refused to let them fly, she said.
