Democratic Strategist: Republicans Like Cain as a “Black Man Who Knows His Place”
Published 1, October 31, 2011 Bizarre , Politics , Society 163 CommentsI have previously raised concern over the treatment of Herman Cain by the media and Democratic activists because of his race. While I have strong disagreements with Cain, I find it discomforting to see how his race is such a preoccupation with Democrats. This weekend, I was taken aback by the statement of Democratic strategist and MSNBC analyst Karen Finney that Cain is “a black man who knows his place.”

Florida Woman Gives New Meaning To The “Good Book”
Published 1, October 30, 2011 Bizarre , Criminal law , Religion 11 CommentsSubmitted by Mark Esposito, Guest Blogger
42-year-old Tonya Sutton isn’t one to wear religion on her sleeve — more like in her hands. Toting a Bible in one hand and an open Colt .45 malt liquor in the other, the Fort Pierce native was stopped by police for violating Florida’s open container law. When police cracked open the Good Book, and much to their surprise, they found a hollowed out section for Ms. Sutton’s crack pipe – allegedly, of course. Police arrested Ms. Sutton on alcohol and drug paraphernalia charges.
Not sure if Sutton got the idea from the 1968 Robert Mitchum film, Five Card Stud, where his character, Rev. Rudd, kept his firearm in a carved-out Bible, or from “Andy” in The Shawshank Redemption, who did the same for his rock pick, but either way it’s ironically delicious.
This may also help explain why one in three Americans enthusiastically takes the Bible as literally true. After all, Karl Marx did call religion the “opiate of the masses.” Who knew that old German had a funny streak in him? In any event, it seems Bible pushers have a new marketing gimmick for their product. As every kid knows, a prize in the box always boosts sales.

George Will, a conservative columnist for the Washington Post, is not pleased with the GOP’s front runner, Mitt Romney. In his latest column, Will slams Romney for Romney’s support of ethanol subsidies. Will notes that Obamacare is a cousin of Romneycare. Will also goes after Romney’s waffling on support of the opposition to the repeal of the law that Ohio Republican Gov. John Kasich enacted, limiting the collective bargaining rights of public employees.

So You Don’t Think You’re A Slaver?
Published 1, October 30, 2011 International , Justice , Society , Things That Tick Me Off 61 CommentsSubmitted by Gene Howington, Guest Blogger
So you don’t think you’re a slaver?
Of course you don’t.
Statistically speaking, most of you are decent people. You find the notion of slavery abhorrent. Slavery is illegal in this country and immoral and unethical everywhere. You’d never hire someone using slaves to work for you. You’d never buy something you knew without a doubt was made by slaves.
Right? Or would you? What if you didn’t know your subcontractor relied upon slave labor or the goods you purchased were made by slave labor or relied on natural resources gathered and processed by slaves? If you did, would you do something about it? Knowledge is power. As your quantity and quality of relevant information increases, so will the quality of your decision making.
Would you like to get an idea about how much slave labor goes into maintaining your lifestyle, if any?
There’s an app for that.
Conservative Family Values? AntiGay Candidate Admits Lesbian Affair With Student 40 Years Ago, Still Wants Political Office

An interesting story out of Appomattox, Virginia, and one that hits closer to home than I originally thought. Anti-Gay lobbyist and former deputy clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates, Linda Wall, wants to put her conservative ideology to work for the citizens of Appomattox, Virginia in the election for the Commonwealth’s 59th District House seat. Running as an independent, she describes herself as a “Republican-leaning conservative.” Her campaign slogan is: “A Campaign of Protection and Restoration.” But the place where our Country was reunited in 1865, is wondering just what kind of “protection” she’s talking about and has a real dilemma on its hand since Wall admitted a lesbian affair with one of her junior high students in the early 1970s.

ICE Balls: Federal Agents Announce “We Don’t Need a Warrant, We’re ICE”

Now the majority of searches in the United States are done without searches and private companies are now conducting searches for copyright and trademark infringements with the pleasing of Congress (and the lobbyists that shape the laws). Now, government agents have been offering a type of inverse Miranda warning — explaining that we don’t need stinking warrants in raiding homes. Karzai previously announced that he wished that he had supported the Taliban over the United States. Even with billions of dollars disappearing (including huge sums reportedly seized by the Karzai family), we continue to drain our treasury to prop up a corrupt and often overtly hostile government that denies women basic rights and has established increasing ties to the Taliban and other extremist groups. Holdings, or ratio decidendi (Latin for “the rationale for the decision), are those parts of a court’s opinion that are binding on lower courts and later courts. This binding is referred to as the doctrine of stare decisis which provides hierarchical (vertical) and temporal (horizontal) continuity throughout the judicial system. Obiter Dicta (Latin for a statement “said in passing”), or dicta, are those parts of a court’s opinion that are not binding on lower courts and later courts. Dicta may suggest an interpretation of the law that may prove useful in future cases.

It’s time once again for a history lesson, coming to you courtesy of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida). The questions are: when did Fidel Castro come to power and when did Rubio’s parents come to America? According to Rubio’s official bio, his parents “came to America following Fidel Castro’s takeover” of Cuba. Rubio used that compelling story to shape his political persona. Rubio would tell audiences that he was the “son of exiles” who fled their beloved homeland after “a thug” took power.

