I have read a number of pieces by Canning here. He's great. But I think he should try again for a better picture. This one doesn't do him justice. It's a "smile for the camera photo", where the photographer didn't take it right away while his smile was still spontaneous. That, and the flash is harsh, with several points of over-exposure/glare on his face and teeth, and deep shadows to left and to right. Natural indirect light is best. In an urban environment, you can look for a spot outdoors in the shade with lots of light bouncing off a white or gray concrete wall that is lit up by sunlight. Avoid direct sun, as it's impossible not to squint. Bring along a friend who can engage in conversation, and shoot over the friend's shoulder. Shoot a few pictures without worrying about expression, and stop to look at them for settings, lighting, angle, composition, stray hair, etc. then when all that is good, shoot a lot of pictures, like 20 (twenty) at least, so that they can be culled for the best one and for different expressions. Two friends with one decent camera can do this for you in 20 minutes during a lunch outing. Go for lunch several times and change roles so that everyone gets some nice portrait pictures of themselves. Or buy lunch for your two friends.
