Last year, the EPA ramped up their review of pending mining permits in Appalachia. Of the permits they identified, 106 have been denied or withdrawn, 86 are pending review, and 18 were approved. Explore our interactive map to learn more.

In mid November, Virginians who live at the base of Ison Rock Ridge, a mountain threatened by a pending mountaintop removal permit, gathered in Washington DC for Virginia Rising: The Rally to Keep Ison Rock Ridge Standing. They need you to help by asking the EPA to deny the proposed mine permit, which would destroy 1,200 acres and bury three miles of headwater streams above several Appalachian communities.
A new poll commissioned by Appalachian Mountain Advocates, Earth Justice and the Sierra Club shows overwhelming support for ending mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachian coal mining states. Conducted by two bipartisan firms, the poll has revealed that 57% of informed voters oppose the practice, versus 20% approving.

The Environmental Protection Agency recently released its "Final Guidance on Improving EPA Review of Appalachian Surface Coal Mining Operations Under the Clean Water Act," which seeks to improve standards for permitting mountaintop removal coal mining in Central Appalachia.
Community and environmental advocates, while appreciative of the EPA's efforts to address water pollution from mountaintop removal mining, were disappointed with the final document, saying it falls far short of what is needed to ensure real protection of waterways and human health in Appalachia.

The best defense is a good offense. As Big Coal and their allies in Congress continue attempts to gut public health and environmental protections, the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 1375) has 109 cosponsors and counting.
Sponsored by Frank Pallone of New Jersey and David Reichert of Washington state, this bill would go a long way towards ending mountaintop removably make it illegal for toxic waste from mountaintop removal mines to be dumped into our headwater streams.
