Lights Out on ‘Today’

Whoops, it seems that someone may have accidentally leaned against a light switch while “Today” was live and Ann Curry was interviewing Jane Pauley in-studio.

What happened? Curry had a theory, and it involved a certain weather anchor:

Dan Rather: ‘You’re more likely to see water run uphill’ Than See Him on ‘Katie’

Former “CBS Evening News” anchor Dan Rather continues to make the rounds promoting his book Rather Outspoken. Friday he appeared on “The Wendy Williams Show” whee he talked politics… and Katie Couric.

Rather said he had “great respect” for Couric, but that “The Powers That Be” at CBS wanted to move away from the version of the “CBS Evening News” that he did, and that he said journalists like Edward R. Murrow did, and toward a new model.

he also said that he would be happy to appear on Couric’s upcoming talk show “Katie,” “But I think you’re more likely to see water run uphill than you are to see that happen,” he quipped.

Rachel Maddow: ‘The less you talk about the election, the more your ratings go up’

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow speaks to B&C‘s Andrea Morabito about TV news in the months leading up to the general election (subscription required):

So if we’re in a fallow period now, when will we start to see people pay attention again?

I think it’s the conventions and Labor Day. And I think the conventions are maybe more important this year than they have been in previous years. In 2008, particularly on the Democratic side, but also a little bit on the Republican side, there was real character-driven drama about who was going to be the nominee, and that made people interested in what was going on. So the conventions were the debut of Sarah Palin and some other stuff, but it was essentially trying to put some drama on something people are already paying attention to. Right now, nobody is paying attention. Cable news ratings are down across the board. The less you talk about the election, the more your ratings go up. The conventions are actually going to have a narrative import this year that they did not certainly have in ’08. That’s kind of exciting, to know that a political event is going to be politically important.

‘Fox & Friends’ AP To Keep His Job

Chris White, the associate producer who assembled a 4-minute long video highly critical of the Obama administration for “Fox & Friends” Wednesday morning, will keep his job at Fox News.

White, who has worked at Fox News for several years, was telling friends and colleagues about a job offer he’d received from CNN, but which was reportedly rescinded after the blow-up over the video.

“Chris White will remain employed with FOX News,” says Bill Shine, Fox News EVP of programming. “We’ve addressed the video with the producers and are not going to discuss the internal workings of our programming any further.”

Wednesday afternoon, following a barrage of criticism that Fox was allowing such politically one-sided material on air, Shine said the video “was not authorized at the senior executive level of the network,” and added the incident “has been addressed with the show’s producers.”

If you missed it the first (or second) time on “Fox & Friends,” here’s the video that started it all:

CNN Turns 32

32 years ago today, cable history was made when CNN flickered to life. What started as a crazy idea in the mind of Ted Turner became a reality on June 1st, 1980 with David Walker and Lois Hart anchoring. The first story? President Jimmy Carter visiting civil rights leader Vernon Jordan in the hospital:

Earlier this year Turner appeared on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight,” and Morgan asked Turner what he wanted to achieve with CNN:

“I wanted to better inform the world,” Turner said.

“Do you feel that you succeeded?” Morgan replied.

“Yes,” Turner responded.
