Design Director: NY or SF

Salon Media Group, Inc. (Salon.com) is hiring a Design Director for its New York or San Francisco office.

As Design Director at Salon Media Group, you will oversee the daily look, information architecture and user experience across all properties: Salon, mobile Salon, newsletters, The Grid, Open Salon, and 3rd-party channels like Flipboard — as well as UX within the CMS. It’s your job to develop and maintain standards for all UI/UX and branding, and create consistent and compelling web products and collateral. You must be able to work seamlessly with editorial, sales and business development, collaborating on everything from special editorial projects to ads and sales materials, and to collaborate with the tech team to make all new user-facing development live up to Salon’s design template and your vision. You will also supervise our small art-desk team — managing people, resources and processes where daily story art is concerned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3-5 years of high-level UI/UX/IA experience
  • Have conceived and shipped significant websites and web apps
  • Experience composing and enforcing design standards
  • Previous experience as manager or team lead and as liaison between departments
  • Ability to manage priorities and expectations in a high-energy environment
  • Direct experience in online media, preferably a daily news environment
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills

Front End Developer: San Francisco

Salon.com, a publicly-traded online news and social networking company headquartered in San Francisco, is currently looking for a talented, motivated individual who is passionate about independent news media, to join the technical engineering team as a Front End/UI Developer. This is a role which demands excellent communication skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration with non-technical product owners.

Responsibilities:

  • Implement and maintain site look and feel
  • Optimize Javascript and CSS to enhance functionality and page performance
  • Collaborate with our Product Managers on design ideas
  • PHP template design and development
  • Produce quality code

Qualifications:

  • Advanced HTML/CSS/DOM experience, with CSS3 and HTML5 familiarity
  • Mobile design and development familiarity a plus
  • Experience with WordPress and PHP/Zend
  • Experience with JavaScript, AJAX, and JSON. Functional methodology experience a plus
  • Experience with jQuery or similar libraries (dojo, YUI, prototype, etc)
  • Extensive browser experience to ensure consistent rendering across platforms
  • Experience running user tests and reporting/organizing/presenting data from tests
  • Background working on other magazine style on-line media sites, or group blogging sites with shared access controlled CMS
  • Familiarity with mySQL
  • Linux/Unix expertise is essential
  • Experience with version control systems such as Subversion, Git
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong collaborative skills and flexibility in fulfilling multiple roles
  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science or related; or equivalent work experience
  • Strong interest in Journalism and Media

PHP/WordPress Developer: San Francisco

Salon Media Group (Salon.com), a publicly-traded online news company headquartered in San Francisco, is currently looking for a talented, motivated individual to join the technical engineering team. This is a role which demands excellent communication skills, as well as the demonstrated ability to work in close collaboration with project managers and non-technical product owners.

Requirements:

  • 3-5 years hands-on experience with object oriented PHP, using memcache and APC in high volume traffic environments (1M+ daily page views)
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience with WordPress, using the API, developing plugins, developing themes and optimizing for high performance environments
  • 3-5 years hands-on experience using a relational database, with demonstrated experience using MySQL 5.1 or later
  • Strong Javascript skills, preferably using JQuery
  • Experience using Subversion/Trac or similar version control software. Familiarity with Git preferred

Looking for:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated desire to clearly document code and to communicate technical requirements on a non-technical level
  • Background working on other online media sites or group blogging sites with shared access controlled CMS
  • Some previous work in at least one of the following: Human Interface Design, QA, multimedia development with strong emphasis on video, or contextual/semantic search algorithms
  • A Software Engineering degree or equivalent work experience

Editorial Internships @ Salon

Interns are an important part of Salon’s daily editorial operations. They work closely with Salon staff to research, report, write and produce our news and culture coverage. They also take part in editorial meetings and otherwise learn about the day-to-day workings of an award-winning online news and entertainment site.
