Whitey Ford Debut

The Philadelphia Philles took the national league pennant for the first time in 35 years. They had a great year with pitcher Jim Konstanty but New York Yankee manager Casey Stengel brought in a new unknown pitcher in Game three named Whitey Ford. Jackie Robinson who was the first Black to play in major league baseball in 1947 signed the highest contract in Brooklyn Dodger history at $35,000 a year. Also the New York Yankees obtain their 1st black players Elston Howard and Frank Barnes.
