Election Day Is Over. What's Next?

Election activities don't end on election night. Learn more about canvassing and certifying elections, recounts and military and overseas ballots.  In fact, the outcome of the election is not official until the completion of the canvass of votes and certification of results, which sometimes may be several weeks after Election Day. The purpose of the canvass is to account for every ballot cast and to ensure that each valid vote is included in the official results.

Remember, post election procedures vary, so be sure to contact your state for more information. Election officials provide ways for voters to check the status of their provisional ballots and some even offer ways to find out the status of absentee ballots. In addition, many election officials deliver post election updates on their social media sites.
