Here’s a radical idea…
You can fight hunger. Mother Teresa said “If you can’t feed 100 people, start by feeding just one.” If you know a family or individual that is struggling, work to meet those needs first. Each community is equipped to meet the needs within it, and people will often tell their friends or family about a problem before they will go to the local nonprofit for help. Be generous with the food in your refrigerator, and then watch the doors open to become more active in the fight against hunger.
Lately, we’ve been targeting hunger on a case-by-case basis. For example, thanks to your support, we bought a hungry teenager a subway sandwich and our friends helped us bless a shelter (that ran out of meat for dinner) with 130 pounds of chicken. These instances involved only simple conversations and trips to the restaurant or grocer. Once you begin looking for hunger, you’ll find it. What you do next will make all the difference.
Globally, more than 15,000 children die each day from hunger. We hear this statistic and think that it could never happen in our own back yard. Think again. Hunger is present even in the wealthiest nation in the world. In America, 1 in every 6 school children goes home to a house without food.
Food Banks and Food Pantries across the United States are joining forces with big corporations and individuals to bring food to these children and to the homes they live in. Don’t underestimate the power of a good idea! Start locally, think globally. 1 person at a time.
The Project arrives in a new state each week, and we are always implementing different programs to encourage a community response to poverty and hunger. We initially began with a basic neighborhood food drive, and today organizations all over the country are implementing this idea in their efforts to collect necessary groceries and supplemental food items. If you would like information on how to conduct a food drive in your community, send us an email at info@project-5050.com.