Is “Break” A Racist Term?
Published 1, October 18, 2011 Free Speech , Politics , Society 136 CommentsI was curious recently about a statement by Ed Schultz, host of MSNBC’s the Ed Show, that Sen. Jim Demint, R-S.C., used racist langauge in his opposition to Obamacare when he said “If we are able to stop Obama on this [health care law], it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.” There are ample reasons to criticize this statements — not the least of which is the notion that we will destroy health care simply to gain a political advantage. However, is “break him” a racist term?

Did The HMS Edinburgh Just Try To Murder The First Lady?
Published 1, October 18, 2011 Criminal law , International , Politics , Society 16 CommentsThe Secret Service recently stopped a threat to First Lady Michele Obama during her trip to Cape Town, South Africa while sitting in her five-star hotel. They promptly called authorities to confront the culprit: the HMS Edinburgh. The agents were alarmed that the British war ships had its Sea Dart missiles turned toward the hotel . . . and the First Lady. The Secret Service is infamous for overreacting but this really takes the cake. Of course, no one will be disciplined for such an insulting and moronic objection.

Lady Goo Goo sings a popular parody called “Petty-razzi” below — a youtube hit.

Rock of Ages: Scientists Determine Mars Once Had Mild Surface Temperature
Published 1, October 17, 2011 Academics , Science 12 CommentsThis is a very cool story. Scientists have discovered that Mars once had a mild temperature of 64 degrees Fahrenheit. They deduced the temperature from a rock found in Antarctica that had a wild ride starting four billion years ago. (Of course, the scientists again ignore the “creation science” account and misjudge the age of the rock by just short of four billion years).

The GOP Continues to Wage War on Women with H. R. 358
Published 1, October 16, 2011 Congress , Politics , Uncategorized 115 CommentsSubmitted by Elaine Magliaro, Guest Blogger
The GOP continues to wage its war on women’s rights. Last week, the House passed HR 358. HR 358, ironically named the “Protect Life Act,” could be the cause of women being left to die in hospital emergency rooms without treatment if the bill becomes a law—which is unlikely since President Obama has already released a statement in opposition to the bill.
Here’s a brief explanation of the bill from Human Rights Watch:
Bill Would Permit Hospitals to Let Women in Need of Care Die
(Washington, DC) – The United States House of Representatives approved a bill on October 13, 2011, that would put women’s lives at risk, Human Rights Watch said today. The bill, if it becomes law, would reverse longstanding federal policy requiring hospitals to provide life-saving care regardless of expense, Human Rights Watch said.
The Protect Life Act, HR 358, would amend the healthcare reform law to grant hospitals far-reaching powers to deny patients abortion care, without any exception for emergency situations. US law currently requires hospitals receiving federal funds to provide emergency care to anyone in need up to the point at which they can be stabilized or transferred, if the original hospital is incapable of providing the care they need.
“The misnamed Protect Life Act is about allowing women to die if they need an emergency abortion,” said Meghan Rhoad, women’s rights researcher at Human Rights Watch. “It is a vicious attack on women’s rights and on the most basic right to life.”

The Fourth Amendment often appears to be on life support, however in Arizona v. Gant, it got a slight reprieve. The Supreme Court voted 5-4 with Stevens, joined by Scalia, Souter, Thomas, and Ginsburg voting in the majority. Not the usual grouping for a 5-4 decision. This case involves the search-incident-to-arrest exception to the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unreasonable searches.

His family was crushed this week in a meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron when he told them that he was blocking a public inquiry into the death — linked to a police informant. Court Rules That Feds Cannot Be Sued For Destruction of $750,000 Ferrari After Alleged “Joyride” By Agent and Prosecutor
Published 1, October 13, 2011 Bizarre , Criminal law 18 CommentsWe have been following the lawsuit against the FBI after an agent destroyed a $750,000 Ferrari on what was described as a joyride. FBI agent Fred Kingston was accused of taking out a stolen 1995 Ferrari F50 — one of only 50 such cars in the United States. Kingston was instructed to move the car from the FBI garage and so Kingston reportedly called Assistant US Attorney J. Hamilton Thompson to come along for the ride. The agent ended up crashing the car — causing $750,000 but now the Justice Department insists that it is not liable for the damage. This week the court agreed and dismissed the case — leaving the FBI with little deterrent for the negligent damage to private property. There has been no mention of any discipline for Kingston — beyond having to drive his own car. As for the prosecutor, his office prevailed in establishing a rule that even a joyride fits within the discretion of the government.

Florida Governor Campaigns Against . . . Anthropologists
Published 1, October 12, 2011 Academics , Politics , Science , Society 35 CommentsFlorida Governor Rick Scott is messing with the wrong people. Recently, Scott used anthropologists as an example of the type of degree that the state could do without. Anthropologists have reacted across the country, suggesting that Scott should be re-classified as a Homo Moronus. I would be careful before you tick off people (in the case of forensic anthropologists) who dig up bodies for a living. In the academy, we have long viewed our anthropologist colleagues with a certain fear and intimidation. When you confront one of these guys at a faculty senate meeting, they make it clear that there are “a lot of still active tar pits around the country where mammals can disappear for thousands of years.” When a critic for another department disappears, they just shrug and say, “Louie, is sleeping with the aquatic vertebrate.”
