September Living Liberally calendar for Oregon and SW Washington

by: nothstine

Sun Sep 05, 2010 at 21:47:20 PM PDT

What can I say: Labor Day weekend snuck up on me -- I haven't even come to terms with the end of August yet. My bad.

So, since I'm too late to promote the first-Thursday-of-the-month meeting of the Corvallis chapter of Drinking Liberally at 5pm - 7pm at Squirrels, 100 SW 2nd St., which met on September 2nd, I'll try to get ahead of the curve by pointing out that their next meeting will be on Thursday October 7th.

And for the rest of us, still living in September, here's the run-down for Drinking Liberally chapters in Oregon and SW Washington this month. (Click on the chapter's link to join their email list.)

Vancouver: Next meeting: Tuesday, September 7th.
Meetings: Second and fourth Tuesdays, 7pm, at the Back Alley Bar and Grill, 6503 E. Mill Plain Blvd. (West of Andersen, in a strip mall 1/2 block west of Safeway on the south side of Mill Plain. It's deep in the lot.)

Portland Left Side (aka: Portland Metro West): Next meeting: Wednesday, September 8th.
Meetings:
Second Wednesday of every month, 7:00pm at  Ringo's, 12300 SW Broadway St, (just east of Hall Blvd).

Portland: Next meeting: Thursday, September 9th.
Meetings: Second and fourth Thursdays of the month, at the Lucky Lab Brew Hall at 19th and NW Quimby, Thursday at 7pm.

Salem: Next meeting: Thursday, September 16th.
Meetings: Third Thursday of the month at Browns Towne Lounge, 189 Liberty St NE # 112 (Old Sportstop next to Read Opera House)

(The St. Helens chapter is on summer hiatus.)

There are over 300 DL chapters around the country; to find the one near you -- or to start one in your neighborhood--go here.)

And if you appreciate Living Liberally promoting progressive action through social interaction -- including keeping the whole Drinking Liberally network up and running -- consider sending them a little love via Tipping Liberally. Or check out becoming a regular pledge donor.

So wherever you are, join the Drinking Liberally gang for drinks and political conversation.

And remember: DL encourages everyone to drink, and vote, responsibly.

Don't forget there's still time to purchase your copy of 538 Ways to Live, Work, and Play Like a Liberal.

Oregon Gubernatorial Baselines: Kitzhaber vs. Dudley

by: Alibguy

Sat May 29, 2010 at 07:42:45 AM PDT

Hi, this is my first blog post here if this is off topic, please let me know.

Ted Kulogoshi (D) is not running for reelection as Governor. The Democrat running to replace him is John Kitzhaber (D) who is the former Governor of Oregon from 1994 to 2002. The Republican running is former basketball player Chris Dudley. Kitzhaber was a popular Governor and he was elected with 64% of the vote in 1998. A recent Rasmussen poll though showed Kitzhaber and Dudley tied. Kitzhaber should still win because Rasmussen has recently shown polls that favor Republicans. For the Arkansas Senatorial race, they found Republican John Boozmen winning against incumbent Blanche Lincoln (D) by 38 points. Other polls show Boozmen winning by 10-15 points. For Oregon, other polls show Kitzhaber with a lead. This is an anti incumbent year but Kitzhaber has not been an incumbent for eight years. He was not very popular but Oregon has a strong Democratic lean so Kitzhaber should probably pull ahead.
For Kitzhaber to win, he needs to win big margins in Portland while carrying suburban Washington and Clackamas combined. He is from Portland but Dudley is from Lake Oswego in Clackamas County. Also, Kitzhaber needs to win traditionally Democratic rural counties like Clatsop and Tillamook counties where he performed very well in 1998. He hopefully will keep down Dudley's margins in the rural eastern part of the state.

This map here is the baselines of the Gubernatorial race. This map shows how the Oregon counties will vote if the Gubernatorial race is tied. I found the results by adding the 2008 Presidential election results to the 1998 Gubernatorial election results. I then divided by two to get the results shown below.

Link for 1998 election results: http://www.uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/

Link for 2008 election results: http://www.uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/

Here is a map of the baselines: http://www.flickr.com/photos/40248407@N03/4649534339/sizes/l/

Dark Blue: Kitzhaber 60%+
Blue: Kitzhaber 50%+
Light Red: Dudley 50%+

Now here is a chart of the percentages by county. The formatting is not working but it should not be too hard to follow.

Drinking Liberally meetings in Oregon and SW Washington for May -- Plus a word from the progressive

by: nothstine

Thu May 06, 2010 at 13:37:04 PM PDT

First, a word to the sponsors of progressive infrastructure -- that would be you:

Living Liberally -- the parent organization of DL -- has changed the landscape of modern politics by building progressive communities in 350 cities around the country (and around the world). They are a real-life counter to the tea party that will be sustainable over the long-term, rather than just a Fox News-generated flash in the pan.

