Maryland Republicans Found Guilty Of Attempting To Suppress Black Vote

Paul Schurick, a former aide to Republican governor Bob Ehrlich has been found guilty on all four charges that he attempted to suppress the black vote in Maryland in 2010. As WBAL reported, “Schurick was a loyal lieutenant to Ehrlich — working on all three Ehrlich campaigns for governor — and serving as communications director for the Ehrlich administration.”

Schurick sent out a voice mail targeted to black Democrats that said the election had already been decided and that they should stay at home.

This is what Republicans do all over the country. Luckily here in Maryland, they got caught in the act.

    Has the New Hampshire phone-jamming case finally come to a quiet end?

    Federal prosecutors have dropped their case against former regional NRSC official James Tobin in connection with a GOP plot to jam the phone lines of the New Hampshire Democratic party on Election Day 2002, reports the Associated Press.

    Tobin had been acquitted of involvement in the plot — for which two GOP consultants have served jail time — but was being tried on new charges of lying to investigators. A court dismissed those charges, and last week an appeals court rejected prosecutors’ appeal.

    Almost from the start, there has been evidence of White House involvement in the scheme. Phone records show Tobin made 24 calls to the office of Ken Mehlman, then the White House’s political director, around Election Day 2002, and the RNC has spent hundreds of thousands on Tobin’s defense. Mehlman has denied that any of the calls concerned the scheme.

    And New Hampshire Democratic congressman Paul Hodes doesn’t view the matter as closed. “New Hampshire’s citizens deserve a full airing of what transpired in 2002,” said Hodes said in statement. “Granite Staters deserve fair elections and hopefully this case will serve as a warning to those who would seek to tamper with New Hampshire’s electoral process.”

    Two other people — the head of the New Hampshire GOP and a Republican consultant — have served jail time for their roles in the phone jamming, which may have played a role in John Sununu’s defeat of Jeanne Shaheen in the U.S. Senate race that year.

    Phone records released in those cases show that Tobin, at the time a New-England-based staffer for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, made two dozen calls to the office of Mehlman, then-White House political director, within a three-day period around Election Day 2002. Mehlman has said none of the calls involved the phone-jamming incident.

    Liberals clearly believe that minorities, the poor and the elderly are just too lazy and/or too stupid to make the effort needed obtain a FREE (if you can’t afford it) ID card from their state to take with them to a polling booth. Apparently, minorities, the poor and the elderly never ever cash a check, use a credit or debit card, buy alcohol or cigarettes, board an airplane, visit a Federal building, etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum. So why should they be required to obtain a photo ID just to vote? Sound positively evil, doesn’t it?

    He rejected any notion of politics influencing Justice’s decisions on the new laws.

    Oh, of course not. Why, the Obama administration would NEVER consider allowing politics to influence any of their decisions or those of agencies under their control. Well, maybe except for the GM & Chrysler bailouts, Operation Fast & Furious/Demand Letter 3, Boeing’s 787 plant in South Carolina, Solyndra, Solazyme, LightSquared (and likely many, many, many more to come in 2012).

    Swept up in the craze of preventing widespread voter fraud that doesn’t actually exist, Tennessee Republicans passed a voter identification law this year that they claimed would put an end to fraud and ensure fair elections. Like similar laws in other states, Tennessee’s version has come under scrutiny from voting rights advocates, civil rights groups like the NAACP and ACLU, and even Democratic senators, who oppose the laws because they will disenfranchise poor, elderly, and minority voters who are less likely to have photo IDs.

    The state now has evidence that that will be the case. Dorothy Cooper, a 96-year-old Chattanooga resident who says she has voted in every election but one since she became eligible to vote, wanted to ensure she’d have the necessary ID to vote in next year’s elections, when Tennessee’s law goes into effect. But when she went to apply for the ID, she was denied, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reports:

    That morning, Cooper slipped a rent receipt, a copy of her lease, her voter registration card and her birth certificate into a Manila envelope. Typewritten on the birth certificate was her maiden name, Dorothy Alexander.

    “But I didn’t have my marriage certificate,” Cooper said Tuesday afternoon, and that was the reason the clerk said she was denied a free voter ID at the Cherokee Boulevard Driver Service Center.

    “I don’t know what difference it makes,” Cooper said.

    Cooper doesn’t have a driver’s license — she never learned to drive — and has never needed identification to vote, and her lack of a valid marriage license is likely due to the fact that she’s outlived two husbands. Under the Tennessee law, Cooper will still be able to vote via absentee ballot, which does not require photo ID. But standing outside her normal voting precinct, Cooper told the Times Free Press she will miss going there to vote. “We always come here to vote,” Cooper said. “The people who run the polls know everybody here.”

    Got any numbers of this “voter fraud”? Or is this just another made up problem, like the War on Christmas, in order not to have to deal with the reality that a majority of the country voted for a black man?
