Fiction 1967
Considered his masterpiece, Gabriel García Márquez uses the surreal, magical realism, and the smudging of time and space to fix 100 years of Columbian history to the overall Hispanic experience. The novel was not translated into English until 1970 and was the impetus for his winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1972. It is the best book I ever read.

It is a coming of age story pitting the more affluent but troubled Socs against the less affluent and troubled Greasers. gangs separated by socio-economics rather than territory. It also became, and still is, one of the most censored books in school libraries
Author William Styron used the historical "confession" documents written by Nat Turner's lawyer at the time to fictionalize and add character to the 1831 Virginia slave revolt let by Nat Turner who claimed to be on a mission from God to destroy the White race. Though controversial it won the Pulitzer Prize in 1972,

Historian Robert K. Massie chronicles the lives and deaths of the last Czar and his family. Inspired by the author's son who as also a hemophiliac as were the Romanovs.
.In 1963 historian William Manchester was given a $36,000 advance from Jacqueline Kennedy to write a book on the assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy. The book became a best seller partly due to Mrs Kennedy requiring some political passages be removed and she did not want it serialized by LOOK magazine. Manchester acquiesced saying they were trivial changes. In a new forward for a 1988 reprinting, in reply to questioning whether he would rewrite some of the text in lieu of new developments over the assassination he wrote, "There are no new developments." .
