FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Before emailing us with your problem, please look through the following FAQs to see if it’s already been answered or refer to our Status blog, which will keep you up to date on what we’re working on and any problems we’re experiencing on the tech side of TPM.

The FAQs are divided into 3 categories:
1. Load Issues (Questions like: Why can’t I access TPM?)
2. Ad Policy (Questions like: What’s your policy on auto play ads?)
3. Commenting Policy (Questions like: How do I change my avatar?).

LOAD ISSUES
1. A page on TPM won’t load, or is hanging on a file.
2. TPM won’t load for me, is it down?
3. I get a runtime or javascript error on a TPM page.
4. I see the content on a TPM page, but the layout looks weird.
5. How do I subscribe to TPM by RSS?
6. I have another question that wasn’t answered here or need additional assistance with one of the previous questions

1. A page on TPM won’t load, or is hanging on a file.

We’re doing our best to use only fast and responsive ad networks, though sometimes their servers hiccup on an ad. If you can see what file the browser is hanging on, let us know and we’ll pull that ad network out of rotation.

2. TPM won’t load for me, is it down?

If you’re ever worried about whether TPM is down, check out our Status blog, which will be updated if we’re experiencing any problems.

Here’s the link again: http://status.talkingpointsmemo.com/

3. I get a runtime or javascript error on a TPM page.

This is also most likely an issue with our ad networks. Please note the error and what browser you are using, and send it to us.

4. I see the content on a TPM page, but the layout looks weird.

The browser is probably not loading a stylesheet. Hold down shift and reload the page.

5. How do I subscribe to TPM by RSS?

All our RSS feeds are located here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/rssfeeds.php

6. I have another question that wasn’t answered here or need additional assistance with one of the previous questions

1. What is your policy on auto play sound ads?

Auto play sound ads are a violation of our ad policy. If you see one, please take a screenshot or write down as much information as you can about it an send an e-mail to siteissues [at] talkingpointsmemo.com.

2. Do you allow interstitial ads?
No, we believe these ads impede user experience and we will not use them.

1. Does TPM have a comment policy?

Yes! TPM Media follows a simple set of rules for acceptable commenting. 1. All political viewpoints are welcome. However, hate speech of any kind, libelous statements or threats to fellow users or others will be deleted and may be grounds for suspending or terminating a users account. 2. Four letter words are not banned, but we ask that they be used sparingly as overuse coarsens and undermines the debate. 3. TPM is a venue for lively and passionate debate. But insults, personal attacks and the like make that sort of enlivening exchange impossible. If you just want to scream and taunt, please go somewhere else. If you have any question about what is and what’s not acceptable, follow this rule: If you wouldn’t use a certain word or talk to someone a certain way in a real-life political discussion at a Coffee House, don’t do it here either.

2. What commenting system do you work with?

We work with Livefyre.

3. How do I change my avatar?

1. Scroll to the top of the page where you see your name and “Welcome back, XXXX.”
2. Click settings.
3. Where it says “New avatar URL” paste a link to the photo you’d like to use.
4. Click submit.
5. Wait 30 seconds to a minute.
6. Reload/refresh the page.
7. If it does not immediately render after 30 seconds to 1 minute, your browser may have cached your old avatar, and you will need to do a hard refresh by double clicking the refresh symbol.

4. Can I edit my comment after posting it?

Not quite yet. But the folks at LF say that is coming soon.

5. Can I post links in my comment?

Yes, and links containing “http” will automatically be hyperlinked. YouTube videos and specific image hosters will automatically be embedded in the comment.

6. Can I embed HTML in my Livefyre comment?

Not yet, but soon.

7. How do I share my comment on Twitter and Facebook?

Check the Facebook or Twitter boxes next to the “Post Comment” or “Post Comment As” button and allow your Livefyre profile to connect to your Facebook and Twitter accounts.

8. How do I tag my friends from Facebook or Twitter in my comments?
Typing the “@” in the comment box allows you to mention your friends and will bring up a list of your friends and followers from your connected Facebook and Twitter Accounts. As you type more letters in their name, Livefyre will narrow down the list to the specific person you wish to tag.
(Note: Nothing will be shared to social accounts without your explicit permission.)

9. How do I flag an abusive comment?

If you hover over the time-stamp, you’ll see a few options: delete your comment, “flag” other’s comments as offensive, spam, off-topic or disagree and share any comment to Facebook and Twitter or get the permalink to the comment.

10. What does ‘Number of people listening’ over the Livefyre comment box mean?

The number of people listening indicates the total number of users who are following that conversation and the number of people currently live on the page at that exact moment.
