For What It's Worth in 1950
The cost of a new house - $8,450
The Fifties were the decade of television, baseball was our national passtime and we saw the begining of Rock & Roll and the space race. Racism under the name of Jim Crow dominated the South while conservative conformity moved us into the suburbs where we all strived to be alike.
The big names in history were Nikita Khrushchev, Dwight Eisenhower, Queen Elizabeth II, and Mao Zedong
The celebrities of the Fifties were Lucille Ball, Milton Bearle, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando, James Dean, Doris Day, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis and Howdy Dowdy .
In music we had Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Pat Boone, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole and Annette Funicello.
Baseball was the only sport to matter with Jackie Robinson, Yogi Berra, Micky Mantle, Hank Aaron, Frank Robinson and Ted Williams,
We enjoyed the fad of the Hula-hoop and the technology of hydrogen bombs, nuclear submarines, satellites, transistor radios and above all, television. |
