New Hampshire Newspaper To Make Endorsement In GOP Race On Sunday

CNN reports:

With a little more than six weeks until the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire, the state's highly influential newspaper will make its much-awaited endorsement on Sunday.

The Union Leader, known for its conservative editorial board, made the announcement via Twitter on Friday. An endorsement from the paper would be a major coup for any candidate.

The timing of the endorsement might come as a surprise to Herman Cain's campaign, as the Georgia businessman is set to meet with the editorial board next week.

Maggie Daley, Wife Of Former Chicago Mayor, Dies At Age 68

Reuters reports:

Maggie Daley, the wife of former Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and a driving force for the arts and education in the city, died on Thursday, current Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. She was 68.

Daley was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2002 but continued to make public appearances and downplayed her illness despite numerous trips to the hospital.

Some political observers attributed the emotional drain of her illness in part to her husband's retirement this year after a city record 22 years in office.

"Chicago has lost a warm and gracious First Lady who contributed immeasurably to our city. While Mayor Daley served as the head of this city, Maggie was its heart," Emanuel, President Barack Obama's former chief of staff who won election to succeed Daley, said in a statement.

White House Urges Egyptian Military To Cede Control Of Government

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney released the following statement Friday on the situation in Egypt:

Since the start of the Arab Spring, the United States has spoken out for a set of core principles that have guided our response to events, including opposition to the use of violence and repression, defense of universal rights including the freedom of peaceful assembly, and support for political and economic reform that meets the legitimate aspirations of ordinary people throughout the region.

In Egypt over the past several days, we have seen protesters demand the realization of these principles. We have condemned the excessive use of force against them and called for restraint on all sides. We deeply regret the loss of life, and urge the Egyptian authorities to implement an independent investigation into the circumstances of those deaths. But the situation Egypt faces requires a more fundamental solution, devised by Egyptians, which is consistent with universal principles.

The United States strongly believes that the new Egyptian government must be empowered with real authority immediately. We believe that Egypt’s transition to democracy must continue, with elections proceeding expeditiously, and all necessary measures taken to ensure security and prevent intimidation. Most importantly, we believe that the full transfer of power to a civilian government must take place in a just and inclusive manner that responds to the legitimate aspirations of the Egyptian people, as soon as possible.

Egypt has overcome challenges before and will do so again. The United States will continue to stand with the Egyptian people as they build a democracy worthy of Egypt’s great history.
