When was the last time the United States had a good old-fashioned immigration scare? Was it the roundups of suspicious Arabs in late 2001, or the Japanese internments of 1942? Certainly it was later than the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, or the nativist political parties of the 1850s, stirring up worries that the Irish Menace might turn us all Catholic.
Today, it's immigration to the U.S. from Mexico that has the nation of immigrants up in arms-- often literally, as in the case of the Minutemen, volunteers (or vigilantes, depending on whom you ask) who look for people sneaking across the border. Meanwhile, hundreds of migrants die in the desert each year, trying to cross to a land of higher wages and more opportunities. They may not be citizens, but they're humans, and the debate on what is just and fair isn't a simple one.
Of course, the U.S. isn't the only country with immigration and immigration problems, so keep an eye out for discussion of European responses to immigration from Africa and the Middle East, as well as westward movement from newer E.U. members.
