Editorial Review for Yuki Japanese Restaurant – by Jenny Tom

In Short
With picnic tables lining the sidewalk and wooden water wheels spinning away, Yuki fits right in on casual, bustling Broadway. Wooden screens create privacy between tables, while bar seats allow diners to watch the chef action up close. Sushi rolls are clever and creative, like the Mai Thai, a dynamite combo of shrimp, avocado, cilantro and lettuce; and Red Heat, spicy shrimp teamed with scallions, cucumber, crunchy masago and bits of tempura.

I was here with a Japanese friend to try something new. The waitress didn't greet us and she didn't smile when she waited on us either. I understand that she doesn't like being a server, but don't take it out on the customers. I was impressed by their sushi roll menu, but when I tried it, it didn't amaze me at all. The sushi rice didn't have much vinegar, which it's suppose to. When I ordered Oyako donburi, it was terrible. They simply had rice, fried an egg and put teriyaki sauce over the chicken. It wasn't Oyako donburi at all. Where is the mirin in there! I will never come back here again. Any sushi restaurant that serves imitation crab, bad sushi rice, bad service and bad donburis is not worth it. Even my foreign Japanese friend thinks it's bad. Koji Osakaya is way better down the street. Check out the one in Gresham. That Koji's is one of the best! Saburo is not bad. One time order, but big rolls. Rice could be better. Still better than this place.

Like most reviews for Yuki, it was the poor service that will determine my final visit to Yuki. My boyfriend and I have gone there at least 6-8 times over the last few years, but last night was the last draw. I brought a friend who had never been there before, and was hoping to show her a good night, but it turned out to be another horrible service experience at Yuki. When we arrived, we decided to sit inside so we might get better service, ya right!, but they sat us at the bar without even asking, and it was a wed, night at 5 pm so they weren't super busy or anything. After we were seated in the deserted bar we then had to ask for everything, napkins, water, our bill, ect... they even downgraded their chopsticks since last time we had been there to probably the cheapest chopsticks available, they almost cut us with slivers and basically fell apart when you broke them in two. The crab was dry and definitely not fresh, it certainly came from a can! and when I pay $4.25 for two pieces of crab sushi, I expect it to be fresh crab! Overall, I will not support this restaurant any more, they seemed to care less about out requests for water and the check, and some of the staff was even sitting at the bar, like 5 feet away, and we still had horrible service!!!! Don't go here, There customer service will never improve if people still support this place. Force it to change by not giving them your business!!!

Pros: Some of the fish sushi was OK

Cons: The poor service was so bad that were never going there again!!!
