Chicago 1/5 -- The 2012 Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA) national conference will be held Jan. 6-8 in Chicago, with an agenda strongly influenced by the American Economic Association (AEA). For decades the AEA has fostered a narrow, free-market orthodoxy in the economics profession.

Unlike other professional organization, the AEA has no code of ethics and its members no incentive to disclose the source of research funding or other conflicts of interest. Some members presenting at this year’s conference, including John Campbell, chairman of Harvard Economics Department, were featured defending the status quo even as the global economy went into a tailspin in the Oscar winning documentary “Inside Job” directed by Charles Ferguson.

"Members of the AEA who put their own self-interest and that of the 1% above a functioning economy for all are making the AEA morally, intellectually, and academically bankrupt,” says David Orlikoff, film critic and Occupy Chicago organizer. “Profiteering AEA members of both parties move between academia and government, spinning failed free-market theory, and are essentially subsidized by the 1% and the politicians they fund. This corrupt system leads to failed ideas such as trickle-down theory, austerity and low capital gains tax rates. The data are in, and the results are disastrous for our country.”

On December 14th, Occupy Chicago Direct Action Flying Squad To “Turnaround” Mayor Emanuel’s “Failing” Office

Wed. 12/14
"Turnaround" the Mayor's Office
3pm - City Hall, 5th Floor

Since taking office, Rahm Emanuel has made privatizing Chicago's public schools a top priority. Building on the strategy of Arne Duncan, former head of CPS and architect of Renaissance 2010, Mayor Emanuel has continued to scapegoat teachers and school administrators. His policies are destabilizing Chicago’s schools through punitive, union-busting measures like the “Turnaround” program, under which a “failing” school’s existing staff is dismissed without cause by the Board of Education.

“Because we agree with his focus on accountability, we are requesting that "Mayor 1%" Emanuel schedule a meeting with us to address our concerns about his failing the 99% in Chicago,” says Joshua Kaunert, an Occupy Chicago committee member. “We understand that this meeting would be out of the Mayor’s comfort zone, as we can't bring any millionaire campaign donors to the table. If he doesn't agree to a meeting so that we can voice these concerns, we will have no choice but to "Turnaround" the Mayor's Office.”

Mon 12/12: West Coast Port Shutdown Victory Party!

Monday, 4pm, Jackson & LaSalle

In solidarity with the West Coast Port Shutdown, Occupy Chicago will march on Goldman Sachs, 440 S. LaSalle St., on Monday, December 12, 2011. Meet up at Jackson & LaSalle between 4pm and 4:30pm. At 4:30pm we will march to Goldman Sachs. Bring an instrument, wear your finest warm clothes, and celebrate at the Occupy Victory Dance Party in front of Goldman Sachs. A celebration of the shutdown that will inevitably cost them millions. Let's take the fight directly to the 1%.

Show support and solidarity for the hard work and coordination our fellow Occupations are accomplishing. Remember when the elite drank their cocktails laughing at Occupiers from balconies in New York, and from the Art Institute on 10/10/11? Now, it's our turn ~
