'The Lorax' Stuns Box Office With $70.7M Opening

33 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

"The Lorax" surpassed all box-office expectations in its opening weekend, taking $70.7 million -- the biggest opening of 2012 so far and the most ever for a Universal animated film. Universal's pre-release expectations for the 3D movie were around $40 million. Warner Bros. had a strong opening weekend, as well. Its R-rated comedy "Project X" debuted to $20.8 million. And The Weinstein Company saw that Oscar bump it had been waiting for. "The Artist," which won five Academy Awards last Sunday, returned to the top 10 at the box office, taking $3.9 million. »

'The Lorax' Gets the Message Out on Friday

20 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

On Theodor Geisel's 108th birthday, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax took first place at the box office with an estimated $17.4 million. That's the best opening day since The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1's monster debut last November, and it's also the best start for an animated movie since Cars 2 last June. The Lorax's opening was noticeably higher than Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! ($13.3 million), though it was less than Despicable Me's $21.3 million. Still, based on the track-record of previous March animated movies The Lorax should top Despicable Me's $56.4 million weekend opening.Project X also performed well with an estimated $8.17 million second place start. That's a bit lower than Chronicle's $8.6 million opening last month, though in one day it topped the total grosses of recent party movies Take Me Home Tonight ($6.93 million) and College ($4.7 million). For the weekend, Project X should wind up with over $20 million. »

And now: GLAAD vs. Kirk Cameron.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is taking on the 1980s sitcom actor for comments Cameron made to CNN’s Piers Morgan.

Morgan asked the former Growing Pains star and evangelical Christian if he thought homosexuality was a sin. “I think that it’s unnatural,” Cameron replied on Friday’s Piers Morgan Tonight. “I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”

Cameron was also asked about gay marriage:”I believe marriage was defined by God,” Cameron said. “Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and »

Lindsay Lohan's Latest Comeback Now Includes Role in 'Sexual Thriller'

20 hours ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

Tonight marks Lindsay Lohan's umpteenth 'last chance,' according to this brief Vulture history, starting out with her hosting Saturday Night Live (where she plans to not only make fun of her own spiral-of-shame lifestyle but do it in song) and followed by her Lifetime movie role as Elizabeth Taylor. Now she can add another acting gig to her comeback tour, this time in a 'sexual thriller' to be produced by the man behind Madonna's messy W.E. feature film and directed by the Swedish music video master responsible for Robbie Williams' She's Madonna and Madonna's Hung Up. The Post, which broke the news, had little else to add, but we predict this is all part of a diabolical scheme to make a Lindsay-as-Madonna biopic in the near future. »

New Amy Winehouse Scholarship Announced for London Theater School

19 minutes ago | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

The Amy Winehouse Foundation has set up a scholarship at the Sylvia Young Theater School, where a 13-year-old Amy auditioned with her rendition of the jazz classic "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and studied voice. "It would be wonderful to find another Amy," the school's founder told Reuters, "but there was only one Amy." Which is likely why the scholarship is open to all money-strapped students, not just those looking to sing — after all, young Amy did dance and later took to wearing ballet flats, though she wasn't exactly the greatest fan of theater actors. »

Another actor has joined J.J. Abrams and Supernatural creator Eric Kripke’s new Revolution.

Billy Burke, whose TV credits include The Closer, 24 and Rizzoli & Isles but who is perhaps best known for playing Kristen Stewart’s dad in the Twilight flicks — has been cast in NBC’s Abrams/Kripke-produced hour-long drama pilot.

The thriller is described as a high-octane action drama following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.

The ensemble also includes Former Breaking Bad evildoer Giancarlo Esposito as a hard-as-steel »

George Clooney recently addressed the rumors that constantly seem to spread about the actor's sexual preference: "My private life is private, and I'm very happy in it," he told The Advocate. "Who does it hurt if someone thinks I'm gay? I'll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don't give a s--t." "I think it's funny," Clooney continued, "but the last thing you'll ever see me do is jump up and down, saying, 'These are lies!' That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the

"Community" — which finally returns to its old NBC time slot on Thursday, March 15 at 8 p.m. — became the first show in the history of PaleyFest to be invited three years in a row, and it was easy to see why at Saturday night's panel, which I had the pleasure of moderating. The cast (minus Chevy Chase and Donald Glover), creator Dan Harmon and producers Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan and Russ Krasnoff were smart and funny and overflowing with affection for each other and for the very loud, enthusiastic group of fans who came to the Saban Theatre for »

Lindsay Lohan Hosts SNL: Best and Worst Skits?

As someone who very much enjoyed Lindsay Lohan’s work in Mean Girls and Freaky Friday, I was genuinely hoping she’d score some big laughs as host of this week’s Saturday Night Live. Unfortunately for the troubled actress, however, there’s only so much one can do with setups built around prison-rape jokes or the sight of Fred Armisen in drag getting repeatedly hit by a car.

It was a harbinger of bad things to come when the opening monologue focused almost entirely on various SNL castmembers “surreptitiously” scoping out Lohan for signs of her notorious erratic behavior »

Recap: 'Saturday Night Live' - Lindsay Lohan and Jack White

I’m not terribly interested in passing judgment either way on Lindsay Lohan in tonight’s “Saturday Night Live” recap. Plenty of ink, both actual and virtual, have been spilled in the name of detailing her every high and low over the past decade. What I’m here to do is judge this particular episode of “SNL,” and her hosting duties on it. There’s no doubt that there will be plenty of jokes made at her expense, either directly or indirectly. So I’ll talk about that as much as it pertains to the sketches. Other than that? It will be the usual complaints about »
