Two decades ago, when I was a reporter at the Detroit News writing the first stories about bridge and trucking baron Manuel “Matty” Moroun, he sent someone on his payroll to talk to me.

My hope, after trying for weeks to land an interview, was that Moroun would finally agree to a meeting.

“Matty wants to know why you want to ruin his life,” said the underling, a former state politician.
