The entire 1964 Ford line was named Motor Trend's Car of the Year for "the concept of Total Performance based on high performance testing in open competition." At the World 600 in Charlotte, South Carolina Glenn "Fireball" Roberts lived up to his name dying from critical burns in a crash with Junior Johnson and Ned Jarrett.
The 1963 Grand National champion Nascar winner, Joe Weatherly, was also was killed in a crash at Riverside Speedway.a scene of disaster for Ford.
