Lara Logan’s Attack Inspires Other Women Journalists to Come Forward

Lauren Wolfe, a journalist and the director of a group called Women Under Seige writes about how the sexual assault of CBS News’s Lara Logan last February while covering the aftermath of the Egyptian revolution, has inspired more women journalists to come forward to report their own abuses.

Jineth Bedoya, a Colombian journalist who was kidnapped, tortured, and gang-raped 11 years ago while reporting a story on arms trafficking may soon see justice for the crimes against her. The men who attacked her told her to “pay attention” as they tortured her. “We are sending a message to the press in Colombia.”

Logan echoes that sentiment.

“My attack was retribution against the free press in general and the flow of information — it was meant to discredit the revolution,” Logan tells Wolfe. “It had a much bigger purpose to it.”

Logan, opened up about the attack on “60 Minutes” in May. Read more over at The Atlantic.

Michael Moore tells Reporter: ‘You’re Just Punk Media’

TVSpy reports on Michael Moore‘s stop at Occupy Denver and his interaction with a local reporter for the CBS station there.

“You’re just punk media, is all you are. You lie. You lie to people,” said the “Countdown with Keith Olbermanncontributor to KCNC reporter Evrod Cassimy.

Ahead of ‘Where in the World’ Kickoff, Matt Lauer Shares Travel Tips with David Letterman

Monday marks the return of “Where in the World is Matt Lauer?,” which the “Today” show has resurrected after a three-year hiatus for November sweeps.  Lauer gave viewers a clue to his first destination on the show this morning: “It conjures up thoughts of a child’s worst fright, but there are no people to scare in this skier’s delight.” The “Today” show anchor also stopped by CBS’ “The Late Show” last night to share some travel tips with David Letterman. (Among them: “Get drunk before your flight, airplane booze is expensive,” and “Honeymooning with Kim Kardashian? Get refundable tickets.”) Watch:

‘Early Show’ Changes Outside, and In

After months of meetings, the evolving “Early Show” evolved even further this morning as staffers are learning about changes to the internal structure of the show — producers, writers, bookers, production assistants, etc.

TVNewser has learned some positions are being eliminated, others are being added but that the head count will not be reduced.

Of the 100+ on staff, the reorganization “affects a small number of employees,” an insider says. Affected staffers are being encouraged to apply for other jobs at the  network. In recent weeks, the “Early Show” has brought on and promoted senior staffers and is building a new newsroom and studio.

Herman Cain Supporters Target Media in ‘High Tech Lynching’ Ad

The superPAC “9-9-9 Fund” which supports Herman Cain‘s run for the White House has a new ad which rips the media — echoing the Clarence Thomas Supreme Court confirmation hearing 20 years ago — over the coverage of the sexual harassment accusations against Cain. CNN reports a shorter version of the video will run as a paid commercial on Iowa TV stations next week. The ad includes clips of support from Fox Business Network and clips from detractors on MSNBC and CNN. And while the ad directs its ire at the “liberal” media, Cain himself has pointed the finger at the campaign of his GOP rival Rick Perry for revealing the decades-old charges.

HLN Finally Launches a Website To Call Its Own

HLN’s web presence has long been relegated to a subsection of CNN.com. That in and of itself is not a bad thing, as CNN has one of the strongest digital presences of any news organization. But as the focus of coverage by CNN and HLN have diverged, executives at the company decided that CNN’s sister channel deserved a website to call its own.

Last week, HLN quietly launched HLNtv.com. Scot Safon, the executive VP in charge of HLN, says that the has been in the works for about a year, and is still in “beta.”

“It is like a Broadway show, it is in previews right now,” Safon told TVNewser, explaining that while the look is about right, the site as a whole is still a work in progress. “Where the site is three weeks from now is probably more reflective of what It ultimately will be.”

CNN.com will continue to serve as the publisher of HLNtv.com, though HLN will have editorial control of the site. In August, HLN laid off a number of employees as it changed its editorial structure to more closely align TV and digital production. That new structure results in a web presence that shares a voice with the TV programs, Safon says.
