Megyn Kelly Apologizes for Guest Who Called Tucker Carlson a ‘Bow-tyin’ White Boy’

At the end of her show today, Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly apologized for FNC analyst Jehmu Greene who, during a debate about democratic Massachusetts senate candidate Elizabeth Warren, referred to Tucker Carlson as a a “bow-tyin’ white boy.” Greene and Carlson were going at it over how Warren’s claims of Cherokee ancestry have become a campaign issue. Greene, a democratic strategist, said, “To question this woman on her qualifications is going to be something that does appeal to folks like you, voters like you bow-tyin’ white boys, but at the end of the day….”

“Hey, hey, hey,” Tucker jumped in, “You can use can use name-calling all you like, but you’re ignoring the truth.” Carlson was known for donning bow ties during his CNN days. Not so much anymore. But he is white, and not at all Cherokee.

CNBC Has ‘Dead Air’ Mishap

Look, live TV is hard, and mistakes happen. But having nearly a minute of dead air during what is primetime for cable business news isn’t good, no matter how you slice it.

From HuffPost/former mediabistro intern Ethan Klapper, this is what aired on CNBC at 3PM, during what should have been “Closing Bell”:

Two Additions to ‘Today’ Show Miami Staff

In addition to the changes announced earlier, the “Today” show is also adding staff to its Miami bureau. TVNewser has learned longtime NBC Newser Krista Brunson has been promoted to Senior Producer and will be moving to Miami for the show. Also Rachel DeLima will be joining Brunson as a producer. The additions to the Miami bureau come following the recent departures of a correspondent and producer found to be responsible for the misleading editing of two “Today” show stories related to the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case.

Marc Victor Leaving ‘Today’ Show, Will Oversee New Production Unit

Marc Victor who has been the “Today” show’s lead booker and senior producer of the third hour, is leaving the show after seven years.

Victor will oversee the newly-named TOMORROW productions, which is a division of Peacock Productions. NBC says the unit will focus on the “Today” show’s content and talent, developing new programming for broadcast, cable and syndication. Victor has overseen the development of the “Money 911,” “Steals & Deals” and “The Professionals” segments for the 9am hour.

Insiders tell us there had been outside interest for Victor’s services, including from ABC News. This new development deal keeps him at NBC for some time.

Before joining “Today” in 2005, Victor worked on several talk shows including “Maury,” “Jenny Jones” and “Gordon Elliott.”

Matt Zimmerman will now oversee the booking department at “Today,” while 8am senior producer Debbie Kosofsky will add oversight of the third hour. An insider tells TVNewser the show will be looking to ramp up the booking department in the coming months.

It’s not known if Victor will also be leaving the “Today” summer softball team. If he does, they’ll be losing an ace pitcher.

Juan Williams: ‘It’s Not Fun Being Called a Bigot and a Bad Journalist’

Early morning’s Charlie Rose had another late night last night as the “CBS This Morning” anchor moderated a discussion  sponsored by The Guardian called “Commercial Pressures vs. Journalistic Standards.” FishbowlNY was there:

The panel featured someone who knows first-hand about the pressures of journalistic standards. Juan Williams was dramatically fired by NPR in 2010. Williams, who remains a contributor to Fox News, has had time to reflect on his ugly end to an 11-year tenure.

“It’s not fun being called a bigot and a bad journalist,” Williams tells FishbowlNY. “The degree to which it was about assailing my personal reputation, struck me as Kafkaesque. I didn’t know what to make of it.”

Bloomberg And VICE, Sitting In a Tree…

Are Bloomberg TV and VICE working on a new TV network together? At VICE’s “upfront” presentation last night, that seemed to be the insinuation, according to Ad Age‘s Michael Learmonth.

Vice announced a coming news channel, and told the audience it would be produced in partnership with Bloomberg. Asked for details of this, a Vice spokesman walked it back a bit — this was a boozy affair, after all. It’s not a partnership just yet but talks, which probably explains why Bloomberg Media Networks CEO Andy Lack was briefly in the audience.

VICE already has a large amount of video content, as well as content deals with larger media companies… including CNN.

Sean Hannity Takes on ‘Rock Center’s’ Bin Laden Report Calling it ‘Infomercial from NBC News’

Sean Hannity lead off his show last night with a look at NBC’s “Rock Center” and their hour-long report on the killing of Osama Bin Laden, which included interviews with Pres. Obama, Secy. of State Clinton and other members of the administration.

“I would expect this production to be at the DNC convention the night that Obama speaks,” huffed Hannity, calling the NBC News report an “infomercial” for the Obama campaign.

Fox News analyst Kimberly Guilfoyle agreed: “Why does he need a campaign or a team?” she asked, “He has the mainstream media. He has NBC throwing this all out for him,” said Guilfoyle, whose ex-husband, former San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom is getting is own show on Current TV this month.

As we reported earlier, Hannity wasn’t the only Fox News host going after NBC last night.

Ted Turner: CNN Was To Be ‘The New York Times’ Of TV News, Not ‘The Daily News’

As we noted yesterday, the lead in-studio guest on “Piers Morgan Tonight” last night was CNN founder Ted Turner. Turner, who has criticized CNN in the past for eschewing certain types of news (science, international) for other types (politics), said that he still holds the network in the highest regard:

“I wanted CNN to be the New York Times for the news business, not The Daily News. I wanted it to be The New York Times. And I thought that for the long-term, that would be the best position to be in, even if the ratings weren’t the greatest. If you had the most prestige and you were the network that everybody turned to in times of a crisis, that that was the most important position, in the news business, to hold.”

Turner also told Morgan about the experience of being fired from the company he founded, and losing upwards of $10 million a day:

Bill O’Reilly Finds Something Else He Doesn’t Like About NBC

Bill O’Reilly dissected the Dateline NBC series “My Kid Would Never Do That” on his show last night. The series, reported by the “Today” show’s Natalie Morales, uses undercover cameras to do determine how kids behave in certain situations. O’Reilly, in a culture warrior segment, looked a segment about cheating. “I thought it was unfair. I have to say,” said O’Reilly, a former teacher. “You don’t put children into that kind of a bait and switch situation.” Not surprisingly, his guests, Jeanine Pirro and Gretchen Carlson agreed.

When the series began last month, Morales told TVNewser, “Of all the things I’ve worked on, I’m so passionate about this because I am a parent and a journalist. It’s so important to our country and to raising our kids with healthy attitudes and great confidence.”

See what you think. The next installment of “My Kid Would Never Do That” airs Sunday night at 7pmET/6pmCT with the topic of discrimination.
