It needed adjustment

Some cats are like demented kindergarteners; they need crafts.

If we have a cat who “won’t leave things alone” they need more things.

While we can teach our cats to leave certain things alone, we will do far better to give our cats those things in a cat-safe form.

A cat who can’t leave things with fiddly knobs and sliders alone is asking for their own “busy box” to play with. A cat who is always crunching slabs of cardboard between her teeth is given slabs of cardboard. A cat who pesters our houseplants is asking for some kitty grass of their own.

But sometimes the problem is a bit more complicated, as in they play with so many things! and we have trouble finding their pattern for proper substitution. If our cat has more energy than the ability to come up with ways to spend it, they might need a little help in the ideas department.

They are almost always Alpha cats, who possess the proper combination of boundless energy, unquenchable curiosity, and unerring instinct for finding things that would be better off without their close attention. But this can also come up with Beta cats who are lonely and in need of more stimulation than their present environment provides. Gamma cats, who can be fascinated by staring at the random movements of dust motes… for hours… rarely make us grab our heads and exclaim, “Will you leave that alone!”

We should provide toys. We should provide enough toys to rotate through them periodically. So they need toys they like, and toys that keep their interest up. Some toys burn out quickly, some need to be left out all the time.

We also need what I call Cat Devices. Scratching posts, cat trees, cubes and condos; every investment in “cat infrastructure” will pay off with both enjoyment for our cats and less wear and tear on our own furniture, devices, and nerves.

Why do we need to go to so much trouble for our high-energy cats? Because they need it.

I always think of Alpha cats as the “original model.” If we look at the African wildcat we see something that looks a lot like our Tristan. These were the ancient ancestors of our current domestic cats.

They must have been busy little gals and guys. Survival was a lot more complicated for them. They had to be constantly on the lookout for the next hot lunch, avoid being a meal themselves, and monitor all the changes in their natural landscape. In our home, with meals on time and not much in the way of changes, they can seem to have too much energy.

Though I love the curiosity, drive, and inventiveness of these kinds of cats. If they need amusement; I give them some.

I’m the same way.

When cats are reflectors

Another of the many advantages of multiple cats is the way each cat can act as a translator for the other cats’ behavior.

While I call such behavior “mirroring” when a cat finds their behavior compatible with another cat’s, it can also be something a cat does involuntarily, which “reflects” clues about another cat.

Recently, RJ was fussing at me; even though he had just eaten a whole bowl of food. RJ is not a subtle boy, but he’s clear. So I followed him to the kitchen and filled the bowl again. When I set it down, he stepped back. It was Tristan who ran in to eat; it was Tristan RJ had been asking for. But because he is still working on his communication skills, he picked up Tristan’s hunger and expressed it as his own.

As this example shows, we don’t even need this capability working at a high level, as when Olwyn got James Bond to translate for her. We simply need to be familiar with how our cats interact; and notice when the patterns change.

There are many circumstances when the other cats can be a valuable indicator about how we interpret ambiguous or even missing clues:

When a cat is sick. Sudden changes in cat interactions can be triggered by one cat’s illness. While cats are very good at pretending when they are not sick or when they are actually feeling pain, they cannot so readily hide their true feelings from the other cats.

Some cats will react with extra solicitude; some cats will react with fear and anxiety. But if one cat is acting strangely, it might be caused by the now quietest cat around; who is hiding something.

When cats have conflicts. Tiffs between cats who have always gotten along can be difficult to unravel. All we can know for sure when a sudden conflict arises is that something must have changed. Cats don’t suddenly develop dislikes among themselves; anytime we think that about our cat conflict, we are missing something that will help us solve this problem.

We have to consider that a cat or cats might be picking up anxiety, but express it by being easily annoyed by things they normally shrug off. It’s time for some detective work: we must remember that the cat causing the trouble… might not be the cat causing the trouble.

