And There We Go!

NBC is calling Wisconsin for Walker.

No one else so far.

More Results

9:43 PM: A second round of exit polls are showing Gov. Walker opening up a margin over Barrett, now 52% - 48%. 9:47 PM: It’s very early but Barrett’s margin in Dane county is only about 10 points. That’s Madison, where a Dem has to rack up a big, big margin to win. Only 18% reporting. But that’s a warning sign for Dems.

Running Results & More

9:01 PM: Wow, initial exit polls say it’s 50/50 Walker v. Barrett. Looks like a long night … Dig deeper into the internals and it still looks really, really close. It all seems to say dead even.

9:07 PM: RNC chair and former Wisconsin GOP Chair Reince Priebus is on CNN talking about the results. He’s putting on a good show but pretty clearly he doesn’t feel like he knows what the results are going to be. Republicans and frankly most Democrats (at least outside the state) thought Walker was winning. 9:21 PM: Keep it mind: Walker massively outspent Barrett. 9:28 PM: It seems pretty clear tonight’s race in Wisconsin is going to be very right, whoever wins. If Barrett comes up short, expect a lot of second-guessing for the national Dems and particularly Obama’s hands off approach. Whether that’s fair is another matter. But little doubt that will happen. 9:39 PM: Have seen several emails like this from TPM Readers in Wisconsin …

Above all, I’d say that the one thing that stands out for me from today’s election is that folks around here aren’t hysterical or even particularly engaged…at the same time, there is a distinct “get down to business” feeling everywhere. Contrast that with the turn out reports and it doesn’t make sense. But it’s true. People aren’t freaking out, they’re getting things done.

Replays of Glory

As they did in the days just after Gabby Giffords’s shooting, Republicans – specifically Karl Rove’s American Crossroads – try making political hay out of the post-Giffords shooting memorial service.

The People Have Spoken

A new poll shows that 45% of voters say they’re less likely to vote for Mitt Romney because of his tie to Donald Trump. 9% says they’re more likely.

Make a Date

As usual, we’ll be here bringing you live election results tonight from across the country. Of course, the marquee contest is the gubernatorial recall election in Wisconsin. Join us.

And That’s a Good Thing?

This chart – which you should really take a look at – shows that President Obama has overseen the biggest drop of government spending in half a century when you put together government spending at all levels. And that rebuts wild Republican claims that the President has pushed through a massive binge of spending. And yet, is this a good thing? Dramatic drop offs in government spending during a massive contraction is actually a really bad thing – at least if growth or lowering unemployment is one of your goals.

Definitely give this piece a look.

People of Birtherism

Donald Trump says the word ‘birther’ is derogatory and offensive to people in the “place of birth movement.”

We Waz Outspent

Democratic challenger Barrett says Dems were outspent “six to seven to one, maybe as high as ten to one” but still expresses confidence that new voters at the polls will lead him to victory tonight.

All Down to Today

Remember a year ago plus and those massive protests at the state Capitol in Wisconsin? The runaway state legislators? The phony budget numbers and all the rest? It all comes down to today’s Recall election that the once deeply unpopular Gov. Walker is favored to win. Can Dems pull it out with heroic efforts on the ground in the state today? Here’s our report.

Walker Wins Wisconsin Recall

Walker Wins Wisconsin Recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker has won the Wisconsin governor’s recall over Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, holding onto his job after his push to slash collective bargaining rights for public employees sparked intense statewide backlash. Walker’s win caps a chaotic year in Wisconsin, marked by heated demonstrations, endless campaigning and a flood of outside money, all of which vaulted the state from ordinary battleground to Ground Zero of the national political debate – and… Read More →

Bill Clinton Clarifies Remarks Made To CNBC Despite a flurry of Republican emails to the contrary Tuesday night, Bill Clinton insists he is not a surrogate for Mitt Romney. Republicans seized on an interview Clinton gave CNBC Tuesday and which initial reports characterized as a break with President Obama on tax policy and the state of the economy. CNBC teased the interview under the headline, “US Already in ‘Recession,’ Extend Tax Cuts: Bill Clinton”. The New York Times initially reported the interview under the headline… Read More →

Wisconsin Recall On Track For Massive Turnout After more than a year of buildup, turnout in the Wisconsin recall is on track to be huge. Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl told TPM that as of 4 p.m. Central Time, the city was at roughly 50 percent turnout – and that if typical turnout patterns were to pan out, in which turnout doubles after the workday, the city could reach 100 percent turnout. Immigration Protester Hauled Out Of Romney’s Texas Townhall (VIDEO)

Immigration Protester Hauled Out Of Romney's Texas Townhall (VIDEO) Mitt Romney’s pitch to various demographics has been remarkably, painfully consistent: Group X (women, young people, Hispanics) is being adversely affected by President Obama’s economic policies, and should vote for Romney instead. That was Romney’s pitch to to Hispanics Tuesday in Texas. But his case was undercut somewhat when a protester criticizing Romney’s immigration stance – which Hispanic advocates say is at the heart of the population’s discontent with the former… Read More →

Republicans Block Dems’ Equal Pay For Women Bill

Republicans Block Dems' Equal Pay For Women Bill The Senate went back to the future on Tuesday. Republicans unanimously filibustered Democratic-led legislation aimed at closing the pay gap between women and men. The measure would beef up protections for women who sue employers for gender-based wage discrimination or discuss pay with their co-workers – and the GOP blocked it just as it did in late 2010 when the Paycheck Fairness Act last came up. The cloture motion went down 52-47 – short of the 60 votes needed to proceed. “We… Read More →
