I need some advice.
I am an American going to grad school in Northern Ireland next year. My question is what my husband is supposed to do. If he comes on my school visa, I have to support both of us, but I am only allowed to work 20 hours a week, so that's not going to happen. I thought maybe he could get Irish citizenship which would help, but it said something like his dad would have had to do it before he was born. He works for an electrical company now but is not yet licensed and can't start his apprenticeship until after we come back, so I don't think he could get a skilled labour job there. I don't think he has the marks to get into grad school, plus he doesn't want to, and then we'd have to pay for that too.
What do we do? Can he just come as a "tourist" and find some sort of small job? Are there other options? I'm going to try to get in touch with the embassy but thought some of you might lead me in the right direction first.

I was just wondering if anyone on here has had to deal with the british embassy about passport applications? I've been trying since september to get my passport, time and time again they have sent it back saying i need more documentation. This time around i have sent every little thing that they have asked for including extra letters of identification from school teachers and government workers like they asked for. But its been about a month and a half and im afraid that yet again they will send it back or call me asking for things i dont have such as a green card or many other things they have bugged me for. Anyone ever dealt with something like this? any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you haven't already you must look at this website

It looks like I will be finally leaving Ohio in less than a years time (nice one!), and one possible destination is Washington DC. I don't know much about the area, although some people have suggested that living in Baltimore and commuting is an option, and wondered if anyone knew what it's like to live there? What kind of job prospects are there for a Brit there? What is the living standard like? Is it insanely expensive everywhere (and you earn enough to cover that)? Are there any nearly-real pubs there? Is there somewhere to get curry at 1am in the morning? Important questions like that.
I know there will be more interesting jobs there than this dead-end area at least.

been a member of this community for a while, but never posted anything, but i finally decided to tell everyone about my situation
I'm an American (eh) and my boyfriend is Scottish. We've been dating for a little over a year. He lived here in the states for a year on an internship and he had to go back in October (it was a very sad time) anyway I just got back Tuesday from Scotland, I was there visiting for 2 weeks. and now I have to wait another 4 months until I see him, because he'll be coming here for two weeks to visit me.
Anyway I'm thinking of going there for school, I haven't applied to any school er anything yet..and he is thinking of coming here
we're just going to see what happens first.
I miss him loads and I really hate how difficult it is for us to live in the same fucking country. I really love Scotland though, and if it weren't for me being so close with my family I would move there permanantly ..anyway that's my story in a nutshell

i was born over here, but ive spent most of my life in England, moved beck here in 2004.
I miss my friends and family so much, just wanted to say hi to all of you who are in my position too.
i know how you feel!!!!
Its so weird to have to expalin what half of the words i say mean to Americans, of course no harm meant, I love learning a new American word or way of life!
