TDN: Brewer’s Ball Wrap Up

by frederic on February 28, 2012

The theme for last week’s Thursday Drink Night was “Brewer’s Ball” in honor of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Brewer’s Ball charity event this Saturday in Washington, D.C. The concept was to use beer in a cocktail. True, we did this back in July (see the drinks here) right before the beer-themed Mixology Monday; however, using beer in cocktails never grows old! Without further ado, let’s get to the hops-worthy highlights of the night.

Mark of A Drinker’s Peace was pretty crafty in that he did an inverse Boiler Maker. Instead of a dropping a shot into a beer, the shot was the beer into a Bourbon Daisy!
Boilermashup
• 1 1/2 oz Bulleit Bourbon
• 1/2 oz Zwack Unicum
• 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
Shake with ice and strain into a short Highball glass garnished with a lemon peel Horse’s Neck. Drop a shot glass full of IPA in, and drink.

Rated R Cocktails’ Seru crafted a spiced drink using Pabst that reminded me a lot of a Tiki champagne cocktail I had a while back!
Hipster’s Hiccup
• 1/2 oz Meyer Lemon Juice
• 1/2 oz Lucid Absinthe
• 1/2 oz Cinnamon Syrup
Shake with ice and strain into a champagne flute. Top with 3 oz of PBR and stir.

Zach Pearson went all fruity and funky on us with pear, grapefruit, and Belgian beer notes.
House in the Woods
• 2 oz Bols Barrel Aged Genever
• 1/2 oz Clear Creek Pear Liqueur
• 6 drops Bittermens Hopped Grapefruit Bitters
• 1 dash Lactart
Shake with ice and strain into a Double Old Fashioned glass with a single ice cube. Top with 3 oz Saison Dupont.

Jim Maserson (a/k/a Sunny & Rummy) took the more traditional Boilermaker route with a spiced and fortified rye bomb in a glass or rye beer. In addition, Jim won best pun drink name of the night honors with this riff of a New Orleans classic!
Brieux Carré
• 6 oz Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye
• 1 1/4 oz rye
• 1 tsp Bénédictine
• 1 dash Angostura Bitters
• 1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters
Assemble all but the beer in a shot glass. Drop the shot glass into a Highball glass containing the beer.

TDN: Bitter Wrap Up

by frederic on February 21, 2012

Last week for Thursday Drink Night, the theme might have been in the wake of the previous one entitled Not Love, Just Lust for it was TDN: Bitter. The event was described as, “Because you know, sometimes, you just have to say ‘fuck the world’ and drink something dreadfully bitter.” With that, mixologists from across the country gathered in the chatroom to craft drinks using old classics like Fernet Branca and Averna and new classics like the Bittermens line. Here are a few of the drinks proffered that night:

Sean Mike of Scofflaw’s Den went with a Pousse-café designed as a shooter. With the adage “Red next to yellow kills a fellow. Red next to black is a friend to Jack” to sort out whether the snake you found was a very poisonous one or a safe one, Sean Mike aptly named this the Coral Snake.
Coral Snake
• 1/2 oz Campari
• 1/2 oz Strega
• 1/2 oz Averna
Layer in a shot glass: Campari first, Strega middle, Averna last. Shoot, chase with a bitter beer.

Cocktail Virgin/Slut’s Fred Yarm did a riff on the Fernet-laden Alcazer and made it into a Sour. With Fernet putting up a fight, the drink got dubbed after one of the famous pugilistic match ups of the last century (it also helped that he thought the classic was spelled Alacazer).
Ali-Frazier
• 1 1/2 oz Rye
• 1/2 oz Cointreau
• 1/2 oz Fernet Branca
• 1/2 oz Lemon Juice
Shake with ice and strain into a cocktail glass.

Dan Chadwick of Kindred Cocktails database offered up a pair of drinks, but this one using a Bittermens liqueur was my favorite.  I also liked the choice to stir a lemon juice-containing drink to keep the texture silky smooth.
Parfume Amere
• 1 oz Gin
• 1 oz Bittermens Amère Nouvelle
• 1 oz Punt e Mes
• 1/2oz Lemon Juice
• 2 dash Regan’s Orange Bitters
Stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass.
