Release #75
Default
[info]marta
Release #75 is here! As you can tell, this is our first major release of this year. Some of this went live a few days ago, but the two major sections of this release have just started today, so here's the information on the new features, changes, and bugfixes in this mega-release!

Games

  • We've partnered with iJet media, who has given us four of their most popular games to try on LiveJournal!
  • For those who love games, you can see them and install them here: http://www.livejournal.com/games/
  • For those of you who want to try games, but want to manually change your visibility or contact settings, you can do so on the Games tab on the Account Settings page (example)
  • For those of you who don't want to try games, don't worry, these games do not post anything to your journal (which we love, because you won't have to sort through a trillion game updates on your Friends Page!)
  • While these games are still in beta there may still be some phrases that look a bit odd, but we'll be improving and adding to these in the future, so stay tuned

Community Management Changes

  • These changes will be rolled out over the next few days - until the changes are made, Community Maintainers have been frozen so no one can be added or removed
  • All communities can now have an "Owner" - a maintainer who cannot be removed by other maintainers
  • The Owner is the only one who can rename or delete the community
  • Community Moderators may now add tags to posts, approve members into the community, and screen comments (they still cannot remove members, delete posts, or delete comments)
  • Here is how the Owner will be assigned for each community:
    1. To become assigned as Owner, a user must have been active on LiveJournal in some way during the past three months (logged in, left a comment, any sign of activity). If the Maintainer who would otherwise be named Owner has not been active in the past three months, the next most eligible person will be assigned
    2. If there is a record of who created the community and that person is still a Maintainer, that person is now the Owner
    3. If there is a record of who created the community and that person is NO LONGER a Maintainer, the first-added Maintainer will become the owner (and if they're not eligible, the second-added, and on down the line)
    4. If there is no record of who created the community and there is only one Maintainer, that person will be the Owner
    5. If there is no record of who created the community and there are multiple Maintainers, all the Maintainers will be asked to vote on who should become Owner. Adding and removing Maintainers will be frozen until an Owner is decided (example)

Features and Changes

  • Paid and Permanent journals and communities may now have up to 4,000 tags
  • New header by contest winner [info]spikaleido
  • All new accounts and communities will have the Comment setting "screen comments from non-friends with links" set as default
  • The <marquee> tag will now be stripped from comments when they display (that is, the text will still show, but it will not scroll)
  • Although it was in a patch release on 12/29/10, this is the first major release since, so documenting here that "Screen comments from non-friends with links" is now the default setting for Cyrillic Services journals and communities who had not ever changed their comment screening settings

Bugfixes

  • Fixed an issue which caused it to be impossible to edit the IM fields on the profile (LJSV-1350 and related issues)
  • The LiveJournal Shop v-gift widget on the homepage now displays the dollar sign before the numerical price (instead of after)
  • Corrected minor typos in the Russian translation of the TOS
  • Updated the number for Megafon (Cyrillic SMS only)
  • The sysban/bot error page has been changed from a 403 to a 412 (precondition failed) in order to prevent system caching
  • Interstitial ads will no longer be shown on the iPad
  • Changes were made so that the new YouTube embed code would work correctly

Release 71
staff
[info]coffeechica
Greetings! I'm stepping in for [info]marta this week and bringing you the information about our most recent code release, which is all live now:

Features

  • Twitter Digest -- If you connect your Twitter account to your LJ (see "extensions" profile tab), you now have a checkbox option to have your public tweets posted to your journal each day without using a third-party "tweet shipper".
    • Yes, it's opt-in.
    • All tweets after the 10th tweet are automatically lj-cut.
    • The digest is posted to the journal at 12:00 (in the afternoon) according to your time zone settings; if you don't have a time zone specified, it uses 12:00 GMT. For this initial release, you can't change the time that you want it to post, though this may change in the future.
    • The created entry uses all your default security/content/commenting options.
    • "@username" will auto-link to that username on Twitter, and "#topic" will auto-link to a Twitter search for that topic.
    • The created entry is NOT then auto-posted to Facebook/Twitter. :)
    • Known Issues: We're investigating reports of the entry posting at the incorrect time, as well as posting with the wrong day of the week attached to the tweets.

  • Twitter authorization -- You or your friends can now use a Twitter account (along with Facebook) to comment. These accounts will have the option to upgrade to a "full" LJ account beyond just commenting.

  • Sort community by poster -- See all entries a person has made in a community by adding "?poster=exampleusername" (or "&poster;=exampleusername", if you already have one with a question mark) to the end of the URL. Example: http://community.livejournal.com/lj_releases/?poster=coffeechica will show you all my posts here. Pagination works with this URL argument.

  • New lj-specific tag <lj-map> -- embeds an interactive Google or Yandex iframe map into your journal entry. Tag syntax: <lj-map url="http://exampleurl.com"> where the URL is that of the Google or Yandex map you wish to embed.

Feature Changes & UI Fixes
  • Removed the Hotmail exception for resetting passwords [interlude while I jump for joy \o/]

  • News post email notification is now shortened; includes link to the entire news post

  • Fixed weird bulleted display when entering credit card info

  • For ONTD only: Collapse 3rd level comments after the 5th comment.

