Humboldt's Gift by Saul Bellow - A narration of the ups and downs in the literary life of a great Jewish American poet in which the narrator sneaks up on the reader to become the real story. The book won the Pulitzer Price for Fiction in 1976 and partly due to the acclaim of the book, Saul Bellow also won the Nobel Prize for Literature that same year. Shogun by James Clavell - In 1600 English Captain John Blackthorne arrives in feudal Japan. The story has a lick of truth to it from the exploits of British adventurer William Adams. Blackthorne befriends Shogun Toranaga who uses him in his quest for power. Weighing in at 1200 pages this novel flows with intrigue. Ragtime by E. L. Doctorow - Ragtime and The Book of Daniel are perhaps the most well known of his novels. It is a historical slice of New York in the 10 years leading up to World War I.
