Patterico's Pontifications

Guest Blogger: Callimachus

We have one more guest blogger, going under the pseudonym “Callimachus.” Make sure and give him a laurel, and hearty handshake.

Double Standard

Filed under: Blogging Matters — Patterico @ 8:42 pm

It’s a clear double standard, folks. Patterico inspires a “Grapevine” item on the Brit Hume show, and gets no explicit credit on the show, no video of the segment preserved on the internet, and no Instapundit link.

Sheesh — I didn’t even get to see it.

Meanwhile, Bill from INDC Journal gets all of the above.

The only conceivable explanation: Bill deserved it more, because his post was so great.

Superior merit leading to greater accolades? Where’s the equity?!

Yup, Kerry Did Well

Fred Barnes and Bill Kristol agree that Kerry did well. That seals the deal. If people as conservative as they are say that, nobody is going to disagree.

I think conventional wisdom will be that Kerry “won.” But it was no TKO.

He sure did a hell of a lot better than Gore ever did.

Moolahs

I wonder what the Iranian “moolahs” thought of tonight’s debate.

So, Who Won?

We’re getting near the end. Tim Blair says you have to be taking psychotropic drugs to think Kerry won. I’m not so sure.

I am more convinced by Bush’s arguments. But stylistically, I thought Kerry was very strong — well-spoken and “presidential.” I think he did better in that category than did Bush.

For the squishy swing voters, who don’t vote on principles and policies, style is probably more important. So, I think Kerry made progress tonight.

Homeland Security

Kerry has a good answer on Homeland Security. But you all know I think Bush has not done well on this issue.

And Bush has a very weak beginning to his answer: how will we pay for it? People don’t want to hear that — not when John Kerry just mentioned tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.

UPDATE: Much later in the debate, Kerry is asked what the top threat to America is, and he says without hesitation: “Nuclear proliferation. Nuclear proliferation.”

Damn right.

I’m pleased to see that Bush agrees, though he puts it in terms of “weapons of mass destruction in the hands of terrorists.”

Gaffes, Right Off the Bat

Let the gaffes begin.

I realize everyone in America doesn’t agree with the decisions I have made.

The enemy has fought vociferously.

(I didn’t mean to live-blog this thing, but I can’t help making these observations.)

Both these guys are very concerned about being resolute — a concept which apparently includes pounding the podium with your fist.

UPDATE: A pre-September 10th mentality.

These are all Bush’s.

The Lights Are On

The warning lights are there on the podium. I guess John Kerry’s crew forgot their screwdrivers.

Bush 1, Kerry 0.
