Oxford Dictionary of English Folklore:
midday |
Theoretically, midday should be as important as midnight in the daily cycle of time, but this is not so in English lore—probably because the noonday sun is very rarely uncomfortable, let alone dangerous, in the English climate. Interestingly, one of the few magical rituals prescribed for noon was done on Midsummer Day; this coinciding of the midpoint of the summer and the daylight hours presumably redoubled its efficacity. It is only in childlore that midday is regularly significant: for schoolchildren, customary periods of permitted tricking or tormenting generally stop at noon, for example April Fool jokes.