When the environment has changed. A lot of times, our cats are creating anxiety between themselves because there’s something going on that they cannot do anything about. We don’t know, because it’s something that happens while we are away at work or otherwise absent at only those times.

This is where having taught the cats Show Me is very valuable. When the cats act up, asking them to Show Me will at least get us to the new humidifier which is making a whine we can’t hear… but they can. Or, as happened one summer day, there’s a jar of olives stuck in the back of the fridge, rattling against the fan. Or they may take us to the window… where we see someone has spent their day working on the street quite noisily; while we are working somewhere else.

Even if we can’t address the issue, or figure out what it is, we can make reassuring noises and wave our arms around at it. Sometimes, that’s all the cats need to feel comfortable enough to ignore that outside commotion.

When people are sick. Mr WayofCats had been battling what he thought was a cold; he’s used to taking longer than average because of his compromised immune system. I insisted we head for the doctor when I saw the way all the cats had taken to hovering around him and piling on when he took naps. That’s when I said, “The cats are saying you are really sick.” It turned out to be pneumonia.

Our cats are sensitive creatures who can’t help picking up the vibrations of all the events around them. Our cats are social creatures who can’t help but react to distress from other living beings.

Knowing this will help us figure out what to do when the cat is upset; even when it’s not really about this particular cat.

Cats getting their cuddle time back

It happens all the time. I settle into someplace comfy, and so do the cats. They are so used to getting snuggle time, in fact, that it has become a factor in my technical needs.

When I got my iPod touch a few years ago, my cats were thrilled at the increased lap access which followed. It wound up becoming my only portable device a year ago, when Tristan killed my laptop. A contributing factor is how he insists on being close to me at all times, as seen in this shot from his first Christmas, showing him wrapped around it.

I’d taken precautions with that glass of wine, putting it on a shelf instead of on the table, and pushing the laptop away when I reached for it. But I hadn’t reckoned on Tristan trying to leap into my lap while I was drinking from the glass; or that his head would send it on a direct trajectory to the keyboard. Though, knowing he was an Alpha, I probably should have. So I didn’t get mad at Tristan.

When I started sitting down at the desktop instead of stretching out on the couch or recliner during “writing time,” the cats’ inquiring faces appeared at my knee. What was I doing here? This chair had no arms to perch on! Why was I leaning forward and blocking my lap? There was no place for them to be!

I already had a folded hand towel on one side of the desktop to park cats on, because I edit video and photos and graphics and websites there. But the cats were not used to me sitting there every day; and then be missing from favorite spots like the recliner, the couch, and the bed.

So for the past year I’ve been urging cats off my keyboard and moving furry behinds off my mouse wires and re-tilting the monitor under which they have tried to wedge themselves. I’ve tried to draft on my iPod touch more, using Shapewriter, while cats happily piled themselves on top of me. Even though editing on the tiny screen was difficult and blog maintenance was tricky, I persevered; because I love the cat closeness time, too.

Now, there is once again joy in Catland.

My original plan had been to get another used laptop at PowerMax.com (ask for my salesperson, Michelle!) But last summer Google released the Chromebook, a new concept in computing devices. It is based on the principle of less is more.

As I read reviews and checked prices, it became clear that I didn’t need a computer to write and blog with. I just needed a screen larger than my palm, and an actual keyboard. Things came full circle; Tristan helped with the taxes, and a chunk of our tax return got me fully mobile again.

The first time I stretched out on the couch with my new Chromebook, RJ parked himself on my chest and trilled his joy. Tristan curled up on my legs, and James Bond found the space between my waist and the couch back, and slid himself into it. There is no doubt in my mind that all of them understood that the appearance of this New Device meant I would be spending more time in cat-accessible places again.

I can confidently say that this was exactly the right equipment choice for me.

And, for the cats.

The Chromebook is a controversial subject in the computing world. It got a mostly hostile reception from tech reviewers, while building a devoted following among many civilians. Find out more at the official Chromebook site.
