Raw Story, an independently-owned progressive news and politics site, is looking to fill several positions.
Managing Editor
Raw Story is looking for its first-ever managing editor. Reporting to the executive editor, the ME will be in charge of story assignment, editing reporters (including, but not limited to, copy-editing), managing story placement on the front page and making sure the trains are running on time.
Though there will be occasional opportunities to write, this will primarily be an editorial position.
We are looking for a high-energy web native or web convert who understands what readers click and why, how to edit for the web, how to expand a site’s reach without leaving loyal readers behind and has a strong grasp of social media. Raw Story has a virtual office, so we accept applicants from anywhere, and women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. We are an equal opportunity employer.
Please send a resume, cover letter and salary history to editor@rawstory.com
Associate Editor
The associate editor position is geared at recent college graduates or those who are relatively new to paid journalism. We’re looking for someone with good news judgment, an understanding of the online space, working knowledge of blog platforms, Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites and the ability to work at least one weekend shift (likely either Saturday or Sunday morning from 10-4) with little or no supervision in addition to several weekday shifts and occasional evening hours upon demand (like for the political debates). The job entails managing the front page, posting wire stories, finding video content to fill our 4 video channels (Politics, Satire, Activism and Whoa!) as well as original write-ups for our other channels (2012, Occupy, US News, World, Tech, Science and Media). Send a resume, cover letter and 3 links to writing samples to editor@rawstory.com
Swing-shift Editor
This position is geared at people interested in getting more experience in online journalism who might be willing to take on more responsibility later. Designed to give current contract staff the ability to take time off, we’re looking for people with maximum flexibility in terms of their schedules — though we’ll almost always notify you at least one week before a shift comes available — who are team players with good news judgment, who have the ability to learn quickly and are solid workers who require minimal supervision. The job’s responsibilities are similar to those of the associate editor. Send a resume, cover letter and 3 links to online writing samples to editor@rawstory.com
Internships Available
Interns are a important part of The Raw Story editorial team. You won’t be getting coffee or managing the social calendars of our senior staff. Instead you’ll receive real, hands-on training in producing one of the top independent news and political sites in the US. As an intern, you’ll help keep our editors on top of breaking news, manage our wire service content, help us with social media, pitch and write stories, and help produce video content.
Interested candidates should be quick learners who are able to work in a fast-paced environment and have exceptional writing, blogging, and multimedia skills. Please send a resume to editor@rawstory.com.
