Dr. Susan Shaw Addresses Crisis in World's Oceans at Northeastern University in Boston

Dr. Susan Shaw, a leading marine toxicologist, founder and director of the Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) and professor at the State University of New York, Albany's School of Public Health, visited Boston, Mass. as a Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow at Northeastern University, where she delivered a series of lectures on topics related to key issues facing the ocean environment. Dr. Shaw's visit was from March 26 to 30, and her lectures included both public and classroom discussions. Read the Press Release

MERI Director Dr. Susan Shaw Receives Prestigious Explorers Club "Citation of Merit" Award

Marine Environmental Research Institute (MERI) Director Dr. Susan Shaw received a special "Citation of Merit" award at the Explorers Club Annual Dinner on March 17 in recognition of her "outstanding feats of exploration." This award honors her pioneering discoveries of the legacy of man-made pollutants in the ocean environment and her leadership role in ocean conservation. It was presented at an onstage ceremony before more than 1,000 people at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

Countless gallons of toxic crude oil and dispersants have entered the Gulf of Mexico. With 20 years of experience tracking toxins in the ocean food web, MERI brings critical expertise to the crisis.

MERI's director, Dr. Susan Shaw, is a marine toxicologist. She dove in the oil slick in May to witness impacts first hand, and has since become an influential voice in the media and scientific community on the impacts of the oil and dispersant mix.