But these are rough financial times, and LL is facing a budget shortfall over the next six months. This is a time that will include the primary and mid-term elections, Wall Street reform and climate change legislation - all crucial reasons to keep progressives united and connected. To operate at full capacity through the midterm elections, we only need 120 members of our community to come through with $50 each -- $6000 total to meet our shortfall.

LL is joining in this fundraising effort with a vital partner in the progressive netroots, Open Left.  Open Left has been a progressive media powerhouse for the last three critical years in our movement. Just as Living Liberally has changed the landscape of modern politics by building a network of aggressive activists, Open Left has done so through efforts like getting every 2008 Senate Democratic challenger to come out in support of net neutrality.

With both organizations facing a budget shortfall in the upcoming year, we've partnered to ask that you support the effort to build a progressive counterpoint to the tea parties and Fox News.

Contribute now to support progressive infrastructure like Drinking Liberally and Open Left.

Now, here's the run-down for Drinking Liberally chapters in Oregon and SW Washington this month, starting with Corvallis, which meets tonight. (Click on the chapter's link to join their email list.)

Guess Title of Portland Police Kids' Book (Really!)

by: torridjoe

Wed May 05, 2010 at 13:59:16 PM PDT

I had fun with this yesterday: word came over the Twitter wires that Portland's Police Bureau will be releasing a children's book today, and while they spoil things and give the actual name in the press release, I thought it would be easy to come up with some alternate titles. Some are better than others, but that's comedy for you. And maybe there's still a chance one of these can get used--there's always the paperback version! See if any of these ring true with you:

  • The Boy Who Cried Wolf--And Was Tased For His Impudence!
  • The Nightstick That Could
  • Juvy For Dick, Caught With Mary Jane
  • Coldcocking Miss Daisy's Driver
  • Goodnight Consciousness
  • The Big Golden Book of Hobo Beatdowns
  • The Barelysane Bears
  • Hans On the Car, Gretel
  • To Kill a Mockingbird--or Whatever Else Fucking Sasses Me
  • The Child's Big Book of MAX Exclusion Citations
  • How Misty of Chincoteague Became Your School Glue Due to Mounted Patrol Budget Cuts
  • Portland Police -- R Scarry (read that one out loud)
  • Johnny Has Two Daddies (Who Both Punch Hippies For a Living)
  • The Chief With the Chocolate Cock
  • Nancy Drew Her CellPhone, But it Looked Like a Gun So I had to Shoot Her
  • Black Beauty (You Look Mighty Suspicious)
  • Shitty, Shitty Bang-Bang
  • Hop on Pop, Until He Stops Resisting
  • Where the Wild Things Work
  • The Breakfast Club (is What We Use To Roust the Homeless in the Mornings)
  • If I Ran the Circus (You Bitches Wouldn't Have Citizen Oversight)
  • Because a Jacked-up, Power-hungry Cop is a Person in Your Neighborhood
  • Curious George Should Have Known Better Than To Ask About His Rights
  • You Show Me Yours (and I Won't Ticket You)
  • Born Free--Just Don't Ask About After That

Trib Puts Strange, Potentially Biasing Head on Synthetic THC Story

by: torridjoe

Fri Apr 23, 2010 at 00:19:24 AM PDT

Hopefully it will be printed either online or next week in the print version, but this was my letter to the editor in response to the 2nd published story in the Portland Tribune's "broken medical marijuana system" series. I have comments about the first one too, but I'll address them out of order and note my comments on this latest:

-----------------

Like most of the commenters to the online version, I found the use of the headline "Legal pot causing overdoses" in your story on synthetic THC an extremely odd choice that is easily misunderstood at best, bluntly manipulated at worst.  Their further (accurate) complaints over the choice to publish it within a series on the "broken medical marijuana system" deserve a response:  what does the sale of  spiked incense have to do with medical marijuana?

Both the headline and the series reference have since been changed, with 'pot' now in quotes. Kudos for taking reader feedback to heart, but I think it's fair to ask how it happened in the first place. And it’s disappointing that a story that actually deserves attention was encapsulated with such a misleading tag.

If there WERE, theoretically, an intent to cast indirect aspersions on the cannabis legalization initiative now pending in Oregon, that would be doubly unfortunate--because legal cannabis would almost certainly preclude the market for synthetic THC. Your article cites K2 users saying they want the same high, but legally. Pot is really a reverse gateway drug, drawing kids away from something that might really be harmful that you can OD on--whereas the next fatal overdose from pot will be the first.  With recent studies showing a majority of Western US adults favoring outright legalization, maybe it’s time to take a good, serious look finally.
