Hi all, This may be a long shot, but I've been staying in the U.K for the past month and am now in Cornwall for the week staying in Bodmin with my aunty and uncle. Hi, I am the moderator of this community and I would like to apologise for not removing the spam earlier. Argh! it's so annoying that people have to spam in lj communities. Although I will always be a Cornish maid I have not actually lived in Cornwall for a number of years (just going down 2-3 times a year to see parents) so if anyone who is more proper Cornish than me would like to take over as moderator than just say. i'm from russia, so sorry for my english. I've got a problem. I extremally need for a book: smth about kernow history (lost cornwall or vanishing cornwall-this prefered). Hiya, A few weeks ago, I was in Cornwall, on Bodmin moor, and went to the little known Carbilly Tor, near which is a ruin known as King Arthurs Hall. A friend and I climbed to the top of the granite stack on the tor (this is a pretty lethal climb by the way, I wouldnt reccomend it unless you are with friends!), and found what we believe to be a (rather phallic) carving on the top. I cant find any information on this anywhere online, nor do we think this is on a leyline, so I am posting on a few communities on LJ and other sites, to see what you guys think of the carving, and to see if there is any really obscure information floating around out there.... | | Saturday, May 26th, 2007 | 12:22 pm

My 'Oh' experience at Jamaica Inn
So I'm reading Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier at the moment, and romantically thought I'd stop by the place of the title during a recent fleeting visit to Cornwall. I had heard the place had been hijacked by one of those vile chains and was now bright yellow and flashing but happily I found it largely unchanged, having last seen it some 25 years ago (as part of a primary school outing...I was about 8 and very bewildered having just been marched across Bodmin Moor via Brown Willy and everything).
Built as a coaching inn in 1750, though apparently used largely to hide the contraband that had been smuggled ashore, Jamaica seems to stretch out in every available direction, having been mightily extended in 1778 and now including the 'Du Maurier Museum and Gift Shop' (ack!). I tried to walk all the way around with my camera to spy something authentic, but found that every possible way was barred by a friendly "Keep Out" sign. So you really are lead to admire the original part of the building from the front, marred only slightly by the beer sombreros and cackling tourists...I refuse to accept I was a tourist on account of being born in Cornwall and largely hiding my camera. Soo...inside we ate a strange kind of help-yourself-and-we'll-make-up-a-price buffet lunch and ignoring the lily-gilding references to smugglers everywhere, I have to say it's exactly the kind of pub I love - low beamed ceilings, small intimate bar, mahoosive stone fire place, dark heavy atmosphere. Very cool. On the whole, you get the impression that the inn, despite its very real criminal past, has become a monument in praise of Du Maurier's fictitious novel, and it's a little bit sad...but that's not the worst of it... No, this is far more irritating - the place is crammed with plot spoilers making it a complete no-no for anyone reading or hoping to read the book. Hooooooyes, at one point I even found myself standing on a brass-look plate with the cheery message 'On this spot Joss Merlyn was murdered'. Well, thanks for that. I am half way through the book and he's alive and well. Oh, and that lovely albino reverend from Altarnun? Yeah, he's actually "the" villain. ...Cheers! | 12:00 pm

Sproglet will be devastated because he directed her in three of the Origo Mundi plays. I haven't been able to tell her because she's in Luxembourg at the moment, so when she gets back, full of fun and joy, I'll have to break her heart and let her know that Dom lost his fight with the black dog. Goonhilly
Why? In this technological age the Goonhilly site is perfectly adequate to fulfil the requirements of the work it undertakes. If I can IM the rest of the world from my computer desk there is no need to partly close this site and relocate it to England. Will it make the reception better? I doubt it! What waffle BT spouts! Centralization! I am soooooooo mad! And they are hoping to keep the visitor centre open! A few cleaners sent in to brush off the cobwebs a couple of times a week should take care of that then. Of course they can pay the cleaners minimum wage - that should help keep their costs down! Cornwall has been and is being mined of all its resources yet again. Never mind, I expect they can sell off any unwanted bits of land for redevelopment - retirement homes, second homes, holiday chalets - the list is endless! Myrna Combellack novels
Quick question for you all (new to all this so sorry if I mess up on community protocol in any way): Anybody here into Myrna Combellack novels? I read about one called The Permanent History of Penaluna's Van in one of those glossy magazines about life in Cornwall when I was last back in the homeland and was addicted. Kept looking for them in the libraries thereafter but they seemed to be permanently out. I asked around and people are saying she's really popular. Would be interested to know who else is reading them though. Anyone have any info on Myrna Combellack of any other kind it'd be seriously welcome. Polperro
Hello! I apologize if no one has any idea what I'm talking about, this is the only community I could find that had the word "polperro" as an interest. I have a charm, and on the bottom it says "Genuine Polperro Pixie" I know Polperro is a place... so that means that the charm was made in polperro? Or is a "Polperro Pixie" something? This Sunday, June 19th 2005, 7 homes in Newmill will open their private gardens. There will be stalls offering/selling: plants, cream teas, wooden garden items, bric-a-brac, books, etc.
The event starts at noon and lasts until 5:00. Tickets are £2.50 and include all gardens.
