I was behind a truck plastered with NRA stickers at the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru today. I remember thinking about how interesting it was that gun lovers feel compelled to advertise so passionately before telling myself that, really, anyone with a heavy agenda is going to be rather vehement with the bumper décor.
But then I got thinking about a recent story out of Logansport, Indiana about a 14-year-old girl shot in the head by her sister during a reenactment of CSI, and it got me contemplating many things, notably the ease with which children can get their hands on weapons and the glorification of guns …

Cute, huh? And by “cute,” I mean, “not at all cute.” Though, I’ll be honest: when the ad first began, and the hot chick in the pool took up the majority of the screen, I thought, “Hey. This actually isn’t that bad. It’s Phoebe Cates circa Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She’s a cute girl with a regular face, not-at-all supermodelish, and they haven’t even showed her tits. I guess this isn’t so horrible, right?” But then I was whacked over the head with the Erect Penis of Sexually-Based Men’s Advertising, and not only was I “assaulted” (I use that term lightly; the actress in the commercial was actually quite cute and had a lovely, healthy-looking body) with a full-frontal of the girl erotically climbing out of the pool, it was taken even further: she began to take her top off. That’s where I kind of lost interest in the ad, and chalked it up to a bunch of slackers sitting around a board table, picking out the most cliche things they could find to appeal to men: hot girl, pool, wetness, red bikini, near-miss nudity, just because they were too worried about whether or not the chick delivering Pizza Hut that day would be as hot as the one who’d delivered from Papa John’s the prior week.
I guess we shouldn’t be so surprised, however – JC Penney has long been touted the man’s plaything store (oh, wait, no – that’s Sears), and KMart, the lower end of the lower end department stores, has always catered to women and their Martha Stewart-loving ways, you know? But JC Penney? Nah. Nope. I’ve got no excuse other than they were sick of being overlooked and decided to cater to the man’s side of the house rather than split the difference and call it a day. On the whole, however, I suppose I’m not all that surprised: the “too pretty for homework” shirt, once featured here on Zelda Lily, came from Penney’s. That explains a whole lot, now that I think about it.

There is no question that Chelsea Clinton is a poised, articulate, admirable young woman. Somehow, against all odds when you consider other children that grew up in the White House glow, she has managed to avoid tabloid drama and pretty much any sort of negative press whatsoever.
And while her parents, former United States President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, unquestionably own a great deal of the credit, Chelsea herself …

Ah, punishment, a word that brings up anecdotes, questions, and discussions on equity. It also, of course, leads to discussions on what might have caused bad behavior in the first place, as evidenced by a recent story out of Plaistow, New Hampshire, where Dirty Dancing became more than a film title and the entire student body was penalized for the actions of a few.
From WMUR:
A New Hampshire high school has canceled two dances over concerns that student dance moves are becoming too sexually suggestive.
Officials at Timberlane Regional High School in Plaistow say the spirit week and homecoming dances have been canceled. Principal Donald Woodworth tells The Eagle-Tribune that last year chaperones become uncomfortable when students started “grinding,” a form of dirty dancing…

Please. I mean, come on, seriously, please. Even though Gisele is a Victoria’s Secret model, she’s done a lot of stuff off the runway that she deserves credit for, but these spots for Hope Lingerie are just atrocious. Oh, what? There’s another one? Another two? OK, let’s check those out, also:
And ….:
This, ladies and gentlemen, half of one of the richest celebrity couples in America. And for what? Parading around in panties and a bra? She’s gorgeous and she’s talented, but “Sorry I busted your credit card, tee hee” and “Sorry I wrecked your car but it’s OK because I’m going to distract your apparently-stupid man-rationale with my tits and ass. That’s going to make it all better, and no problems will ever arise in the future as long as I’m always as hot as I am right now. In fact, just because I’m so hot, I may never actually have to take responsibility or be accountable for any mistake I might make, and in the long run, it’s going to make me manipulative and self-centered.” Is that what we’re aiming for? I know that these ads are supposed to be lighthearted and “fun,” and maybe I’m taking them way too seriously this early on a Saturday morning, but come on.
Something seems kind of … off about all of that, does it not?

If you happen to follow Evil Beet Gossip as well as Zelda Lily (and to those of you who do, kudos to you for taking it all with a grain of salt, ha!), you probably noticed an interesting conversation sparked by one of the recent posts concerning actress Sarah Jessica Parker and some comments she made about her husband, Matthew Broderick. When interviewed about Broderick and their marriage, Sarah had this to say:
“I think that’s healthy and I think it’s realistic. Some people have it down to 20 minutes a week. Other unfortunate people have it down to 20 minutes per hour.”
What Sarah’s referring to is the fact that she, herself, “hates” her husband for twenty minutes a day, and claims that those figures are actually pretty good in comparison to … well, I don’t know who, exactly, she’s comparing herself to, but if what she says is true, I’d hate to meet those who “hate” their spouses for larger blocks of time on a higher frequency.
What’s also interesting is that many of the commenters – some quite different from those we have here on Zelda Lily – supported Sarah’s comments and claimed that they, too, “hate” their partners for significant periods of time weekly or daily. To me, this came …

Somehow, the outrage I expected over the poor taste vis a vis the gun target looming over U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords’ district in light of the life-threatening injuries she received during a shooting never reached the heights I expected. I mean, people shook their heads in disgust, yeah, but there was no real freak out.
Which is why I’ve been hesitant to get into the most recent insensitive action by Arizona’s Republicans.
Look, I’m not a hater of the right-wing, per se. I’m not, like, “You’re a Republican? Clearly you’re an uncaring moron.”
It’s just that, as …