Bugfixes
  • Safari & Chrome users get the "Post Media" button again (LJSV-1206)

  • Photobucket tab is back on "Insert Image" options (LJSV-1109)

  • In Opera: Pressing Enter to select a tag won't cause the entry to be posted (LJSV-1130)

  • Custom userheads should now be visible in all system style friends pages (LJSV-1188)

  • Clicking tag names in IE shouldn't overwrite the first tag you've entered (LJSV-1148)

  • Users with >5000 friends-of can again see the counter # change when friended or defriended

  • Don't give a "success" message on comm member rejection if no user was selected

  • Optimized comment loading speed

Changes for users on Cyrillic
  • Fixed display of long post titles in LiveJournal Live

  • Logged-out users won't see ads in unfolded LJTimes articles by paid users

  • Ratings now have regional RSS feeds for Ukraine and Belarus

  • Make it so Ratings now show 15 different authors (because that section gets monopolized by a only a few popular users)

Please report any technical problems with this release to Support.

If you don't have a tech support issue but still want to give us feedback about this release, please leave your feedback here. Thanks a lot, and enjoy the rest of your week!

LiveJournal Mobile
Default
[info]marta
As some of you noticed last week, we've released a new version of the LiveJournal mobile site (m.livejournal.com).

Since we have only a limited number of mobile devices to test with, we'd like to know how it's working on YOUR phone, and would like to pass on any feedback to developers.

When you have a moment in the next day or two, can you please take out your trusty mobile device and try it out?

If you'd like to report a bug or something that doesn't work, can you please let us know which phone/device you're using and your mobile browser (if you know what it is)?

If you'd like to give feedback or make a suggestion, can you please put that clearly in the subject line (that is, "Feedback" or "Suggestion")?

Thanks so much, every bit of information we can get helps!

Release #70
Default
[info]marta
Release #70 is live!

Feature changes:
  • The logic of displaying the Facebook/Twitter crosspost boxes has changed:
    - The ability to crosspost comments that are protected (on a protected post or a screened comment) has been disabled for non-cyrillic users (cyrillic-services accounts still have the option)
    - If you haven't connected a Twitter or Facebook account, the option to crosspost won't show on comments
    - The option to crosspost/repost won't appear when one edits a comment
    - When crossposting/reposting an entry or comment you can now select what thumbnail photo to repost as well by clicking "Choose a pic"

  • The visual design of the button icons on entries have been updated

  • TxtLJ integration has been discontinued due to declining use - it's been removed it from the options on the Mobile Settings and Notifications tabs.

Bugfixes:
  • Pingbacks should not be sent at all if either party has them disabled (LJSV-1190)
  • The drop-down menu for tags should now work on editjournal.bml (LJSV-1155)
  • The userhead image source was broken in some styles; this has been fixed (LJSV-1187)
  • Users with more than 50,000 "friend-of" or communities with more than 50,000 "watched by" will now show the correct number for those values on the profile count
  • When an "identity" account (OpenID/Facebook) is converted to a full account the username of the full account will be referenced instead of the "identity" account in notifications of actions (for instance, community membership requests and comment notifications)
  • The context of pingbacks will be shortened and given proper line breaks (LJSV-1193)
  • Pingbacks shouldn't be sent when the author is also the poster (that is, you don't send pingbacks to yourself) (LJSV-1195)
  • You can now edit a comment (when available) when it is in reply to a now-deleted comment (LJSV-1145)
  • When the HTML for a "repost" button is incorrect, the entry will no longer show a 500 error (LJSV-1153)
  • When a user forwards one username to a renamed username, the old comments once again show the new username (LJSV-1199)
  • When viewing a page showing the intersection of two tags you can now use the "previous" and "next" buttons to page back and forth (LJSV-1126)

Release #69
Default
[info]marta
Release #69 is now about done! For your muti-functional perusal today, we have some new integration with Facebook, Twitter, and OpenID along with the re-launch of Pingbacks!

Facebook Connect can be used like OpenID

Facebook users without a LiveJournal account can log in, comment, list friends, and join communities just like OpenID users:
picture of login screen

picture of connecting accounts

Easy upgrade to full account for OpenID and Facebook Connect users

OpenID and Facebook Connect users can opt to receive email notifications even without a full account (OpenID accounts have already been able to do this for some time now). Converting to a full account is then as easy as clicking Upgrade to full account in the Account Settings of an OpenID or Facebook Connect account.

Link accounts to cross-post to Facebook and Twitter

On the Extensions tab of your Account Settings page, you can now link your Twitter and Facebook accounts to cross-post entries and/or comments you make. Note: this integration is based on a new API, so if you've used the old crosspost function to Facebook, that will no longer work and you'll need to re-connect your accounts through this feature now.

You can also select to repost on the "Post an Entry" page or when you post a comment:

Pingbacks

Pingbacks are back! The setting is here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=privacy. All users who specifically chose a setting last year will have their settings stay the same; new accounts created since then will default to "open" (on)

For those of you new to this Pingbacks thing, it's a way of being notified that someone has linked to your post, and also to give a heads-up or "shout out" to someone whose post you've linked to. Pingbacks will only work on public posts - but work the same whether the posts are in a community or journal (based on the settings of the author of the entry). The "ping" will be left as a screened comment: here's an example (I unscreened the comment).

We also have some other changes and bugfixes:
  • Fixed a problem that caused some users to be unable to edit their profiles (LJSV-1171)
  • Cyrillic characters in an embed code should no longer cause an error (LJSV-1162)
  • Custom colors should now be displayed properly in S1 journals (LJSV-1168)
  • Temporarily removed Webmoney as a payment method
  • Made some improvements to error pages
  • Using the repost tag should repost the entire entry
  • Corrected confusing text in the rename process
  • Added "Click the Finish button to confirm your order" on the last page of shop check-out process
