MBFWA: Zimmermann gives us ‘Clique Clique’ for cruise 2012-13

Video by Andrew Kaineder

Fashion week seemed to pass by in a speedy blur that when someone asks us what our favourite shows were, only a few come to mind. One of them for us was Zimmermann. Why? Because they showed one of the most cohesive collections we saw all week, one that stretched the boundaries of creativity while keeping true to their core aesthetic of flirty feminine beauty.

Taking us off-site for their Cruise 2012-13 collection entitled Clique Clique, Zimmermann introduced us to their world of youthful exuberance. Soft silks were covered in vintage floral prints and paint splatters creating unique patterns as they explored a range of textures that took our love for the brand to a new level. Playing with cashmere, lace and laser cut out detail, they were combined to perfection with a parade of adorable playsuits, detailed dresses and luxurious bomber jackets – it was like a moving dream sequence inside Koskela in Sydney’s suburb of Rosebery.

It wouldn’t be a Zimmermann fashion show without the addition of swimwear that included an array of high waisted bikini bottoms, one shouldered one-pieces with twisted detail at the front and chic little cover ups with laser cut out detail.

MBFWA: Ginger and Smart celebrate their ten year anniversary with the ‘NEONATURE’ collection

Image supplied by ghd

Their MBFWA show on Monday was a celebration of their tenth anniversary, so we were expecting big things from Ginger and Smart when they revealed their Spring/Summer /12 collection in the grand ballroom at David Jones. It was a party atmosphere when we walked in to the room and we were eager to see what Alexandra and Genevieve Smart had in store for us.

Titled ‘NEONATURE,’ the collection seemed to mix and match, which could either be confusing, or provide something for everybody, depending on your taste. There was a back-to-the-future vibe here (maybe it was the hair?) complete with neon hues, metallics and digital prints. There was colour-blocking and neutral palettes, sharp tailoring and floaty silhouettes but mixed and matched in a way that made the looks more confusing than beautiful.

According to the show notes it was a collection that celebrated their muse: “an inspiring woman of contrasts”. Which describes our thoughts perfectly. A hit or miss collection, this one missed the mark from our view, while we loved the colour and the amazing hair, we were confused by the multitude of inspirations and clean-then-messy styling. Which is a pity due to the number of stunning collections by Ginger & Smart over the years.

MBFWA: Camilla Spring/Summer 2012-13 goes tribal around the world

We took a whirlwind trip around the world on Monday, and all without even having to leave the Harbour City. Rather, it was the Camilla show at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia that had us traipsing the globe, with inspiration from Australia, Bollywood, Asia and the Tropics evident in the collection, to name only a few. In the jam packed tent, designer Camilla Franks (known for her colourful range of luxe kaftans) revealed her Spring/Summer collection in a flourish of graphic floral prints, paisleys, tropicals and animal print motifs that kept the capacity crowd captivated.

Set to a soundtrack of wild tribal drum beats, it was like the colours of Australia had some alive on the very garments that were parading before us. Boomerang necklaces, feathers, stacked bangles, faux spears, statement earrings and headscarves were just a few of the accessories used to bring the collection to life (even more than it already was!) We moved through earth prints, to tropical prints with an oriental vibe, and then a jungle-esque feel with animal motifs. The makeup, by Napoleon Perdis, varied subtly for each model, with various splashes of colour featured on the eyes, while only the centre of the lips sported noticeable colour.

It was wild, it was crazy, it was Camilla Franks giving her clientèle exactly what they wanted.
