Stop the Machine! Create a New World!
"This is a gathering of people who support peace and social, economic and environmental justice. Our intention is to stay in Washington, D.C. as a unified presence. We will use ongoing actions of nonviolent resistance to disrupt the forces that corrupt our political process and undermine our rights and human needs. We will demand changes that shift power away from concentrated corporate capital and free us to create solutions that lead to a just and sustainable future."

The BLS Jobs Report Covering September 2011: 30 Million Disemployed
The Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report for September is out. On the surface, it is a mixed report. 103,000 jobs (Establishment survey) were created in September. The private sector created 137,000 jobs with 45,000 of these coming from telecommunication workers returning from strike. Government lost 34,000 jobs in all with local government losing 35,000. Additionally, totals for the two previous months were increased by 99,000. Yet despite this, the U-3 unemployment rate (Household survey) remained unchanged at 9.1%. Beneath the surface, things are, however, getting steadily worse.
To see what is really going on, as usual, we need to look more deeply into the numbers.

Hauya heydeana
A partial mystery plant, mainly because I haven't been able to find out much about this beauty. It's growing here in Zone 10, in a botanical garden that specializes in plants that live in mild climates (S. Africa, California, Mediterranean, New Zealand, etc.), so I'm sure the name is correct, because it was labeled. But none of my garden books have any information and there's almost nothing about it online.

Gawker #OccupyWallStreet live blog
Different flavor from the Guardian, the Daily News, or FDL. Really good. Here's a helpful tip:
March organizer came by telling us there were "agitators looking to start stuff" and to not engage. "Look at their boots," he said. "They'll look like cop boots."
Readers, true? And this is very interesting:
Looks like we've got the D's attention
Harry Reid uses the nuclear option (in October 2011, not January 2009, like the human shit-stain he is).
Sacramento Occupation Underway
More essential reading from Jack Crow
We have famous and powerful people trying to de-anonymize and take possession of a self-organized, decentralized, anti-political, celebrity-free and uniquely clever set of affiliated groups whose main tactic - and it's a shiny one - is to re-create a social commons as a means of producing new means.
"A means of producing new means." I like that. And the means justify the means.
Just as, heh heh, The Meanies can't justify The Meanies!

"Isocratic"
Riverdaughter dug up this great poster; she's sure if it's from an Occupation, but says it sounds right:
Oh, "isocratic."
Occupy Wall Street and the great unmasking
Here was the scene last night at Occupy Wall Street (OWS):
I think this might end up being the signature event of the movement, because it will represent the moment when the powers that be dropped the pretense and gave us all an unvarnished look at what they are really willing to do. The arrests over the first weekend might have been sold as just breaking up another protest. The much larger arrests last weekend could have been spun as a public safety issue, or of maintaining access to public infrastructure.

FINALLY, Real Grassroots Populism vs. Surreal Tea Party Astroturf
As I read about, witness and participate in the Wall Street Occupation (now a national phenomenon), I can’t help thinking back to the powerful image of Michael Moore at the end of “Capitalism: A Love Story” preposterously yet earnestly attempting to enwrap Wall Street with yellow crime scene tape.
I am also pleasantly haunted these days by the Margaret Mead quotation: “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
God bless every one of them who has tenaciously hung on down at Liberty Plaza and is still hanging on. It is at long last renewing and activating demoralized liberal hearts across America.
#OccupyWallStreet last night: Members of Media team arrested
Obama's Star Chamber "the very definition of tyrannny"
American [citizen] militants like Anwar al-Awlaki are placed on a kill or capture list by a secretive panel of senior government officials, which then informs the president of its decisions, according to officials.
There is no public record of the operations or decisions of the panel, which is a subset of the White House's National Security Council, several current and former officials said. Neither is there any law establishing its existence or setting out the rules by which it is supposed to operate. ...
The role of the president in ordering or ratifying a decision to target a citizen is fuzzy. White House spokesman Tommy Vietor declined to discuss anything about the process.
No doubt. James Madison isn't just rolling in his grave; he's pounding on the coffin lid, screaming in agony to be released. Federalist 47:

Cucurbita maxima or Cucurbita moschata
Kabocha squash or Japanese pumpkin
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the pumpkin in half. This is probably the hardest part of the entire process, because the pumpkin's skin is very tough. I use the biggest, heaviest knife and rock it back and forth while pushing downward. Scoop out the seeds, place both halves cut side down in a baking dish and add about 1" or so of water. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, or until the flesh is soft enough to remove easily.
Occupy Austin update
For several days I have been meaning to update you on what's happening in Austin, TX. Between RL and pre-event GA activities I've just been too damm busy.
Tomorrow Today is the big day for Occupy Austin. Starting at 10am the 99% is occupying the City Hall block, with a General Assembly planned for 3pm CST. The Assembly will be live streamed at a link you can find on the OA web site. The AFL-CIO is showing up in support. Most people attending seem to be under 30, but the number from all walks of life in terms of age, gender, class, and vocation has grown with every GA.
Tweet of the evening
Awesome.
So, did the DHS grope anybody at #OccupyWallStreet?
Fuck Steve Jobs...
No Willed endowments for the Poor, the Middle or Working Class, No nothing for anyone "down here," nothing for the Arts?
Jobs’s net worth was at least $6.7 billion as of Sept. 6, according to Bloomberg estimates.
Fuck him. Just another Rich piece of shit Technocrat out for his own.
I hope his family has some scruples and some care.
I suspect that we'll see his family on FOX News whining about Taxes on "Jobs Creators" being unfair before too long.
Yes-- pun intended, but Steve Jobs took too many Liberals for a hard ride in his black turtleneck.
"All walks of life" in Zucotti Park
This is absolutely crucial for success. And kudos to RD for reporting:
If the media tells you that this us just a bunch of noob students, don’t believe them. All ages have been pretty well represented here. I’ve seen families with babies and octogenarians. About half the crowd is middle aged.
The park is cheering like crazy.
Excellent, just excellent.
